Great tenor in both popular and classical singing. Possibly because of artists like Bing Crosby the tenor voice fell out of popularity with the masses in the 1930s?
No idea but Melton did switch to opera in the late 30s when his genre did fall out of popularity. Then if it weren't for WWII and the shortage of European singers, the Met probably wouldn't have hired them as they didn't like to engage pop tenors. Today he is almost unknown, especially in opera. He was a competent tenor in some light roles and even not a bad Pinkerton but I think he was possibly over confident in his abilities. If he was offered it I'm sure he would have done Radames.
Bellissima. V V Good song. V Nice version by Melton.
