The purpose of the government is to protect the rights of its citizens, and any decisions made by the government must be made for the purpose of furthering that goal. Our constitution establishes a number of these rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These are the DUTIES of the government: when you have a right, the government MUST provide for that right. They MUST ensure I keep my life through protection with police and military forces for example.
The founders were DEISTS not CHRISTIANS don't confuse yourself! When Jefferson was referring to god you might as well replace it with nature because that's what he was saying, we're born free and government shouldn't take that away. It was never intended for government to be to enforce the church's agenda in the name of maintaining ethics. They left out the last part of the panal, "Establish a law for educating the common people. This it is the business of the state" Law is for ORDER NOT MORALS
