Whilst being a volcanophile myself, I would not have personally gone that close, on the knowledge that Santiaguito does tend to have explosions on a regular basis and that any one of them could kill a human being effortlessly.

That must have been a cool experience! I am happy that the explosion wasn´t more violent and that you made it back safe because it can be very dangerous to be so close to an active volcano vent. So I would not recomend anyone going closer to a active volcanic vent than what is recommended. Did you get any information on how close to the vent of this volcano you could go and still be safe before you approched the active vent?

If somebody wants to experience this, go to Kaqchikel Tours in Xela (Quetzaltenango) in Guatemala. They will take you to this insane place. It's hard to find a place more crazy than this.

It's a hard hike, but worth every pain in your muscles!!

Yes and with a bit of luck you can join the growing list of victims of this stupid game. The violence of the explosion is very and randomly variable.Bombs can be thrown far beyond the place from where the video was taken and small pyroclastic flows can affect all the flancs of the dome.

From volcanological interest the view from the top of Volcan de Santa Maria is much better, nicer and 100% safe.
