First, comparing Kadri to Hedman is jokes. Forward to Defense. 7th overall vs 2nd overall. He simply hasn't had the chance to play on a consistent basis. To answer your ice-time question, Defensemen ON AVERAGE get MUCH more ice time than Forwards do. If Kadri was put on the Lightning with Stamkos, St. Louis, Vinny, etc that he would be playing? haha the answer is obviously NO!
Hedman was able to consistently play for Tampa because he is a 2nd overall DEFENSEMAN on one of the most offensive teams in the league (they needed him). Without as many offensive guns, the obvious choice is to pick players based on the team's needs.
And just because Kadri has scored multiple nice shootout goals on last years Vezina Winner, it doesn't make him a great player, you're right. It also doesn't make him a worse player by that same logic...

Teams need to adjust their strategy to harness the offensive potential that now exists. Hedman was able to consistently play for Tampa because he is a 2nd overall DEFENSEMAN on one of the most offensive teams in the league (they needed him). Without as many offensive guns, the obvious choice is to pick players based on the team's needs.
And just because Kadri has scored multiple nice shootout goals on last years Vezina Winner, it doesn't make him a great player, you're right. It also doesn't make him a worse player by that same logic...

they need to get rid of the coach. his old defensive style strategy worked well during the 80's and 90's but with the removal of the red line the game has changed. Teams need to adjust their strategy to harness the offensive potential that now exists. I hate the lets "sit back and wait until the other team makes a mistake" defensive approach that Torontos coach demands. Fire him and get someone in there who knows how to develope a offensive strategy for todays faster, more wide open game.

I've been following the Habs since the late 70s and Subban is the best defensive prospect I've ever seen (including Chelios, Schnieder, Desjardins, Svboda). He'll only get better. Desharnais led the Ahl in scoring for 2 years and is already a major factor for Habs.
