its a ludwig hand hammered bronze. there the favorite of a lot of jazz drummers because its very dry and very sensitive. its essentially the supra-phonic design.. only bronze... and hand hammered. i love mine.
My friend went to Stanford Jazz camp and said Bill Stewart had this weird grip and was playing on the ride but making it sound like a woodblock. Could somebody elaborate on this?
There's a great video on Zildjians website where he shows how his 'choking', as said by our friend here below, varies, depending on what sound he wants out of his cymbals. I THINK that a very 'choked' gripping on a very dry cymbal does sound somewhat similar to a woodblock, or something else 'not-cymbalish', for that matter!
Go check it up at Zildjians and tell us what you think then........
I saw Bill Stewart a few nights ago with Marc Copeland and Gary Peacock... and lets just say amazing!!! One of the best shows Ive seen. I was in the front row, just a few feet away.... so damn awesome.
Anybody got any guess what hi hats he is using? Supposedly he uses 14" K's, but they don't look like K's to me, they look like they have a much steeper profile. I would really like to see Zildjian come out with a pair of 14" Dry Complex hats!
the bill stewart quartet is very good. I like them alot. I'm a jazz person, grew up with jazz. You guys are the bomb! I love it. Haven't heard anything this exciting since Miles!
that's the most ridiculous thing ever. There are jazz drummers (and jazz everythings) everywhere. But since it isn't a popular music, nobody seems to look for it. We're everywhere man.
haha you're right! Old As and Ks featured always the same models, but today they still sound the best to me, at least in a "music genre" like this... :)
typically when playing with a small jazz ensemble (bass, piano, drums + horn) you tune the drums between the bass and the piano, to allow the drums to play equally in the jazz conversation with the other insturments and allows the ensemble the largest spectrum of notes. Tuning the drums in fourths also covers more range within his designated musical range.
wow very amazing i love bill hes sick...only one thing i hate about this..his toms sound like ass why the fuck would u tune them sooo high?!?! gavin harrison foreerv!!!!
yeah man its hella sweet. I recently got the new 22" ride that he helped create. (the same model as the one he is playing next to his mounting tom)It is by far my favorite ride. Its just everything that i wanted in a ride. I would highly recommend it if your a jazzer!
Now THAT'S stick definition.

Agreed. I've been taught to use french excusivly for jazz ride cymbal technique . Their are so many techniques out their, most of its prefrence.
Anyone diggin that idea at 1:47....Sick
memehame3467 2 years ago
I think he's just switching between German (ride/cymbals), American (rolls) and French (single strokes).
Greez
4StringDomination 2 years ago
I'm 100% sure that he is using french on the ride cymbal, but when he uses the bell he isn't.
His technique is diffrent from most set players

This guy has amazing feel for jazz. Do younger drummers study jazz anymore? Will jazz drumming one day become a lost art?
