great! however for playing in a breton style scale you must make some cross fingering to reproduce the C natural and the F natural if 'm not in wrong, and with the smallpipes you can do it, but with the greath highland pipes you must have a very good reed and Chanter.
On Smallpipes you can not cross finger notes. I'm playing from "B" in this piece - starting on the 2nd note of the standard scottish bagpipe scale (Myxolydian Mode) gives you a minor scale (Aeolian Mode). I've also moved the Bass drone up to "B" to better support the scale. You are hearing me play an octave note now and again because I have a high "b" key. On the highland pipes you CAN cross finger a minor third, minor sixth, and a major 7th. (but yes, you do need the right reed)
The whole thing is an improvisation. The first half is styled after music from Brittany and the faster part is somewhat like a Rond. The last half is of a more western (pop music) style.
Terrific Sound! Where could I find some Breton tunes that sound hypnotic like that??? I have a set of Gibson Ceilidh pipes on the way and I'd love to play something like that!
I don't compete very much, but I think the term you are looking for is "open". I play pipes for a living so there isn't much time left over for visiting the competion cicuit.
Nice ornamentation on that tune. I like hearing Breton music on pipes that don't threaten to deafen anyone within 10 feet. Who made your smallpipes? They have a pleasantly dry, reedy sound.
Thanks for the compliments! Nigel Richard is the pipe maker however the reed I am playing was made by EJ Jones. I usually make my own reeds but EJ happened to have one handy when I needed it and I've been using the reed ever since (about 3 years ago).
I look forward to that...finding the time to do it is tough. May I ask what pipes (maker) you're playing. I sold some MacMurchies a while back and recently picked up some Wash Shuttlepipes--but I think I'd like to go back to bellows. I love Moore's A/D combos, but the price hurts. Any recommendations on suitable seconds to H.Moore's? thx.
Can you tell me what key your smallpipes are?

That sounded amazing. I have been thinking about a set of Nigel's smallpipes. What key are you playing if you don't mind me asking?

It's great to see someone scrunch down the drones and play in a minor key! I wish folks did that more often; it really adds to the haunting effect.
