OMG you have no idea how much help your videos are to prepare for my organic chem labs. Holy shit thank you so much YOU ARE SO AWESOME. <33333333333333333333333333 meow!
Im going to tell yall a trick to determine which layer is which. if you poured your solution in the seprating flask, extracted using ether, got two layer but not sure which is which. pour off the bottom layer in a Er flask and add a portion of ether to it. if you notice two layers then you know that is the aq layer because ether and water dont mix. if you pour in the Er flask and dont notice two layers but just a volume increase then you know that layer is ether.
Shouldnt you basify the solution first? before adding the ethylacetate? It makes the alkaloids separate easier...or is that not necessary for all alkaloids?
I'm sorry but can someone explain what exactly happened here?
Did he just mix the two solutions together and then make them back into what they were before or was the dark solution just caffein at the end or what??
At the start, the dark solution (aqueous layer) contained the caffeine with all the unwanted material. At the end the separation, the caffeine had been extracted from the dark solution (aqueous layer), into the clear solution (organic layer). Therefore making the caffeine alot easier to extract straight from the organic layer without all the rubbish in it from the aqueous later (dark solution)
This is really a nice demonstration and information. However you notice a bad habit of the experimentator, he always touches his glasses which is quite a bad habit, since this might bring dangerous chemicals from his gloves to his face.
Chemistry was my hobby since I was eight years old. This was 46 years ago. I learned photography and in those days you had to have a developer, stop, and fixer. This involved chemistry. Also, I became interested in pyrotechnics. If you are going to be involved in constructing fireworks, you MUST know something about chemistry. After all, it only takes two molecules to start a spontaneous combustion. Follow this tutor's lead: ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES! Read and understand your MSDS too.
If you get confused or forget which is the aqueous layer and which is the organic layer, take a small drop of water and drop it into the sep. funnel. If the organic layer is on top, the drop of water will zip right on through down to the aqueous layer.
no problem. i have a few other tips but that is one of the most useful tips i have when doing extractions, i use it all the time cuz always forget which layer is which- good luck in your studies!
you are very paranoid. Meth cookers will find their ways even without this video. Dont be an ignoramous. Druggies have their ways... even in the 60's, when internet didnt exist, they found ways to create hallucinogens... so dont blame it on this video... blame it on people that are addicted.
Believe me, we did try a lab coat, but the studio lights were so intense that our instructor shone like a fluorescent bulb, ruining the whole frame. We tried *three* different shirts until we decided to go with this very unprofessional-looking shirt, which worked the best with the lights.
petroleum ether(naphtha) would work just as well a solvent i would think, right? i plan on taking organic chemistry this summer(i only have a small background in chem.) and I find these vids great tutorials. hope to see more in the future!

why is he using a different organic solvent (dichloromethane) for the second extraction? Couldn't he have used ethyl acetate again?

As we have to release the pressure from the separatory funnel while extracting it is safe to do in a fume hood .
Anybody can tell me why should we acidify the liquids while extracting ?

Protip for new Ochem students:
