This once Tory citadel finally fell to Labour in 1979 when it was gained by John Maxton and in a cruel irony he defeated Teddy Taylor who would probably have been Secretary of State for Scotland in Maggie Thatcher's first government. Teddy Taylor later went south of the border to find a safe haven in Southend. Cathcart has never been Tory since, indeed there hasn't been a Tory seat in Glasgow since 1982.

They're wrong about one thing.

No election has ever depended on the youth vote. Any candidate who has ever counted on the youth vote has lost.

This was the first time 18 year olds had been allowed the vote, something which we take for granted these days. I didn't have my first vote until 1989 in the European Elections, having not being registered in 1987, due to my family moving house and not re-registering.
