Great song. Has a native-American vibe to it. To Megadockxw71...Tupac and Layne were BOTH awesome. They were poets of two different struggles. Tupac spoke of injustice and inequality, and simply how just BEING a black man in America is screamingly difficult, and dangerous to your health. The outward struggle of trying to make your way in a country that tends to make it hard simply for being a few shades darker than those in power. As a black man, I can't help BUT relate.
@AeonPhoenixZero Layne, on the other hand, AIC spoke of the pain and struggle in one's self, and the fight to keep your sanity and soul. That inner turmoil that ANYONE of ANY race can relate to. The one where it feels like the world keeps trying to shove down your throat that everything is fine, BUT YOU KNOW DAMN WELL THAT IT AIN'T!! Bands like AIC at the least, by their music would tell you "It's OK brother. You ain't crazy. Just keep fighting, brother.
@AeonPhoenixZero And by that, I have nothing BUT love and respect for those two. Being able to express REAL emotion, not that emo-hipster crap, but real pain, joy, sorrow, and love...Powerful, profound music can come as easily from the scratch of a vinyl album as it can from the strum of a guitar. Don't be so quick to dismiss one or the other. That's all I'm saying. Thanks for listening.
Man, great album. 20 years old the first time I heard Alice. 40 now. Yes, Layne is missed but this album is still AIC, very moody and complex. People say Nirvana launched the grunge movement, I have to disagree. Nothing hooked me like these guys. Own all their albums, Love every song on every album, period. Alice in Chains are to the music industry what Edgar Allen Poe is to poetry. Good job Jerry, keep them comming.
I almost pissed myself laughing at these comments... Only on YouTube can you find a 2 year-old debate of Layne Staley vs. Tupac. It's like going to a Super Walmart or equivalent, buying a headlight and an orange, setting them side by side on the kitchen table, and discussing how one is better/more important than the other. For 2 years. I love this site.
William DuVall will never replace Layne Staley but I agree with Scummy516 when he says that they couldn't have picked someone better to revitalize AiC. I look forward to listening to more material by AiC. Can't believe they still sound as close to their original lineup as they do.
Definitely the best and most beautiful song on the album. It touches the deepest part of soul. How anyone can't love it? And this solo + melody during refrain <3
You guys here Jerry Cantrell thats why it sounds like the old AIC. He sang alot in the Layne days as well. William Duvall if you listen to just him without Jerry actually is nothing close to Layne.... not even close! Jerry Cantrell is the voice of AIC old and new... RIP Layne Staley!!!!
As a huge AIC fan I admit that I at first resisted the new music. But noone else is Layne Staley and should not be compared to him. This album just shows how much creativity Jerry Cantrell has yet to offer and thank God he found a way to share it with us.
I think where everybody thinks they Layne, hears Jerry twice. I don't think William is in this song. But then again at the concert he did sound an awful lot like Layne, so you never 'till you ask Jerry. Give him a call sometime and ask him.
i think william duvall was the perfect addition to revitalize aic. they couldnt have picked someone better. this album is amazing. hes not layne, but is still great.
Well that's your opinion... I think they where both great at what they did... If you can't realize that 2pac was a awesome artist though you dont like his music then you are narrow minded...
@ArnthorJon I could tolerate 'Pac. He was a mediocre rapper, but by all means was not a song writer. I wouldn't give him the same kind of respect as I would give to Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Mike McCready, Andrew Wood, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, my buddy Mike, myself, Kris Kristofferson, I think you get the point. I WOULD give Tupac more respect than Randy Newman though.
dude he compared them with them being both dead and coming back to life shut the fuck up dont jump on someone like that when he wasnt even saying anything about comparing their talent lvls. asshole
@Megadockxw71 First of all they are different genres of music so dont compare tupac to layne cuz tupac is on another level too. They were both great. This is why music falls off cuz yall always arguing over who is better. And this is really irrelevant for yall because they are different genres of music. just post comment about enjoyin the song.
@pdwyer283 you obviously don't know the difference between layne and jerry's vocals.. thats clearly jerry doing 2 diff vocal parts to make it sound more like the old stuff...

Wow... is there a 'bad' song on this disc???
Man... there's representation of every 'phase' of AICs music, from Facelift to Jar Of Flies.
Truly amazing. So much beautiful music on this disc... that would mean so much to Layne.
Rest easy, Layne Staley. You're missed... and your music lives on, eternally.
