In classes I teach, the original film is virtually unknown to my students. Moreover, this video was brought to my attention by someone who had no clue as to the existence of the original film, and happened to be a Depp fan who responded to the underlying story.

@cassyhungerson Because it's based off the story Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce. :) In the story, the man being hanged is a civilian on the confederate side of the revolution. A Federation scout (dressed like a confederate) rides to his house, and the condemned man makes the mistake of admitting to his plan to set fire to some dry brush by the bridge to cause trouble for the Union. The Union has posted signs all around the bridge that if anyone tries to do this, they are hanged.
