  • However the weakness by the SADF is that it was built for a mobile, fast paced short battles. The SADF would withdraw rather than take casualties.

So it does not fight attritional battles.

  • How did the SADF win...the SADF & UNITA had superior coordination, ground itelligence, leadership, and training vs. the Cubans & FAPLA.

The FAPLA and Cubans had more men, tanks and artillery and even planes. But they were poorly used and coordinated.

However the FAPLA and Cubans were able to retreat in order since the SADF and UNITA did not have the numbers to completely destroy their enemies.

  • I hate to bust the numbers (as it WAS a SADF victory) but it was not 3500 vs 52000. You are forgetting about some ~ 30 000 UNITA fighters that were on the SADF side.

  • magnus malan die.. we remember kwazulu massacre..apartheis is die with him....

  • @tomaluta He has already died and went to heaven

  • @azanianlion vini, vidi and he die ..hilary cliton

  • Interesting battle, Cubans/FAPLA had the numbers, lots of tanks, artillery and a substantial air cover.

However the SADF/UNITA were better trained, motivated and coordinated. Also had great intelligence on enemy positions and dispositions. Also the weapons were high tech.

The battles were actually a SADF/UNITA battlefield victory but a Cuban/FAPLA political victory.

  • I did the sitreps for the whole of Op. Moduler. There is no doubt in my mind that we won attack after attack, battle after battle. They came all the way from Cuba and they died like pigs! 84498865BG Cpl L. Kriel Intelligence NCO Sector 20 Rundu 1986/87

  • ask people who lost love1 in both side. who realy make money from this? how american dollar was protected. if yIf you can enswer this question..you are emanpation is complet.

  • I´m not goin to question how won and who lost, but I wonder what´s the point of the South African´s to claim victory if still Angola is under MAPLA rule, I do not belive that crap that they have not intention to take over Angola, that´s BS,I know that he Cuban´s and S.A are big time liars claimng victory with their exaggerate figures of KIA ,but I can clearly see that socialism still rule Angola and the Petroria regime is long gone, to never come back .

  • @indiochorotega Maybe do some research. We (South Africa) claimed Victory in this War for one reason and that was we kept Communist Russia and the Cubans out of South Africa. That was the No:1 Objective and it was 100% Successful. The communists had a major requirement for South African soil to be theirs given it's strategic location. We were in Angola to stop their spread any further, taking Angola was never our objective. BTW we don't need to lie, we completed our objectives, Commies didn't.

  • @Venom0ZA As far as I know Russia was tring to over the WORLD not only SA,the USA has the same intention and fail as well they no longer control their back yard LATIN AMERICA,but are you telling me that SA would not be happy today with the vast natural resources from Angl.Men I heare that tale before for instance US involment in Central A. in the 80´s but clearly the intention was quite the oposite and with mayor casualties in both sides I have not intention to engage with anyone in a

  • @indiochorotega Yes, South Africa would have been happy with what it had, we had just about everything. We have what Angola has and more. SA won't try take over another Country knowing it has to give up Namibia at some stage anyway. Just think about it for a second, there's no point other than stopping Communism. To outsiders it would look like invading for resources but as a South African we knew it wasn't. We can't change your minds though, it's your right, but at least listen :)

  • @Venom0ZA argument but what I can not stand is the lies behind the real intentions since the creation of the world big contries have tried to take over small contries we all know that no matter who they are commies or Ruskies the all the same at the end even a heavy retard person knew that the US used SA to grab the Angolan resourses who is going to belive tha the US helped SA because they are or were "good Friends"

  • @indiochorotega We all know the U.S Intensions for resources most of the time. I assume you think the U.S took over control of the SADF? Not true, the SADF was a self thinking Military and only relied on U.S Intellegence to find Terrorists and what they were up to. It was never South Africa's mandate to 'invade' for resources. The U.S.A's role was Intellegence nothing more nothing less. If you recall the U.S.A and South Africa were and are Allies since the World Wars, they had to contribute.

  • @Venom0ZA Unfortunately my friend that is hard to believe due to the SA regime back in those days it is hard to believe that a ultraright regime had good intentions with their neighbors or the entire continent ,Cuba an ultraleft goverment had the same intentions but with diferent context ,two opposit ideologies with the same goal men that war has no winners only losers in both sides regardless what the two parties claim it is a sad true

  • @indiochorotega Riddle me this... How on earth is a white minority of which 97% of 2 million whites are Civilians, going to rule another African Country? Especially a Violently effected Angola by Civil War? If we 'Wanted' Angola and succeeded, we would still have had a Civil War on our hands to deal with. Use your heads people, come on! So No, South Africa didn't want Angola. The Whites in SA only wanted South Africa as their home, they had no History to hold them to Angola. Thats Truth!

  • @indiochorotega ...Another thing too, SA knew it was gooing to have to give up Namibia, So how the hell was it going to 'Rule' Angola when Namibia (A Buffer State) is gone? Any South African knows that and everything I said here, Black White, Coloured, Pink, Brown doesn't matter they all know. They all know we didn't 'Want' Angola. Ending on a good note, Indio, you have a nice Country and thanks for the chat, it seems we hit our own stalemate here :) and I'm fine with that. See you around YTube.

  • @Venom0ZA Well my friend is good to see that at least we are not really insulting each other over this topic like moust people do in tube despite our diferent opinions,in the 80´s I believed in "Marxismo" not today that does not mean I do in Capitalisim,we never experiense a war like our nieghbors but at the end I saw the big lies from the mayor players (USA-URSS) and I can see that the southern hemisphere of Africa suffer the same with no sustancial results to the civilian population

  • @indiochorotega Dude, think logically, when you have basically STOPPED an invasion on territory you control, and the attackers decide to pack up and leave, that means you have accomplished something and most people would say it was victory. Further, since their objective was finished, why the hell would they continue until they eradicate the other nations government system? Do you know how much that would cost? and time frame??! SA was under strict UN sactions at that time buddyman

  • Ja julle Kubane het lekker julle gatte gesien ne??!!!

Staan trots manne, Afrikaners bly koning!

  • What documentary is the footage from?

  • Fidel Castro eres un COMEMIERDA. You killed your own PEOPLE. CUBA SI FIdel NO ! !

  • What the documetary you used with Magnus?

  • It took 55,000 cubans, 3000,000 angolans, east germans, russians, swapo to push back 0ne small contry, and there were no allies here ecept for the Unita. The Yanks, pommies,Aussies were to shit scared to get involved. One small nation took on the whole commie nation no matter where they came from. If it was only Cuba and South Africa the Cubans wouldve got a massacare and they know it. See the spics are cowards as that they cannot fight man 2 man.note the gang wars all over the Americas COWARDS.

  • Buy the way one of the generals in charge of this operation was General Ochoa.

  • Right after this battle Castro summoned his army general in charge of this operation,Castro accused him of drug trafficking and shot him.The real reason was to loose a balttle than Castro directed himself.

  • This one, was a great cuban defeat..the dork Fidel Castro was directing operations from Havana. The cubans try to say they were winners but they are very far from the truth as is their communist system hahahahahah.GOOD VIDEO,THANKS FOR POSTING!

  • The American zero five, zero two and other sounds added on spoil this post. Otherwise it is real good.

  • Kyk hoe oulik werk daardie Noodies en Olifante !

  • Did Eben Barlow ever come close enough to observe or speak to Jonas Savimbi in person, during his time of service with SADF, before starting EO?

Also the Rooikat wasn't in service at the time of the Angolan wars, though the at-missile version of the Ratel was.

  • The FAPLA soldiers died, but after that the south africa cuit angola. Why? fear of the dead souls? Few years after went away from Namibia. It doesnt sound me as victory. ps: Now UNITA doesnt have army anymore

  • The SADF and SWATF would only do ops in Angola they didn't want to colonise the place merely take out the threat of a SWAPO build-up and then withdraw.

Why did Cuba not invade both SWA and SA as Castro said they would? Cuba sent troops to Angola to destroy UNITA why did they withdraw before that was done? Does that sound like a military victory to you?

  • fleuger99.. we went to war bcos all the politicien were incompetent...

how many cuba die ? how many sa die?

how many unita die? how many fapla die? all die for what?

  • Tomato, Where BS is being voiced it is almost sure that you'll be present. Stop talking kak and go back under your rock!!

  • well speak, fleuger99

  • @fleuger99 ,and where is your rock baboon?

  • I have a dog as a pet not a rock baboon? Any other intelligent questions?

  • 31 SADF DIE AND 3500 CUBAN N FAPLA

THIS IS A PROPAGANDA..you must be indoctrinate to accept this.

sadf and unita die cuba n fapla,,,,

why apartheid army do not revel the number of unita soldier....hahahaha racist minded. cut furdum

  • Fight to protect unita...where is unita today? Fight to protect our border..where is your border today....

HE WHO SHEDS HIS BLOOD WITH ME SHALL BE MY BROTHER.get of this real sites and go play with your lego WANKER.

  • "applauds"

  • The smell of a black mans shit is very overpowering.Worse than a polecat and once you smell the shit of youre enemy, you never forget it.

  • let fight to protect our border....

so who protecting your border now,,,

    ilusion or desilusion/

  • God your english is bloody awfull, I can't make out what you say half the time which leads me to think that you're just plain stupid anyway making silly comments about something that you clearly know nothing about.

  • SWAPO Goed geblikksem on the front, cowards absolute.Eendrag maak mag

  • Katy, you dishonor the memory of those who died in Cassinga on 4th May 1978 by claiming that those were Refugees & just women & children.

Swapo/Cuban/Russian indoctrination made it a refugee camp, we still have photos of that day including from your own peoples cameras...

  • Katy, SWAPO have always Dishonored those who Died at CASSINGA, by Claiming that they Buried Women & Children, and not PLAN fighters.

  • Katy. 4th of May is CASSINGA DAY,,,,,,,

  • How many of those so called, women & children were used as human sheilds? Parabats captured alot of military equipement including Civilian cameras that showed otherwise. I respect the site as that of Fallen Soldiers, not as you put it, Women & children, or is that what you learnt from your Cuban/Russian/ Lybian controllers?

  • the smell of Swapo terrs shtting in their pants was a terrible smell. We could smell their shit km's away, they knew we were comming to get them.Kaffirbasher is right, the smell of a black swapo mans shit is orrible.

  • SWAPO Goed geblikksem on the front, cowards absolute.Eendrag maak mag,Unity is strength.

  • Certainly not my unit, , It was definately the other way round, katy did you ever run? did you shit yourself, piss yourself on the run? its hard when you know that someone is tracking , catching up, and any moment, get you?

  • I was fought as querilla fighter, familiarise your self with the meaning of that. But we hit hard and despair.

  • Katyusha-Se moer! The smell of a black mans shit is very overpowering.Worse than a polecat and once you smell the shit of youre enemy, you never forget it.

  • lol, swapo were some of the most cowardly soldiers on the planet. At every contact they would just run.

  • drevil5001,the most cowardice army are those stop to exist, and their soldier scarted around the globe doing shit job, cleaning toilets, working as barman and security quard.Zuma needs you back I persume.

  • Thats exactly what the swapo army is doing now. Soldiers from the old sadf are fighting as mercs in iraq, afghanistan, and many other places. Ever heard what Executive Outcomes did to the sierra leone rebels? They got their asses kicked just like swapo. Please name one battle where swapo defeated the SADF without soviet help?

  • all the battles,I count count them lol, remember you created EO ?WHO WERE THE MAJORITY FIGHTING THERE LOL?EX SWAPO ANC FIGHTERS.

  • Can't even name one. Thats what I thought.

  • who did you voted for ANC?

  • oh please, I will never vote for the ANC. The only thing they are good at is keeping the poor people poor.

  • Thats what the ANC does before every election and then they do nothing. The level of incompetence in government departments is absolutely staggering. The ANC knows they will win every election so there is no motivation to actually do anything. SA need a strong opposition party to keep things in check. Its good that the DA has now defeated the ANC in the western cape. It will now show all the people how a more efficient party can run a province.

  • I understand, but why people like Pik Botha,Jan Geldenhys,FW dekerk had joined ANC? The whole NP,joined ANC?i CANT understand?

  • Those people never joined the ANC. The national party was dissolved and their leader (van schalkwyk) was given a job in government. The NP supported all went to other parties like the FF+ or the DA. Who told you botha, geldenhys and de klerk were ANC supporters? I mean de klerk was on TV the other day telling people not to vote ANC.

  • it is a true fact.make your research, the only people I am not sure of is General Malan,a very very close friend to Zuma and Mandela.

  • Thats just propaganda. Provide sources to back up your claim. Every time those guys have been interviewed they have voiced support for the opposition parties.

  • Of course the black soldiers were appreciated. 32 battalion was one the best and most revered units. There are many videos about 32 battalion and koevoet where blacks fought.

  • drevil5001,SWAPO was a very small guerrilla army, with a little number less than 5000 fighters, but we faced a modern army for more than 23yrs.our aim was clear, to free our mother land, and this what had happened. we were not fighting to militarily defeat SADF,that one was APARTHEID ideology wishing to defeat SWAPO,in 23bush war, that myth did no materialise, SWAPO is here to stay ,evils forces had gone with wind, your flags can only be seen in bed room. Ours is flying high in the blue sky.

  • The result of that war had very little to do with swapo. Militarily, swapo was little more than a nuisance. The war ended due to a number of factors. The soviet union collapsed so comminism could no longer spread in africa, international sanctions were hurting SA's economy, and the whites in SA wanted an end to apartheid (shown by the result of the referendum). A different flag might fly in SA but whites still control the entire economy. Not much has changed for blacks.

  • drevil5001,what is your honest view about youe friends comments, are you too a racist?read this idiot comments'' Katyusha-Se moer! The smell of a black mans shit is very overpowering.Worse than a polecat and once you smell the shit of youre enemy, you never forget it.

  • I am not racist at all. What other people write has nothing to do with me. My only reason for posting on this vid is that people try to make out that swapo was this great army when in fact they were a bunch of disorganised rebels who ran away at every contact.

  • Victoria Cubana? ha ha ha

  • @soyhemorroide My friend you must truely be dumb!

  • @soyhemorroide just because we didnt have air superiority doesnt mean we didnt provide cover for our soldiers on the ground. the statistics of the last 6 months of the South-west africa / agola conflict for SAAF reads as follow : 683 sorties were flown in support of our soldiers . we did 144 air raids in 191 days, with a total of 3068 bombs delivered, over 100 SAM misiles were fired with 1 fatality.do the math 180 days(6 months) devided by 683 sorties = 3.79 sorties a day for SA on da ground

  • @mirageF1AZ not to have air superiority, it's amazing the number of missions and bombs dropped, that information is not in the network it gives me a different dimension of air operations, it was really dangerous the mig-23 and missil R-23

  • @soyhemorroide dont get me wrong I am a White south-African and I know allot on this conflict ( I am a history teacher ) Anyways I will upload a SAAF video wich explains the statistics in more detail soon. But yes it is amazing that they could fly so many sorties, drop bombs and not getting our assess kicked.

  • 52 000 cuban troops....Could you imagine..how much did it cost to Cuba to keep those troops..?..while the cuban people are living in hardships and struggling to survive...Castro spent millions of dollars in supportins Angola..where are the war protester..?

and blaming the embargo for the economy problems in Cuba..!

  • Katyusha75, i agree with you. i've make my thoughts known on youtube about such things, using choppers for culling animals in Etosha and elsewhere. And also people like Eugene de kock, i'm just annoyed when it's one-sided. But hopefully people like Robert McBride land in jail too and make the free world a slightly better place to live in:)) Has the flooding up north effected you at all?

  • that's weird i wrote the above comment yet it has Katyusha75 name on it. Do you think i hacked your youtube account Katyusha75 ?:))

  • Kalahari, for some reason your comment did not display on blog,so I coppied from my in box and pasted it here,so it can appear on the blog.this is a very important comment you made.

  • Katyusha75, thanks for that.

so has the water subsided in Nam yet?

  • KalahariSurf, yes water has gone to Etosha pan, the water has subsided.

  • that's an amazing site when the pan is covered in water

  • we must accept history of southern africa n we cannot change it as it was written with southern africa people blood n cuba blood.

we must be proud of our history - boer fight british opression n we fight anglo, boer, dutch, africaner*usa opression

  • we pay homage to the sons and daughters of Namibia,Angola,Cuba, and South Africa who sacrificed their lives for for tottal leberation of our countries,we so happy that people are living in peace and harmony with bieng victimised by burutal Apartheid evil dark forces.

  • Katyusha75, how many times did both SWAPO and ANC Cadres mutiny against both their conditions in bases in Angola and against the Angolan government. If you REALLY were in PLAN you would know this.REmember when Castrils visited to try quell the uprising? Remeber how brutally the other uprisings were dealy with? How many Angolan civilains have the Tornadoes killed since 1990? I thought the Angolans were friends of Namibia.Let's talk brutal regimes now

  • Kalahari mutiny not that we know, but I know some APARTHEID sponsored rebellion, and we dealt with accordingly, read Dirk Coetzee `s book he had shed more right ,and confessed how former apartheid national intelligence worked so tersely to infiltrated liberation movement, to cause disunity and chaos. we dealt with them seriously.that was rebellion, not mutiny.mutiny wasknown among fromer apartheid troops and its proxy like SWATF&32BN ETC.praat ek kak?

  • Read Ronnie Kastrils, and then tell me it was merely a sponsored rebellion. Why did SAm not agree to a TRC for the SWAPO purges? You claimed KOEVOET was riddled with planted SWAPO spies, so why didn't they stage rebellions?

    i think it's called a selective memory:))

  • I have a copy for new updated edtion ARMED&DANGEROUS by Comrade Ronnie Kasrils a person friend of mine, in Zamb which page did He mentioned that?

  • Kalahari, did you mean Comrade Ronnie Kasrlils I have a copy of his book, and He is my best friend for many many struggle years.which page did He mentioned something like that.Read his book again titled ARMED &Dangerous ISBN 1868420639.

  • a personal friend of yours? so ask him why he went to Angola to try quell the ANC mutiny about conditions in SWAPO camps and how unpopular the Angolan government wass withthe people of Angola. Also why did the Tornadoes kill so many Angolan civilians after Namibian "inDIPaDance"?

  • I know most of boys in that Unit, in former Tornadoes now with a new name l disciplined and well trained Unit,by , Russian& Israel in no way can they be involved in Killing civilians, the only blame you can associate it with them ,is the elimination of Savimbi he was an obstacle for permanent peace in Angola. Comrade Kasrils and the great fighter Chris Hanni went to Angola for an investigation, not to quell APARTHEID SPONSERED Rebellion.I know for sure, because I was there.

  • tell that to the Angolan civilains that were murdered that they are well trained and disciplined. And i believe it was intel from EO operatives that lead to the killing of Savimbi, but that's how Africa deals with political opposition, by eliminating them .Just look at the Caprivi strip and also the kuk between COPE and the ANC.Also others, including Kastrils, tell of another story of life in SWAPO camps in Angola

  • who took eo to Angola ANC&SWAPO.Kalahari it is all over with brutal machinery, there are thousand of ex apartheid killer confessed and jailed for ever tell me any of ANC/SWAPO jailed because of any atrocity.Jacques Pauw wrote a book called Into The Heart Of Darkness,Confessions of Apartheid`s EVIL,you should tell us about the THE BOOK ISBN 186842058-2.

  • a thoussand people in jail, i challenge you to name 100. maybe the reason you don't know of the atrocitoes committed by SWAPO is vecasue SAm refused to have a TRC, he knew all the shit he caused. Killing his own supporters, kidnapping school kids and post indepence killing civilians from the counry that harboured him. And bollocks the ANC and SWAPO did not take EO to Angola, they where paid by the Angolan government , the ANC government banned EO

  • let's talk of all the corrupt ANC politicains that are released or spared jail sentences, the travelgate incident being the most recent. Let alone the ANC denying all the shit in Zim. Animal Farm, read it with an open mind and tel me that it's not a mirror of all liberation governments in Africa

  • KlahariSurf,I agree with you, I for one hate corruption, and feel that all corrupted politician belongs to jail. your remember when the corrupted ex-SADF general traded diamonds & ivory, that the total amount of smuggled ivory or rhino horn was virtually impossible to estimate. The devastation was vast, elephants tusk and rhino horns, while you conscripts were suffering in the Angolan jungle pretending fighting swaart gevaar, something never existed.

  • yes lot of bilion of rang n energy went to this war, angola pay the price too- but the question we should be asking now is why all this sacrifice - did our politiciens did the good job?(est germany n ouest germany never fight)

  • I'm with you on that one. In theory, everybody should have lived happily ever after. In practise, the poor people are still poor and the violence kept going - just took on a different shape.

  • sadf fight with unita against fapla, swapo but all your comment never mention unita apport in this conflit?? why?

for cuba to come far from america n to change the equation in angola war, force sadf to abandone cuito n to leave swa

  • I guess for the same reason that you dont mention all the Russians, East Germans, ANC terrorists, SWAPO terrorists, MPLA plus all the other communist countries that strengthened your numbers. And you forget to mention the USSR paid for all the Cuban reeinforcements to come to Cuito.... we had to pay our own way. US helped UNITA. Does not mean we dont respect UNITA - they were our allies.

  • The terrorists were the racist white south african minority, swapo and ANC were freedom fighters.Cuban are our friends and comorades in arms.Just like you forgoten to mentioned about zionist Israel who send pilots,Chile,USA and their constructive engagement.Who controled the funds that usa sent to Unita?Beacause you peole are still sweaming in the Apartheid sea,you fail to recognise unita who died for you in thousand.

  • as opposed to the cubans, russions, and angolans that died for you? That's not to mention the 100's of SWAPO supporters that were killed for speaking out about the SWAPO leadership. It's animal farm - fight for freedom, but fight for your freedom to kill others. Why did SWAPO kill more Black civilans and their own supporters than they did SADF/SWATF military personnel? Was it because they were your real enemy or just easier targets?

  • so there! this time u make them shat up his excellence professor katyusha

  • If this is the level of knowledge held by your professors, I would hate to meet some of the veterans without university education!

  • Tomaluta,it is all lies their are telling SADF,had more than 9000 troops in Angola exculding 50000 unita regular troops.there were less than 2000 cubans in cuito areas.

  • OK, so its all bullshit what Jorge Risquet (Director of the Cuban Central Committee for Africa) said in this interview? (Go to 5min10sec). That Cuba could not kick the SADF out with the 20,000 or so troops they had in the area AND that they had to bring in massive reinforcements (their best men) from Cuba? You must be living under a rock!

  • 3500 sadf south afrikaner defence force were supported by how many unita??

  • Tomaluta,it is lies their telling SADF,more than 9000 troops exculding 50000 unita regular troops.there less than 2000 cubans in cuito areas.

  • ANC was dismantled and outlawed but cuito cuanavale domino effect set mandela free, namibia free,,sadf was dead. please i do respect you but my opinion is different

  • I would like it to read like this; 3500 men launched an decisive attack on what was left of the ANC led alliance killing 70000 cadres. This was the turning point for the war in SA. A white government was installed to clean up the rest of the country from criminals and murderers. All non SA citizens were repatriated and order was restored. The country started a program of business development and the remnants of the ANC was dismantled and outlawed-once again

  • Good stuff .....thx

  • I was told the same story by two different people; one a tank commander SADF and the other a para path finder both ivolved in combat between 87-89. In some Cuban tanks was shot out they found remains of the driver and loader/gunner chained to the tank ; fapla soldiers. The only logical explanation; so that they could not bail out and run, you fight or die fighting. They never found Cuban soldiers in this manner.

Does anyone know if there are truths to these accounts ???

  • Comment removed

  • fapla was band of freedom fighter who with fnla and unita kick portugues ass.

wow how many cuban die? how many unita die? if you aply the logic you will compare the lost of unita with fapla. and sadf with cuba..lol

  • I hear a story that at tthis peace talks the person representing Cuba made this threat to South Africa "If SA does not withdraw from Angola they would send in another 10 000 soldiers" To this the SA representative answered "Well in that case we will send in another 1000 to stop them"

Dont know if it is true, would like to think it was......

  • Brilliant! There may be some truth in it LOL

  • Excellent video.......I was there!

  • Great stuff .Good one.

  • great video well done

  • great video ! Well done
