  • The French pair messed up the race plan. They thought the race was a 1500, where it was a 2000 so they started their push half a kilometer before the others, They made up such a distance that they were just uncatchable... Great Finish :)

  • Vive l'aviron français !!!

  • That was so left field. Amazing.

  • how the hell did they do that?! that was simply amazing rowing.

  • they make it look easy. 2k is torture

  • I'm not even upset the British pair lost because the French push is just so amazing.

  • very nice, who could win the upcoming Second basel head (eighth race), most of they are going to wear what has been in the shop navis biremis dot com

  • @jmonlinewizard you mean navisbiremis? yeah it seems to be catching on in the rowing scene, i even saw alan campbell wear one the other day.

  • Insane..

  • all rowers should watch this video...

  • its so freaky how the announcer said "i can sense something is about to happen"

  • French are awsome

  • This video is used by our club rowing coach to inspire the junior crews - one of the gutsiest and most passionate moves in the history of rowing!

  • best race ever!

  • Probably the best race i have watched. That will be part of history forever. You never see something like that in olympics. May be in a local race. Congatulations to the french crew. I am not from France but it does not matter. I wish i could have done the same in a couple of races

  • I saw M. Andrieux in the past and he is (was) a monster.

Proud to be French when I see this video

  • dan says 'jimmy long in the stroke seat" but its james tomkins in stroke and mathew long in bow haha

maybe he's combining their powers and imagining a new super rower.....

  • One of the french racers is my coach :)

  • @pseudodemerdexD you serious? are you any good? :P

  • @eripro yh i am its the man at the bow

  • @pseudodemerdexD ah ? bordelais ? =)

  • @ibanez5607 ah, bah ouais ^^

  • i hate the french but that was a crazy good move

  • We thought it was gonna come and little later... IT CAME A LITTLE EARLIER!!!

  • deh frenchies

  • Wonderful Short Video

  • incredible race. it's funny how the british announcers are trying to make excused for the pair that fell to fourth in the end.

  • whenever my four is down on a crew in the last 700, our coxswain calls "French Pair TIme" and we FUCKING MOVE

  • LOOK AT THE FRENCH

  • LOOK AT THE FRENCH

  • LOOK AT THE FRENCH

  • Lol at the begining i was like "what do these old men think they're gonna do ???"

  • I had a boner

  • WOW i have head of the river tomorrow, this race has gotten me so excited!

  • wow that was freaking crazy!!

  • but i bet they're great great swimmers as well....BANTER

  • I love british commentating

  • I heard an interview afterwards where J.C. Rolland claimed he thought the 1000M mark was actually 500 to go. I find that insane to believe but adds to the epic story of "french pair"

  • this makes me want to go smash a 2km erg

  • Just the commentator saying "i Sense something is about to happen" Made that move so much more epic than it already was. I rewatch this race every few weeks and when i hear that I get a feeling that lightning is about to strike.

  • I really wish rowing was more mainstream so more people could appreciate what happened in this race. As a sport, it is usually so binary that you can almost call the winner before the race has even started. In that way it is similar to many Olympic events, but I wouldn't compare those two Frenchmen to the Bolts and the Phelps of this world. I have no hesitation whatsoever in saying that what they did in those last 750m was a truly superhuman performance.

  • @kbassett yeah i know what you mean. really if anyone were to be called the bolts and phelps of rowing it'd be redgrave and pinsent, though seeing as they've both retired from the sport that's over and done with.

  • gives me goosebumps..their boat speed is insane! they were coming up to the 500m at like a 44 i thought no way they'd be able to hold it for 500m

    that was incredible

  • Try this in race, you won't hold this for 250meter...but they held it for 750meter...RESPECT !

  • 6 people were fans of the Great Britain pair

  • Does this commentator do EVERY SPORT EVENT CAST IN UK!? Whatever video I watch, he's there. 80's? He's there. I even heard him yesterday on Eurosport!!!

  • Just an unbelievable burst from the French. My favourite rowing video. It doesn't look great but the boatspeed is enormous

  • wow

  • The British pair disliked this 6 times.

  • shit, that was the quiquest change of places i've ever seen in a rowing race. that was an amazing strike from the french, i'm still amazed

  • petrol? these motherfuckers running on nitro

  • we have a call during the race now at the 1250, "french pair"

  • British commentator is full of excuses for the British pair haha

  • wow that was amazing how the french pulled it off xD

  • @iSeeJayVee

Go fuck off, Haters can go fuck themselves.

  • @iSeeJayVee how do you figure?

  • watch Barcelona 1992 the Searle Bros winning gold in the coxed pairs.

  • Who's the main commentator in this? He also does commentary for The Boat Race; he's always spot on.

  • Magnifique !!!

  • Amazing, absolutely amazing!

  • french are some ballsy people... respect..

  • trop bien

  • beasttttttttttttttttt

  • i heard they started their sprint early as well, it was in an interview

  • they didnt misread the 750 for the 250. They had it all planned out

  • ...just try it !!!! A sprint of 750meters in an Olympic Final...you will never see that again !!!!

  • It was an accident, the bow man said that he misread the 750 mark as the 250 in an interview after the race.

  • 5:42, that is when they go, absolutely beautiful.

  • this is definately one of my top 3 favorite races

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, they really gave it all they got. Absolutely amazing. I am inspired

  • i think the two french men are favouite in this race

  • This is amazing!

I got a race tomorrow and this is really inspiring.

  • oh, good luck :D

  • that was probably the best race ive ever seen! france almost lost it there at the end, but that sprint at 1000 meters!! bold move, but it worked!

  • the athens M4- final is the best i say.

  • An amazing burst. Just goes to show you that no matter what your position is in a race, you still have a chance to dig deep and blow all the others away.

How they did this was simply crazy!

  • Great race.

    Thanks for uploading.

  • I'm pretty sure that the French pair accidently sprinted at 1000 meters, thinking it was 500. Andrieux admitted to it in an interview after the race.

  • who cares, they won :D

  • thats hilarious, that shows that a lot of rowing is mental toughness

  • :-O wie die franzosen abgehen

  • that has to be one the best rowing races i have watched :)

  • Truc de dingue...

  • Our coach had us watch this this week :)

  • HEY !!!! isnt that one Searle Brothers in great brtian boat in lane 2 is he the one who won in 1992 olympics

  • Yea, it's also mentioned by the commentators.

  • Searle....he was one of the two twin nutters is '92

    and Holy CHRIST!!!!

  • i cry when i watch this.

  • plu belle course au monde, san hésitation !

  • thats insane

  • Still the best race you're ever likely to see. I've watched this so many times as an example of what determination can do you for you.

  • they definitly wanted it and had the balls to just do it! thats the hardest part in a rowing race to just go for it

    allez l'aviron bayonnais^^

  • that was seriously amazing. its amazing what people can do when they want something bad enough.

  • l'enlevage de ouf!

  • jebac usa polska 4+ to jest to

  • those french are on meth, god damn that was the biggest and longest move i have ever seen

  • WOW! :p

  • WOW One of the greatest pairs races ever..along with 1994...they negative splitted, They weren't on petrol, They were on nitro! they should have been in the 2007 All Blacks World Cup team.

  • AW MAN!!! You gotta be kidding me, that's absolutely nuts! Those French dudes have got some balls.

  • "You sense something about to happen...!" These words keep hanging in my head...

  • @ALLDALI

Your dad's ballsack keeps hanging in my head

  • amazing just amazing

  • I heard the french thought to be at the 1750m mark as they even passed the 1250m.

When they noticed that they had still 250m to go they began to die. But they got it!

  • Sometimes the human body does things, or goes beyond that which science can't explain. This is an example of that. Incredible

  • Lol, the stern in the French pair is my cousin (J.C. Rolland). :D No joke.

  • i feel for the british pair, they where the 2nd rank boat, and even the eight had a medal... ed coode was fighting for a spot in the four

  • Cette course est tout simplement ENORME! :)

  • Quel folie purement magique !!!

  • To start a move like that at 800m is absoluely amazing. I can't imagine cranking it up that high from 800m mark to the 300m mark and then seeing the field coming back on you. Easily the most painful and yet most glorious 300 meters of those guy's lives. AWESOME!!!

  • What a push, but what guts to hang on after it! Their legs must have had as much lactic in them as there was water in the lake!

  • Regata assurda! w la francia!

  • I knew both French rowers when I used to live in France. I remember talking to them a few days before the Olympic final. We shared fatherhood experiences and noticed that we were among a minority of Olympic rowers with family in tow at the Olympics. By the way their success was possible because of their extensive aerobic training.

  • LOL, yeah. I wonder why the other teams didn't do extensive aerobic training.

  • i was at a talk by the searle brothers last week and they said that the French shouted the name of their children as they pushed for the finish! did u see the searle brothers in the mens pair at 92 olymipcs! that was a fast finnish!

  • I was there at lake Penrith - it was saddening for Coode and Searle as both are very nice guys - but the best rowing race I have ever seen too. What Psychopaths to do a rate 45 push from 800m out. The pain must have been something crazy. I heard that the bow man for the french pair was shouting the name of the stroke's children at him as he wanted the gold to make his children proud of him. Now that is a big pair of testicles.

  • that was crazy

  • I was watching this live and I couldn't believe what I saw ! I have seen so many races in my life - but never like this in a final !

  • i used to be the champ of egypt and africa in rowing....it took my breath that finish...wonderful and amazing spirit from the french team.....well dons champs

    dr mohamed sawan

  • Just love this video! If anyone is interested in "style," they should look closely at the French who engage their oars after the catch with a little lift with their backs before they start their leg drive. You don't see this style much anymore, but it was definately effective for them. Different strokes for different folks.

The French also did an audacious drive for the line from about 800m out. The field was coming back real fast on them, but the gold medal speaks for itself.

  • Great Race. Top 4 all deserved medals. If you have the 2000 M1x, could you post that too? It was a great race btw Waddell, Muller, Hacker and Porter.

  • it takes a lot of guts to do that!!

    nice work

  • damn, DAMN, DAAAMN!

  • go don and ramon! woo!

  • wow

  • around 5:25 the announcer says "You sense something is about to happen." nice call.

  • damn,that was soooooo amazing...

  • thats insane. france really had quite a showing there.

  • damn...that was crazy:) Very nice finish:) Almost 800m:)

  • CRAZY FRANCE! HOLY CRAP!

  • This is a truly awesome race. I remember seeing the end of this final while I was waiting to get my silver medal. Both men at that time were freshly baked fathers like me. They both had to struggle a little to allow their wives and children to go with them to Australia. All the best to all who enjoy this race.

    XENO

    ironoarsman

  • Weldone on your silver too - your finish at the Atlanta games was up there with the french burst.

  • that's sick.

  • Je suis fier de mes français !

  • that's me in bow for australia

  • only joking

  • Those guys fucking flew through the third 500. That's gotta be one of the most impressive moves I've ever seen at an international level.

  • Amazing

  • Anyone got the GB Mens VIII gold medal row at the 2000 Sydney Olympics???
