Yes, it is definitely Uesugi Kenshin. I can imagine the pain he has felt to see such a worthy foe disappear, and remind him of his own inevitable death, and that the times of their rivalry were indeed a things of their youth and past.
@parigott4 Yes, I took this directly from the Criterion release. The enclosed booklet describes this scene and mentions it's omission in the theatrical japanese release.
Oh I see, but many japanese also cannnot understand the man is "Kenshin Uesugi " without snow scenery.
Because in fact the castle is famous Hikone-jo, not Kenshin's.
And it's difficult a liitle to image him or his portrait from this costume. We had typical image about him like clean Monk with superhuman volitional power.
His base is in Heaviest snowfall area in Japan so the shot of scenery on the outside is significant and useful.
Ah so this is Uesugi Kenshin? I thought it's Shogun Ashikaga all along!

@parigott4 nor I. This man did not play Oda In my VHS but he can be seen in the flash cuts. This scene of snow is not there either.

Why do you like this scene?
I wonder most people except Japanese cannot realize who this man is, and the story between Shingen and him.

The Criterion version has commentary that sheds light on the background. Story aside I enjoyed the combination of the location, weather and silence.

However, to begin with, the real Shingen died at May on the current calendar, in that season the snow doesnot fall in Kenshin's Area too.
The castle with Grand tower made first by Nobunaga in 1578, the battle at Nagashino of last scene is in 1575.
Kurosawa gave priority to brave image production powerful persuasive power than Accurate historical investigation.
Kenji Mizoguchi also did similar.
