  • What a tool, "prepare for government". I'll never forget it. One of the biggest political gaffes of all time. Pity for David Steel that he never got the chance to become deputy PM by selling his party out to the Tories like that poncified public school wanker Clegg.

  • @charliepeebles

Without the Falklands War, it was a very legitimate possibility.

  • Go back to your constituencies and prepare... to be shafted by CMD and the Old Etonian mafia.

  • Ha ha ha , brilliant :D

  • David Steele legalized abortion, just disgusting.

  • @Ken0009100

    How is abortion disgusting??

Would you rather live in world where women are forced to birth children.Despite the fact that they are unwanted or could be born severly ill. Or could even die in the process of birth. And live in a chronically overpopulated world.

  • Go back to your constituancies, and prepare for............

    a bit of a disappointment.

  • If David Steel was manager of Blackpool he would be telling their fans to go home and preapare for a premiership winning season!

  • 01:14 "Go back to your constituencies and prepare for government", absolute corker! Thanks for posting this, it's been years since I last saw it.

  • Now these lads are on the brink of gaining power..what a joke

  • WTF?!I thought it was that hopper not some...xD

  • didnt he do well? LOL

  • Errrm,28 years later-and we're still waiting...lol

  • "He's gone from rising hopeful to elder statesman in record time and with absolutely no interval in between!"

    - Michael Foot on David Steel in 1979. How right he was.

  • Michael Foot stole this phrase from Bertrand Russell. Not surprising. Labour leaders never had an idea of their own.

  • @oresme1 Labour leaders had at least one idea of their own, the form a party and over take the liberals. And they did!

  • @TomTresh3

It was a reaction to a certain Myndir, but something went wrong.

When Labour wants to achieve something, they should be quick. The socialist century is over. Until now their result is not very good.

  • @martijn1111 I don't think Labours time is over. If it was the tories would have called another election to get a majority government. They didn't, because they knew many people who voted Liberal would vote Labour in a second election. I beleieve this ConDem government will be a one term one and Ed Milliband will replace Cameron in Number 10!

  • @TomTresh3 It would be funny if there was another Hung Parliament after the 2015 General Election, this time in favour of Labour, and then the Liberal Democrats had to change sides to help Ed Milliband! I think the whole country would be up in arms...

  • @flametaledfox I agree that would be interesting to say the least. Not impossible either. Of course, Clegg would use his "national interest" argument.

  • oh David you're so marvelously witty!

  • no it was not a real possibilty back then liberals head in the clouds and in the sand .

  • What an airy fairy prat!

  • Absolutely brilliant Chris ! I've been trying to capture this and failed, so I'm very pleased you've done it ! I was actually there when he made this speech - albeit watching in the bar !
