Why are American cars so big??? It's unnecessary and I hope one day they realize that bigger isn't always better...the bigger the car, the more raw material and horsepower you need...do as the British do and make small sports cars. The cars would cost half as much! And American cars are generally practical and sometimes reliable (minus Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge)...I think European cars are built with everything in mind(:

The lotus is a purpose built, fast, light, track car. The Mustang is a V8 powered coupe, which handles like an ocean liner, and goes fast in a straight line. The V8 is there to sound cool, not to perform, but it certainly CAN perform with the right mods. The handling is fixable too. Both of those things for cheaper than the Lotus. Stock though, these are two completely different things which should never be compared. Everything goes out the window when power to weight ratios are this different.

KC-Imports will ship and register a V6 Mustang in the UK for just £25 (the price of a RenaultSport Megane 250, which is still slower than the Mustang). European cars simply can't compete with new American cars, even with the added costs of importing them to the UK.

They always do this in this show, they bring two completely different cars that cant really be in the same class, the Lotus is a car that is no more heavy than 2000lbs and stuffed with a supercharged engine making around 200ish HP that is a killer combination, u just cant compare a Mustang wich is around 3800lbs, even if it has a V8 making 300hp its just not gonna happend, i can take a Miata and gut it completely and stuff an LS1 in the nose and it will shit on the lotus on the track.
@Chris35g Ofc, i think a v8 swap miata is around 3500 or 4000 if u choose to use a 5.0 ford motor since a kit is already sold with everything for 3000 dollars and all u need is a 5.0 wich can be found in a lot of cars, one from an explorer for example, a good low milage 5.0 is around 600 bucks and with 300 lbs of torque and 220 hp is good power for a light miata, ofc an LS1 is better and more powerful but they get more expensive, budget wise the 5.0 wins.
They really should have put this up against the Corvette. This was a predictable result that they could have done better with. They should have put it up against a car more in it's class.

@ALusk11 What??? A base 5.0L GT would lose! You mean the 2012 Roush Stage 3 Mustang! 540HP and 465ft-lb of torque with IRS suspension ( which replaces the live-rear-axle). Roush's are made for track racing and handling. They would be the better choice for the Exige!
@ALusk11 this lotus is almost a full second faster to 60, and well over a second faster in a quarter mile. The only thing a 5 point slow would be smoking is lotus exhaust.
i dont think this is quite a fair race, i think the lotus exige is more in the realm of the shelby or boss mustang rather than a stock gt. The lotus is basically a high performance street race car while the mustang they used here is basically just a normal road car. Not much of a surprise that the pony car lost but it would have been a better race against the boss mustang if you ask me.
@ndelcourt7 you'd need a mustang with good handling, since that doesn't exist, you could still put a V12 in it and...and nothing. Unless that same race had no bends. Or maybe if it was a ZR1 instead.
And Lotus isn't exactly known for their supercars, so if anything, thats a pony too. Just look at the list of times still in front of it at the topgear table. Not like the mustang was facing some sort of colossus.

@Chris35g Ofc, i think a v8 swap miata is around 3500 or 4000 if u choose to use a 5.0 ford motor since a kit is already sold with everything for 3000 dollars and all u need is a 5.0 wich can be found in a lot of cars, one from an explorer for example, a good low milage 5.0 is around 600 bucks and with 300 lbs of torque and 220 hp is good power for a light miata, ofc an LS1 is better and more powerful but they get more expensive, budget wise the 5.0 wins.

I get it is a cool car, but they allowed to go there on sleek tires. That means that the Pagani Zonda R, which is a legal production vehicle should be at the top of the list, even now.
Lets face it, they are being a little bit unfair because that car is British. But don't get me wrong, British engineering has always been fantastic, like in the case of say, the McLaren MP4/12C for example.
But they are being a bit unfair here.

The lotus is a great car n all.....but for about the same price you could get a vette with alot more power, and comfort, and kickass burnouts, with an opportunity to supercharge it for even more fun. You could pretty much race the mustang against anything short of a buntcake and it will lose sad to say. If Ford would at least entertain the idea of an aluminum Mustang at some point then we would have something to talk about.

@ALusk11 What??? A base 5.0L GT would lose! You mean the 2012 Roush Stage 3 Mustang! 540HP and 465ft-lb of torque with IRS suspension ( which replaces the live-rear-axle). Roush's are made for track racing and handling. They would be the better choice for the Exige!

i dont think this is quite a fair race, i think the lotus exige is more in the realm of the shelby or boss mustang rather than a stock gt. The lotus is basically a high performance street race car while the mustang they used here is basically just a normal road car. Not much of a surprise that the pony car lost but it would have been a better race against the boss mustang if you ask me.

@ndelcourt7 you'd need a mustang with good handling, since that doesn't exist, you could still put a V12 in it and...and nothing. Unless that same race had no bends. Or maybe if it was a ZR1 instead.
And Lotus isn't exactly known for their supercars, so if anything, thats a pony too. Just look at the list of times still in front of it at the topgear table. Not like the mustang was facing some sort of colossus.
