So was he obsessed or did she use his song so he killed her? That's my biggest question cause there seems to be virtually no clues to why. And the army guy was obviously her lost lover.
@ShimahiroLTD He was disillusioned young man (apparently a veteran) and I have a feeling the nurturing, idealistic music she was singing throughout the film really pushed him over the edge and he wanted it stop.
Nashville is a cinematic masterpiece and Ronee Blakley's performance is absolutely captivating. I watch this movie once or twice a year just to remind myself what quality film-making is all about.
Thank You Robert Altman RIP for bringing this and the other 'Nashville performances to life...a high point of late 20th century culture...and Ronne is luminous
I would like to say thank you to the whole cast and crew of Nashville for blessing me with such beautiful music, love, and joy! Bless y'all! xoxox! I love Nashville! I hate sin and evil! I hate ugliness! Sin and evil are UGLY!
What really makes this so good is that is both a gentle spoof of Coal Miner's Daughter and also a perfect representation of everything that type of song stood for.
Back in the mid-70s, and before videos, David Jaffer (then long-haired students) and I would see this film time and time again the Cambridge Arts Theatre. This was my favourite song.
Ronee Blakley was incredible in this movie. She improvised the scene in which she has a sort of breakdown...it's amazing. What happened to her? She should do a tour. I bet she'd get tons of people out.
Barbara Jean has been established as the most innocent and the most talented of the singers--and the most vulnerable--and here with her big song (I love it that Sueleen is mouthing the lyrics along with her), she pulls everything together. She shows us not only what true talent but also what genuine national sentiment really is--what the country felt it lost during Watergate. You see why that woman that Pauline Kael wrote about seated next to her started sobbing in this scene.
I agree. I almost get chills when I see the American Flag rolling in the background. Not just for sentiment about our country, but the eerie symbolism
This is a prime candidate for the great American movie: that shot of the wind rippling the giant flag amid this montage. Pauline Kael wrote while watching this, someone next to her quietly started sobbing...watch the whole thing to see why.
This is one of the best scenes from one of the best movies ever made. The song is great, and as she sings it the way the camera focuses on the guys face out in the audience before changing to an american flag....soooo powerful. all hail Altman.
@goback3spaces It absolutely is. I love all of Altman from that whole 70s period. McCabe and Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, and Thieves Like Us are equally brilliant.
This is a hard song to sing! Notice how she spaces the breathing into unexpected places, so some lines flow together, uninterupted. Amazing job! (I guess it helps that she wrote it.)
A magnificent performance from a film masterpiece.

In this part of the film, the face of David Hayward as Kenny Frasier thrills me. Ronee is an excellent singer, such a voice!!

@BADSYNE as usual because of craving and jealousy of something not being his
Such people probably believe that by killing they will posses what they killed

Great song, great film. There a book out about the making of Nashville that even discusses the plot of Nashville 2.

What happened? She was too honest about herself. She admitted in an interview that she was a bisexual. The destroyed her career.
