  • r.i.p. Chet...u are still da man..!! If anyone know where the tab is for this...I sure would appreciate it. Not that I could ever come close to playing it half as good...

  • Chet Atkins was one the most versatile guitarists, and what an impressive arrangement. ! I can imagine some of the so-called ' Guitar Giants ' of modern times tackling that arrangement !!!!

  • @OEDBrowser I'm sure they could. Chet Atkins is great, no denying that, but talent is in the eye of the beholder, if you can play 30,000 notes a second on guitar and people like it, then you've got talent, if you can make a great guitar arrangement for "Stars and Strips Forever" and people like it, you have talent, why compare people? There is absolutely no point to it, if you like Chet and you don't like Yngwie ( Spelling? ) then don't listen to Yngwie and listen to Chet, stop comparing.

  • first time this nigger was proud in its country

  • I have a feeling that he did the "this is the end" bit because he was annoyed at the audience's clapping. Why audiences feel compelled to do that, when a master is playing, is beyond me.

  • @bus114 That is ridiculous.

  • Power Chords

  • That is amazing. I bookmarked it. I wonder if he wrote out his arrangements or if he figured it out in his head.

  • 14 people didn't notice that it was the end

  • holy shit.

  • This is superhuman.

  • How does this video not have over 1 million hits? Ke$a releases a new song and it hits 1 million before i can even puke while listening to it. I mean seriously, not only is chet a legend, but this particular music, patriotic and played with such beauty. Am I living in the U.S.A?

  • He's the King...

  • He looks extremely ill.

  • Come on! Chet, why are you dead? Damn it!!!

  • Be kind to our webbed footed friends,

    A duck maybe somebody's mother....

  • Outstanding!

  • WHAT A MONSTER OF A PLAYER

  • TAB. NOW.

  • @CrAzzyWak It is in "Chet Atkins in three dimensions, Volume 1", by John McClellan and Deyan Bratic, Mel Bay Publications. Good luck!

  • @SylvainBrunerie I cannot thank you enough. I love you man.

  • @CrAzzyWak :) Glad to see I can help. I tried to play it this afternoon and it seems very difficult, I wonder if I'm going to keep training on this one...

  • @CrAzzyWak Track down guy van duser everyone that plays this song plays his arrangement of it. He personally taught it to Chet.

  • @CrAzzyWak Yea I'm pretty sure it's in Van Duser's book entitled "Stride Guitar". Good luck tackling that book, man. There's some serious stuff in there

  • :'( chet.

    i love you

  • How the hell do you transcribe that and once you do how do you remember all that? Amazing.

  • OMG - it just doesn't get any better than Chet. Mr Atkins - we miss ya buddy!

  • Just amazing everytime I see Chet play this amazing arrangement by Guy Van Duser...Jack Baker NYC

  • This may sound like a tin foil hat wearing conspiricy theory, but i'd say based on the shirt, this video is from the 70,s.

  • great man - great guitarist

  • My biggest hero - as a guitarist and as a human being. RIP Chet

  • He covered that piccolo part perfectly - What a guitarist! I like the clapping, too!

  • HOW...DOES...HE...DO...THAT.

  • By the way, when Chet put on this live performance, it was during a time when he was extremely sick. Chet played through several sicknesses that would have had a normal mortal person in the grave.

  • I'm not worthy to even be able to listen to such a stunning performance!

  • chet atkins makes me proud to be an american.

  • George W. Bush is a badass on the geetar! =P

  • @kabeejay Hes the most unpatriotic flag waver in history-should be in jail as he has violated the war powers act

  • CHET ATKINS FOREVER! WHAT A GORGEOUS PLAYER!!!

  • WOW

  • I am a finger picker but when it comes to playing two tunes at once like this one i give up he was great.

  • "You may think that this is the end…

    Well, it is!"

    :)

  • @SylvainBrunerie Hooray for the flag of the free May it wave as our banner forever! The flag of the brave and the free The standard of LIBERTY. MAY DESPOTS REMEMBER THE DAY THAT OUR FATHERS WITH MIGHTY ENDEVOUR PROCLAIMED AS THEY MARCHED TO THE FRAY THAT BY OUR RIGHT THAT BY OUR MIGHT IT STANDS FOREVER! THOSE are the words. Chet, I'm a little disappointed in you. As for the rest of you ... Fill in the blank.
  • wooooow, where can i find a tab for this song?

  • @garfinorbit tab in "Chet Atkins in Three Dimensions vol 1" pricey but both volumes worth it

  • @joshuabolt i found it free at google :) wow what a piece. really nice arrangement and so damn HARD

  • @garfinorbit A book called "Stride Guitar" by Guy Van Duser, published by Mel Bay. Could be tough to find.

  • I was lucky enough to be in Chet's office when he was learning this from Guy Van Duser's recording. He said "Let me play you this thing I'm learning" and proceeded to goof up the song part way through. He said "Damn, I knew this this morning!" This was an epiphany for me--geniuses had to practice, too! It changed my life and made me appreciate Chet even more.

  • I was lucky enough to be in Chet's office at RCA when he was learning this from Guy Van Duser....he said "Let me play you this song I'm learning..." and proceeded to play it---blowing it part way through. He said "Damn, I knew this this morning!" And I had the epiphany--even geniuses had to practice! It was a revelation to me, the first inkling that everybody had feet of clay...and it made me a better and more sympathetic person. Like Chet had been all along!

  • @basenjibigmama Very cool story, thank you for sharing. It is very inspiring to hear that someone with Chet's talent still have has to practice and put in the hard work.

  • I could not believe that he could get the piccolo part on top of the melody. In Sousa's march it goes straight first, and piccolo part the second time, which I think would have been a good way to do here, as it must be insanely difficult to do that.

  • forget the war just listen and enjoy, thank you for posting

  • the way he finishes the song is great..

  • wow inperssive thats a really hard song

to play on guitar that was awesome!!!

  • cëst vraiment trop trop bon

  • Have always wondered why Chet switched to classical. The necks are wider and fingerboard radius flat. But in my book, Mr. Atkins can do no wrong.

  • I miss the trillos, but this is INSANE!! It must be extremely hard to play this on guitar!

  • Superbly performed by a master guitarist.

  • I have been listening to every youtube Patriotic American cut I can find tonight. Obviously I am NOT ALONE!!!!!! Thanks to all who have founf the dozens of cuts I have listened to and saved... Patriotism is NOT lost, so, let's

HONOR OUR TROOPS AND WIN A WAR!!!

  • @ptbrehmer60 Win what war exactly? The war that the Yanks started, perhaps?

  • @PanchoAndDrum

Yeah just be thankful we didn't start one with England you twat.

  • I have a "tape", yes tape, of Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler picking together! Simply amazing!

  • anytime that I think a certain rock guitar player is really good, I have to go back to Chet, John Williams and Tommy Emmanuel. there's nothing 'wrong' with rock guitar at all.. it's just that THIS is where the real stuff is

  • I was listening to the Guy Van Duser version which is the same as this back in the late 70's. I think Chet got this from Guy.

  • Wes Montgomery and Chet Atkins must surely be regarded as among the greatest of all guitarists.

  • excellent! Chet is a proud american!!

  • I've been searching for years for this clip. I remember watching this (in 1978 i guess), and thinking this is the absolutely, outstanding, best guitar performance, by anyone, ever! And this was around the birth of the guitar hero age of Ted Nugent and many other hard rock guitarists of the time. And he did it on 6 nylon strings with 8 fingers.

Country (and Western too!) brought us many of the greatest pickers ever. Never flashy, just gettin' the job done.

  • awesome

  • and he makes it looks sooooo easy

  • An American treasure doing an American iconic tune!

  • For everybody who loved ( and still loves Chet) , he has a musical son. Tommie Emanuel does what chet did. Making a whole lot of people happy by playing guitar and beeing a very good person.

  • go commies!

  • @ipoodaily shut the fak up

  • When Chet plays the piccolo solo AND the counter melody (1:48), I have to wonder how/why any human was ever given as much talent as Chet Atkins. Music needs a Chet Atkins so badly right now.

Dear Lord-please bring Chet Atkins back. You can have Taylor Swift in return.

  • @JethroSandwich Holy Hell! I thought the counter melody was played by the other guitarist! Never underestimate Chet.

  • 14 Terrorist dislike this video.

  • Truth is, the music industry is trying to kill the guitar, and talent for that matter; they want auto tune and fake beats. One might say, they are an enemy to music.

  • @Mike1Frett1

I agree with you. They have been doing it for a long time by pushing their fasion based garbage down peoples throats. You can't rely on the mainstream to find great music, you have to go out and look for it yourself.

  • What's that thing his wearing on his thumb?

  • @Stalinsurfstheweb

    thumbpick

  • @Stalinsurfstheweb It's a thumb pick. They're common among performers who do fingerpicking and flatpicking.

  • I have seen a million "Arranged for". This is the best of the bunch. It's like it was written for guitar.

  • this would have benefited from some glowsticks

  • @1:50, I had an epiphany: I have several guitars for sale, all in excellent condition. I won't be needing them anymore. Peace:-)

  • @binnyman why dont you need your guitars anymore?

  • @rebelwithoutapause25 The ease with which he plays the contrapuntal parts of this section---flawlessy, as usual---knocked my jaw slack. I now realize that I can make better use of my time than making the noise that I do on guitar; the instrument has already been mastered !!! Tommy Emmanuel has the same effect on me :-) Perhaps i'll take up the kazoo..........:P Peace:-)

  • besides randy rhoads chet atins is and was the best in the world

  • watch?v=PuCAsEi9Y90

  • fantastic, such clean and uncluttered playing

  • how can you not like this?

  • george bush

  • Who needs a Sousa band?

  • please see my version of freight train.

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Chet on several occasions when he was the guest artist with our orchestra. He was a great player and a wonderful person to be around. He could play any style of music. He did a little country, a little jazz and a bit of classical guitar. He could really work a crowd and put on a great show.

  • wonderful..thanks for sharing

  • No words for it.<33333333.

  • This is just jaw-droppingly good. How do you make this look easy?

The man was born with a guitar in his hands.

  • @harveyjohnny1967 The scary part is that he made _everything_ look that easy.

  • I'm also here to listen to this on the fourth! Nothing like the glorious sound of fireworks, mortars, and Stars and Stripes Forever by the greatest guitar player to ever play, Chet Atkins. God Bless America, happy independence day! =D

  • I came here to specifically listen Chet play this today! July 4th! I'm a guitar player although I'm not up to par with Chet Atkins, it will take me a long to reach his level being able to play guitar like him!

  • Unfreakin real!

  • Happy 4th !!!!! This is just beautiful!

  • More than anything, reminds me of Fallout 3 >_>

Probably cos I'm not a yank

  • awsome

  • i think this song family :O

  • Real American hero!

  • Amazing

  • wow

  • i miss his music, thank god ! he recorded it...love ya chet !

  • Sure miss you Chet.

  • @Perky010136 Ditto there will never be another quite like Chet two tunes at once fantastic

  • The Maestro -- and what a shirt!

The ritard before the final "trio" section is immortal. Sousa would be proud.

  • 1978 was a great year!!!

  • this sounds like it could be the new theme for spongebob (y) not ment to be negative :) it just sounds spongebob-ish

  • @Zestava that's what i was just thinking xD

  • This technique is great

  • Chet, mark knopfler and tommy emmanuel have a special relationship and talent for their styles in guitar. They gave worked together in different projects. Everyone should look up their collaborations.

  • @slickstrings And of course Jerry Reed!

  • @slickstrings hey ive looked for tommy and mark working together but can never find anything, did u mean just tommy and mark have worked with chet at different times? cause if tom and mark have picked together thats something id really love to see

  • @MrChetwannabe hey buddy. To my knowledge tommy and mark havnt performed together. I meant chet and mark and chet and tommy. Would be something to see though wouldnt it.

  • A few years back heard someone do this at a slightly faster tempo. Se refered to it as "starts & stops forever"

  • Chet is fantastic, but yes, this is Guy Van Duser's arrangement. Doug Smith also does a great version.

  • Is there something that Chet stumbled at on the guitar?, if so, I never heard it yet. The man was incredible in his feel and understanding of guitar music to say the least.

  • What a reach this man has!

  • This guy is such a boss!

  • Loved everything about it! Am old enough to catch the Mitch Miller reference at the end.

What a pleasure to watch and hear someone actually play a guitar, instead of whale away at a few chords! I like music, what else can I say?

  • What an arrangement! Marvellous

  • What a good guitarrist... R.I.P Chet :(

  • He was one of the best, and he fought cancer for 25 of his most productive years.

  • Excelente guitarrista, un manejo increible de la guitarra! Hermoso video! Saludos.

  • country music used to be so awesome. wtf is taylor swift???

  • Great job, but he learned this from Guy van Duser, who should get some credit.

  • If you see the full version of this, Chet explains fully that he learned it by Van Duser

  • Unbelievable...Jack Baker NYC

  • such articulation with ease....amazing

  • no lo puedo creer!!!!!!!!!este tipo es un verdadero grosssssoooooooo, gracias por compartir esto, hermosa versión.

  • horowitz plays this with more power

then again it is on a piano but yea chet atkins is great

  • he's so cool, makes it looks so easy to play but you know it's not that really easy. need years of practice before it can be played like that. you bet?

  • it's neat to hear the piccolo section on guitar, very well done indeed

  • hermosa marcha muy emotiva

  • He does sort of look like George Bush. Actually George Sr. is quite a good player himself. Chet is the definition of class. I aspire to be as good a person as he was because I will never be as good a musician.

  • Fantastic! You look like George Bush!

  • I agree with you!

  • I enjoyed watching this when it was broadcast back in about 1980. I wish someone would post the entire concert.

  • Chet makes me proud to be an American

  • @naturalthing1 two tunes at once fantastic you lost a genius when chet passed away so you should be proud

  • @naturalthing1 Well I guess something has to...

  • @DochSchneider hehe, you're just jealous that he's not yours

  • @naturalthing1 I was already proud to be American, Chet just makes it a little nicer.

  • I just wanna know where Chet got his shirts !

  • a great version!! excellent!

  • Chet Atkins is God!

  • this is awesome!

  • This is an amazing version of Guy Van Deuser's arrangement...

  • joooodeeer!!!

  • He is the star of America and

    Highest,

  • In the intro (I'm not looking through all the comments) Chet said that Guy Van Duser, who arranged and plays this all the way through, was this kid who listened to all of Chet's records and played along with them -- and nobody told him that they were multi-tracked.

    Electrifying performance.

  • Incredibile performance!

  • GOD BLESS THE WORLD

  • 1 John, 5:19: "We know that we are from God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the wicked one." we could use a blessing or two if such is the case...I agree here. We all need God's help at this point, not just America...

  • @

    StickyDirtwood

chet is the greatest guitar player of all time.

  • this is great :-D

  • What an amazing man he was.

  • WOW, THATS AMAZING!

  • God BLESS America!

  • YES, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

  • Mr. Chet Atkins awesome!!!!

  • 運動会の音楽だ!Chet Atkinsのギターならもっと楽しかったのに〜

  • Chet!

  • I love Chet Atkins. He is a wonderful guitar player.
