i like how much more suttle this version is compared to the origional. This is what it would sound like if the song is on Fables. Fables is a personal favorite but think of how much more awsome it would be if it was on fables. it would have been the greatest album of all time.
Its easy to see why REM is such a huge in band in Europe as well... from the start there was a certain connection between the political aspects of the band's music and the angst felt by many european teens at the hight of the cold war... while we here in the states were worried about parachute pants and vans, they were literally worried about the thousands of nuclear missiles parked within a few hundred miles of their homes pointing in both directions... don't let the sky fall on me indeed.
This is before the lyrics were finished. Note that this was from 1985. "Fall On Me" wasn't released until 1986. Any real R.E.M. fan would know that. Any real R.E.M. fan wouldn't be a hater either.
Well, REMchout, you are definitely the biggest REM fan ever. You have more material than anyone else...and may be a bigger fan than myself...
I posted asking about this version to you a few months ago, and thought that nobody else had it. I heard it in 1993 on a bootleg cd from europe. Of course, you have it...
One of the greatest REM songs ever...and wow, sung in public before the studio version. You gotta love Stipe's mumble...how many bands copied the REM sound and style afterwards! Thanks for the videos.
i always like when bands play unrecorded songs live. even cooler when they song isnt even finished except the chorus. its obvious stipe has the title of songs then writes back from it. good stuff
Sometimes I think I hear the influence of David Sylvian with these guys...but they really had their own thing. I'd like to recommend watching ALL the Tom Waits Rockpalast videos here on youtube. They blew me away.
LOL - clearly he hasn't finished the lyrics, but in typical fashion he just mumbles something that doesn't make any sense :)
Great song though - thanks for posting this rarity

While I certainly prefer the final, this early version is exciting to hear. It sort of captures their creative process.

Wow! Very rare chance to hear the original lyrics of Fall on me! They were changed later and partly used as background vocals for the new version.
