Trent has a very large library of incredible tracks you've never heard of that sound nothing like the mainstream stuff like Starfuckers and Closer. NIN is a band that you can't fairly judge by just listening to their hit singles, there is a whole lot more to their music than that in my opinion.

I'm sorry guys, but even though The Downward Spiral, Broken, and Pretty Hate Machine have their good songs, not all of them are good. NIN didn't even really get good until The Fragile. Trent's musical genius shows in EVERY song on The Fragile and onwards. It's not all the same depression/suicidal-based crap. A lot of the lyrics have a lot more meaning than the same crap that is so repetitive on the first three CDs. The instrumental pieces really show Trent's genius even more.

Trent wrote La Mer while he was staying at a house by the ocean (when he was contemplating suicide). This was the only song to come out of that experience. It means the sea. Read the lyrics to the song, it makes much more sense:
