r.i.p. Chet...u are still da man..!! If anyone know where the tab is for this...I sure would appreciate it. Not that I could ever come close to playing it half as good...
Chet Atkins was one the most versatile guitarists, and what an impressive arrangement. ! I can imagine some of the so-called ' Guitar Giants ' of modern times tackling that arrangement !!!!
@OEDBrowser I'm sure they could. Chet Atkins is great, no denying that, but talent is in the eye of the beholder, if you can play 30,000 notes a second on guitar and people like it, then you've got talent, if you can make a great guitar arrangement for "Stars and Strips Forever" and people like it, you have talent, why compare people? There is absolutely no point to it, if you like Chet and you don't like Yngwie ( Spelling? ) then don't listen to Yngwie and listen to Chet, stop comparing.
I have a feeling that he did the "this is the end" bit because he was annoyed at the audience's clapping. Why audiences feel compelled to do that, when a master is playing, is beyond me.
How does this video not have over 1 million hits? Ke$a releases a new song and it hits 1 million before i can even puke while listening to it. I mean seriously, not only is chet a legend, but this particular music, patriotic and played with such beauty. Am I living in the U.S.A?
@CrAzzyWak :) Glad to see I can help. I tried to play it this afternoon and it seems very difficult, I wonder if I'm going to keep training on this one...
@CrAzzyWak Yea I'm pretty sure it's in Van Duser's book entitled "Stride Guitar". Good luck tackling that book, man. There's some serious stuff in there
By the way, when Chet put on this live performance, it was during a time when he was extremely sick. Chet played through several sicknesses that would have had a normal mortal person in the grave.
@SylvainBrunerie Hooray for the flag of the free May it wave as our banner forever! The flag of the brave and the free The standard of LIBERTY. MAY DESPOTS REMEMBER THE DAY THAT OUR FATHERS WITH MIGHTY ENDEVOUR PROCLAIMED AS THEY MARCHED TO THE FRAY THAT BY OUR RIGHT THAT BY OUR MIGHT IT STANDS FOREVER! THOSE are the words. Chet, I'm a little disappointed in you. As for the rest of you ... Fill in the blank.
I was lucky enough to be in Chet's office when he was learning this from Guy Van Duser's recording. He said "Let me play you this thing I'm learning" and proceeded to goof up the song part way through. He said "Damn, I knew this this morning!" This was an epiphany for me--geniuses had to practice, too! It changed my life and made me appreciate Chet even more.

I could not believe that he could get the piccolo part on top of the melody. In Sousa's march it goes straight first, and piccolo part the second time, which I think would have been a good way to do here, as it must be insanely difficult to do that.

anytime that I think a certain rock guitar player is really good, I have to go back to Chet, John Williams and Tommy Emmanuel. there's nothing 'wrong' with rock guitar at all.. it's just that THIS is where the real stuff is
I've been searching for years for this clip. I remember watching this (in 1978 i guess), and thinking this is the absolutely, outstanding, best guitar performance, by anyone, ever! And this was around the birth of the guitar hero age of Ted Nugent and many other hard rock guitarists of the time. And he did it on 6 nylon strings with 8 fingers.
Country (and Western too!) brought us many of the greatest pickers ever. Never flashy, just gettin' the job done.
For everybody who loved ( and still loves Chet) , he has a musical son. Tommie Emanuel does what chet did. Making a whole lot of people happy by playing guitar and beeing a very good person.
When Chet plays the piccolo solo AND the counter melody (1:48), I have to wonder how/why any human was ever given as much talent as Chet Atkins. Music needs a Chet Atkins so badly right now.
Dear Lord-please bring Chet Atkins back. You can have Taylor Swift in return.
When Chet plays the piccolo solo AND the counter melody at the same freaking time (1:48), that's other worldly. Sousa smiled down from above when he heard this. Chet could stand toe to toe with any clasically trained guitar player then or now. Music needs a Chet Atkins right now.

Truth is, the music industry is trying to kill the guitar, and talent for that matter; they want auto tune and fake beats. One might say, they are an enemy to music.
I agree with you. They have been doing it for a long time by pushing their fasion based garbage down peoples throats. You can't rely on the mainstream to find great music, you have to go out and look for it yourself.
@rebelwithoutapause25 The ease with which he plays the contrapuntal parts of this section---flawlessy, as usual---knocked my jaw slack. I now realize that I can make better use of my time than making the noise that I do on guitar; the instrument has already been mastered !!! Tommy Emmanuel has the same effect on me :-) Perhaps i'll take up the kazoo..........:P Peace:-)

In the intro (I'm not looking through all the comments) Chet said that Guy Van Duser, who arranged and plays this all the way through, was this kid who listened to all of Chet's records and played along with them -- and nobody told him that they were multi-tracked.
1 John, 5:19: "We know that we are from God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the wicked one." we could use a blessing or two if such is the case...I agree here. We all need God's help at this point, not just America...

In the intro (I'm not looking through all the comments) Chet said that Guy Van Duser, who arranged and plays this all the way through, was this kid who listened to all of Chet's records and played along with them -- and nobody told him that they were multi-tracked.
Electrifying performance.

1 John, 5:19: "We know that we are from God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the wicked one." we could use a blessing or two if such is the case...I agree here. We all need God's help at this point, not just America...
