ok. a 'perm' short for 'permanent wave' is using chemicals to break the bonds in the hair and set them permenantly into a new shape. this new shape can be anything from a looser wave (just to add body) to a very tight afro curl :)

a common misconception, for some reason, is that a perm is a relaxer, when they are actually opposites.

perms make your hair curly, while relaxers make it straight.

so if youre of african ancestry, youre more likely getting a relaxer when you go to the salon, whereas if you are of european or asian ancestry you are more likely to be getting a perm
