There is an article by Desmond Morris on the Daily Mail site that explains they give elephants signals on their ears to do the painting. It is really worth reading. It doesn't sound cruel the way they make them paint. Unfortunately they need a tourism job to be kept around. They sound like lovely animals. Very interesting.

Furthermore, to many Asian cultures, they are very holy, and thus quite well looked after. The painting is an exception: the mahouts are in fact in control here, which is wrong.

The "Zoo question" really is a mixed bag. The "wild" often is the best option if it is available. People however will never learn to appreciate this aspect of these creatures without exposure, and one of the only ways to see and identify these traits is through captivity.
Though hardly universal, perhaps a reasonably sized handful of people might sit down, see this clip, and suddenly care just a little more about the welfare and survival of these creatures than they would have otherwise.

Finally, to anyone who has seen the elephant painting videos, these are a the result of very cruel and consistent punishment at the end of barbed metal hooks and it is imperative that we stop purchasing them or supporting these organizations. What you don't see on those YouTube videos is the elephant urinating in fear as it is handed the paint brush.

Elephants shouldn't have to perform circus tricks; its so undignified for such gentle and wise creatures.
I do think that it should be allowed that humans and elephants can work together, like we can ride them and they can use their superior strength for things we can't do, but they should be treated with absolute respect.

If I was an elephant I would prefer the circus to fending for myself in the wild. What if the elephant likes to paint and be fed by people? Those elephants didn't look upset to me. What about all the people who are employed in the circus? What would happen to them if they weren't allowed to work with the elephants? Quit being so racist against elephants.

The "Zoo question" really is a mixed bag. The "wild" often is the best option if it is available. People however will never learn to appreciate this aspect of these creatures without exposure, and one of the only ways to see and identify these traits is through captivity.
Though hardly universal, perhaps a reasonably sized handful of people might sit down, see this clip, and suddenly care just a little more about the welfare and survival of these creatures than they would have otherwise.

they are just beaten till they learn how to paint..
then people come to you with an elephants saying that it was rescued from abusive treatment...
this is sick - painting is not a natural thing elephants do..
it had to be trained - read: beaten - if you watch carefully - you can see him "shaking" and so trying not to make a mistake...
i have no idea why all of you get so excited - the video was criticized all over the world..
