My guess is that those boats had a condenser which would allow for a closed cycle: the steam would be condensed to water and pumped back into the boiler. Does anybody have better info on this subject?
I think its like the same type used by the steam engine train? they used charcoal and stuffs and they dont used water.. but i think some parts where used just make sure the engine dont over heat!
There were devices which used the boiler's steam to distill sea water on board. Water which came from the condenser was mixed with oil and gunk which came from the engine. And yes, fresh water tanks were used as a main source.
I don't know, do you think it would, after all the water would be boiling so the salt was probably not much of a problem, however I guess you are right as it probably damaged certain valves, I don't know better ask and expert.

@LuisCSAmaral I believe they (ocean steamers) ran triple-expansion engines, so they'd almost certainly use a condenser.

@LuisCSAmaral All ocean steamers did indeed have a condenser. However, some water is always lost, and therefore these ships had large tanks of water.

All you need is some water level sensors and you can check how long untiil you have to "pull in" before you run out of steam.

It was custom built and I was not the maker. The person behind is the man with the yellow hat holding the remote control.
The problem is not the money but the time and the skill...
