The French pair messed up the race plan. They thought the race was a 1500, where it was a 2000 so they started their push half a kilometer before the others, They made up such a distance that they were just uncatchable... Great Finish :)
Probably the best race i have watched. That will be part of history forever. You never see something like that in olympics. May be in a local race. Congatulations to the french crew. I am not from France but it does not matter. I wish i could have done the same in a couple of races
I heard an interview afterwards where J.C. Rolland claimed he thought the 1000M mark was actually 500 to go. I find that insane to believe but adds to the epic story of "french pair"
C'est tout bonnement magnifique de voir cela ! Un enlevage que tous avironnistes rêveraient de faire ! Vive la France et bravo aux anglais qui ont réussi a tenir en tête tout a long de cette course ;)
Just the commentator saying "i Sense something is about to happen" Made that move so much more epic than it already was. I rewatch this race every few weeks and when i hear that I get a feeling that lightning is about to strike.
I really wish rowing was more mainstream so more people could appreciate what happened in this race. As a sport, it is usually so binary that you can almost call the winner before the race has even started. In that way it is similar to many Olympic events, but I wouldn't compare those two Frenchmen to the Bolts and the Phelps of this world. I have no hesitation whatsoever in saying that what they did in those last 750m was a truly superhuman performance.
@kbassett yeah i know what you mean. really if anyone were to be called the bolts and phelps of rowing it'd be redgrave and pinsent, though seeing as they've both retired from the sport that's over and done with.
Does this commentator do EVERY SPORT EVENT CAST IN UK!? Whatever video I watch, he's there. 80's? He's there. I even heard him yesterday on Eurosport!!!
An amazing burst. Just goes to show you that no matter what your position is in a race, you still have a chance to dig deep and blow all the others away.
WOW One of the greatest pairs races ever..along with 1994...they negative splitted, They weren't on petrol, They were on nitro! they should have been in the 2007 All Blacks World Cup team.
Salut tt le monde joli course au francais , juste pr preciser que maintenant michel andrieux entraine a bordeaux dans mon club ! :p Michel est vraiment super simpa a++
To start a move like that at 800m is absoluely amazing. I can't imagine cranking it up that high from 800m mark to the 300m mark and then seeing the field coming back on you. Easily the most painful and yet most glorious 300 meters of those guy's lives. AWESOME!!!
I knew both French rowers when I used to live in France. I remember talking to them a few days before the Olympic final. We shared fatherhood experiences and noticed that we were among a minority of Olympic rowers with family in tow at the Olympics. By the way their success was possible because of their extensive aerobic training.
juste genial!! l'une des plus belles courses d'un bateau francais dans l'histoire de l'aviron francais!! un bon exemple a suivre , mais l'enlevage au 800 dernier metres, faut-etre fous!!!!!
i was at a talk by the searle brothers last week and they said that the French shouted the name of their children as they pushed for the finish! did u see the searle brothers in the mens pair at 92 olymipcs! that was a fast finnish!
I was there at lake Penrith - it was saddening for Coode and Searle as both are very nice guys - but the best rowing race I have ever seen too. What Psychopaths to do a rate 45 push from 800m out. The pain must have been something crazy. I heard that the bow man for the french pair was shouting the name of the stroke's children at him as he wanted the gold to make his children proud of him. Now that is a big pair of testicles.
i used to be the champ of egypt and africa in rowing....it took my breath that finish...wonderful and amazing spirit from the french team.....well dons champs
Just love this video! If anyone is interested in "style," they should look closely at the French who engage their oars after the catch with a little lift with their backs before they start their leg drive. You don't see this style much anymore, but it was definately effective for them. Different strokes for different folks.
The French also did an audacious drive for the line from about 800m out. The field was coming back real fast on them, but the gold medal speaks for itself.
This is a truly awesome race. I remember seeing the end of this final while I was waiting to get my silver medal. Both men at that time were freshly baked fathers like me. They both had to struggle a little to allow their wives and children to go with them to Australia. All the best to all who enjoy this race.
