"i took out my dog, and him i did shoot" elevates Jock Stewart, and its a very fitting line. I couldn't imagine how much balls it would take to shoot my best friend. The fact that he did means he had a damn good reason to sacrifice his best friend, not for Jock's benefit, but for the dog's. Brilliant line, fills me with sorrow and respect everytime I hear it.

The verse about the dog SUCKS ASS!! I will NEVER sing it this way- and the Pogues suck for that...no respect for them...wankers all.

The verse about shooting the dog is pretty much just the Irish version.
It's the Scottish version where he just takes it out hunting.
