Katyusha is something I would call a 3rd degree of diminutive the name Yekaterina. In English there are only 2 "degrees" Catherine -> Cathy, in Russian it's Yekaterina -> Katya -> Katyusha.
The song is about a girl named Katyusha missing her beloved fighting at war. It was written before war, while first missile launchers commonly named "Katyusha" (BM8, BM13 and BM32) was introduced in 1941
