never was horrified by the film. it was almost inspirational. One man completely devoting himself to one goal. despite being a creep, he was one determined SOB.
@IncredibleFulk1 I only said that because whenever most people think of cape Fear they think of Robert Mitchum, so that's why im saying he is underrated but he did a badass job
@gonzalesjon58 Underrated? Almost everyone I know knows about DeNiro's performance in this film. It was THAT great. In fact, I'm going to be him for halloween this year. I just need to find the right type of shirt and hat. LOL
DeNiro did an incredible job in this movie. This scene set in stone just what an unstoppable psycho Max is. He looks like his body was made for violence.
OK, if anyone's curious about the pictures, from top left to right: Nietzsche, Saint Philip of Jesus (???), Gen. Patton, Captain Marvel and Black Bolt, Captain Marvel versus Stellarax, Gen. Robert E. Lee, Josef Stalin, Entrance of Alexander the Great into Babylon
@FlusherD12 why hitler over stalin? he has his reasons, u have urs, and btw, u have a picture of hitler in ur cell in a georgia prison, u better be ready die or ready to kneel, cuz ur fucked
@williamrafe1 Surely with all the white supremacists probably in Georgia prisons it would probably be OK? Whereas Stalin is communist and communism is universally hated in America.
@graemeoliver84 theres white supremacists in most prisons, but in a georgia prison, theres about 5 blacks for every white, then alone white supremacist. u'd still get ur shit rocked. i dont think anyone would give a fuck about having communist stalin, since most dont recognize communisms because of its own stupidity
@FlusherD12 stalin was more dangerous and just as willing to commit horrible attrocities against anyone including his own people. he also was much more intelligent and cunning than hitler ever was. hitler was more or less a dillusional fool (called a genius because he brought germany out of recession...well fueling the economy with an impetous like territorial conquest isn't THAT genius), while stalin understood very clearly the realities around him in a very real and scary way.
ahhh Hitler was a tactical genius, stalin on the other way complete imbecil who killed thousands of his own officers. Why do you think the Russian army was so defenceless again the superior Third Reich?
Hitler was a genius compared to that dimwitted jew.
@FlusherD12 U obviously don't know much about this subject based on ur remarks (can't believe i'm starting into an argument on stalin and hitler from a clip from "CapeFear" haha!) Stalin was NOT Jewish, LOL! Hitler was no tactical genius either. He made several tactical errors & surrounded himself by fanatic fools and yes men.All of his good generals were dismissed since they actually dared to speak up about his ludicrous plans (like the Ardennes offensive & stalingrad) which led to his defeat
@FlusherD12 Stalin was much more the cunning leader. he rose to power in a volatile political landscape, and held it till death, turned round the tides of the german offensive, actively employed intelligent officers, built a large and far reaching intelligence agency, made the Soviet Union into the most powerful nation on earth (along with the USA) and did not waste it away on pointless wars like Hitler, who made one wrong decision after another to ensure his downfall.
Ok first off The German army was defeated because they were fighting on two fronts.... Plus The Wermacht consisted of 3 million German soldiers when they invaded russia. They killed 20 million Russians in the process but in the end Russia had soo many men at her disposal,it was quantity that beat Quality( German Army).
Haha Stalin was cunning leader?? Why was the Soviet Union raped in the first 2 years of the war? Oh yes that's right Stalin had a poor equipt army.
@FlusherD12 And you're right...the Germans lost because they opened up two fronts....This was a tactical error, and it was Hitler's idea to do so. So your boy Hitler who is apparently a military genius made a classic mistake and tried to fight two wars at once, rather than taking on his foes one at a time. Napolean understood that the best way to defeat your enemy is to divide and conquer..(although he also made mistakes that led to his downfall). But thanks for prooving my point though.
@FlusherD12 we were arguing over who was the smarter man. u said hitler was a military genius, then u proved urself he wasn't. when i pointed that out, u say "i totally agree" then start talking about nazi ideology and how it is better than communism. well nazi ideology has failed and become a joke, held on to only by ignorant skinheads, while communism is still upheld in many govenments. no wonder u call hitler a genius, u are a branwashed racist. u definately have no education
How can you say communism was benificial when infact soo many people despised it. By reading this I have come to the conclusion that you are just another Jew.
Hitler fulfilled his duty as leader of Germany to deprive the WW2 victors of ultimate victory had the greatest figure in world history been captured alive. The world witnessed the communist jews heinously murder Mussolini so Hitler spared the German youth the trauma of another such scene.
@FlusherD12 I'm no communist, and i'm not jewish. i'm not even saying communism is picture perfect. i'm just saying its a more realistic and a successful ideology than nazism(which was right out to lunch) The only thing that allowed nazi's to come to so much power was the desperation of the german people& the tedency for german military to be very efficient and proffesional. the biggest weakness of germany during ww2 was it's fanatical pro-nazi government which was doomed to failure.
Communism being more realistic??? Communism was just as hated as the Nazi Ideaology. Why do you think there were soo many people coperated with the nazis. Eg Finalnd, Ukraine, Romania etc etc. The majority were all against Communism. Look at the Romanian revolution in 1989. They brought down that filthy communist dictator Nicholas. Communism is no way better that National Socialism. Nicholas bathed in riches while his people starved.
@FlusherD12 the german military also had inherent weaknesses(again largely thanks to hitler's innitiative)they had a habit of spending to much on technological research& invested in overly expensive weaponry which was complicated to build& took to long to produce. The konigs tiger was a powerful tank, but to expensive, to difficult to maintain, took to long to build.the russians had tanks that were simpler, less costly, easier to maintain and just as effective(if not more so) ex: t34, t44, t28.
Second off, Hitler did not bath in riches like other dictators did... eg ( stalin, tu tsong etc etc). He wanted the best for the German people after what happened to them in WW1 which is why he created more jobs for people. Hitler was extremely more intelligent person than Stalin ever was. Look at how Hitler rose to power, through powerful speeches and self will power.
You dirty Communist Russians/Asians were lucky Germany was fighting on two fronts.. hahaha
Destroyed by 25 million russian soldiers, 2 million British soldiers and 2 million American soldiers, considering the SS numbered no more than 1 million and the German army no more than 3 million, I would say the fact that it took 6 years to defeat the nazis speaks volumes about the power of the idealogy and the subtance of the Nazi warrior, they were the greatest fighting force of the 20th century
@FlusherD12 I'm not denyning that the german soldiers weren't extremely well trained and disciplined. But that is just a German trait.... they have always hd proffesional militaries, look at the Prussians and the soldiers in WW1. Hitler isn't, and wasn't responsible for German military proffessionalism. And Rommel was more of a military genius than Hitler (who wasn't a military genius) but yet Hitler did not like Rommel, because Rommel dissagreed with his tactics.
@FlusherD12 At Stalingrad, the Russians played a delaying game with the Germans & fed enough troops into the city to keep enough of it in thier hands.they also let the winter do it's work.meanwhile they built up huge forces in the rear and when they were ready, swung round & attacked the weak German flanks on either side & closed them right off.Hitler refused to allow his troops to break out (which was a huge mistake on his part) and he lost a massive German army as a result.Good job Hitler.
@Salvus967 Hitler liberated untold millions who had been enslaved by the British empire while the death blow that Hitler delivered the communists saved perhaps 650 million from the Soviet bullet to the back of the head.
@FlusherD12 bottom line though, you are an ignorant racist and you clearly are not properly educated. you are not worth my time, i've already proved my point and you have helped me to achieve this. this conversation is becoming ridiculous, based on the movie clip the thread is about. please empty your heart of bitterness and hatred, so that you fill your head with truth and fact.
@mcdaddy9999 It could be Saint Sebastian, who was persecuted and shot with arrows and left for dead...he survived though, and was nursed back to health after which he continued preaching...so if I'm right, it's just another excellent choice by Scorsese in using symbolism for the way Deniro's character, Max Cady, is feeling...he feels he was persecuted, and now that he's about to be let back out of prison, he's returning from the dead.
I heard this was a hard part for DeNiro-not only did he near wear himself out physically to get this look, he actually had nightmares for months even after they finished filming because he just could not get Max Cady out of his head.
Watching Cape Fear in a cinema back in 1991, I was blown away both by DeNiro's portrayal of Max Cady and his physical transformation. I researched it at length but found very little: Dan Harvey, his personal trainer, said he had never worked with someone that focused. Interesting detail: I researched pretty much all the books we see in this scene, found this: THe Cell Within is the name of an episode of Miami Vice in which a criminal's name is Jake Manning. Gotta love Scorcese for that stuff!
No way. The final piece was cut off. The guard offers Cady his books and he replys "already read 'em" and then the great shot where Cady walks right into the camera lens. Thats the complete Max Cady intro
Here you see De Niro at end of prime and start of decline. His performance as Cady has an intensity/ferocity (even in calm moments) that is truly amazing. Yet, in houseboat showdown he cranks the intensity up another notch but after reaching next level he cannot sustain it. It's like he has it one moment, the next it is gone, then he gets it back, then it slips away again. De Niro could control that level of craft a few years earlier but not anymore. He hasn't reached these heights again.
@industrialsun i would have to say the start of his decline was when he started taking comedy roles like paul vitti, which was still entertaining, to the cia guy from meet the parents, which was bad. basicly, de niro still held his own until the late 90s in my opinion.but yea, its bad now.u can always tell an actor is done, especially a good actor, when they start taking comedy roles, but at least de niro hasnt done any straight tom dvd movies yet, which is great. unlike jackie chan, who isnt 65
@williamrafe1 I agree that was when his quality of films/abilty to select films declined (or plummeted). For a De Niro fan like me, it exposed what I suspected/dreaded for a few years: that he was choosing good projects that did not require that much heavy lifting for him acting-wise. After the early 90s, his films were usually good but performances were just competent and professional. Now that his films and acting are forgettable, I have to conclude his last truly exceptional work was in CF.
@williamrafe1 Casino is a good/not great film. It is something of a mixed bag. While a good-looking, well-executed film with a few moments of that De Niro/Pesci magic, it is least interesting of the 8 Scorsese/De Niro films, De Niro is actually miscast in his role, and the film just does not contain any surprises. De Niro was more effective and memorable in the other film he made in 1995, Heat. Scorsese would eventually regain his footing as a preeminent filmmaker, maybe Bobby D will as well.
@williamrafe1 I think Robert is total workaholic (about 40 films since CF), taking parts because he cannot slow down or so he can earn $ to finance outside projects. The crushing volume of lesser work has etched away at his stature. Other actors of his caliber (Nicholson, Newman, Hackman, Connery, Freeman) seemed to know in later years either to choose more carefully, take more time between films, or walk away before hitting bottom. I hope that he can turn this slippage around somehow.
@rottrielerfromhell WAKE THE FUCK UP brad pitt & tom sizmore ???? WTF!!!! marlon brando is the king of all hollywood brando blows everyone in ur fucken list out of the water !! Brad pitt , sizemore untalented, retarded drug addicted get the fuck out of this blog pitt & sizemore what the fuck ????
One of them was Black Bolt of Marvel Comics fame, but I'm not sure who the oter one was. I dont think that he was trying to transform himself into them, but to rather show how twisted and bizarre Max Cady is.
nah. he has 3, and they are pointed at the bottom with 3 crimps per bolt. the nazi ones are more just like two parallel crimped lines. maz cady's lightning bolts are the most badass tattoos i've ever seen
De NIro was in impeccable shape for this film! And to think the guy was pushing 50, @ the time, and had a body carved out of granite. THE GREATEST method actor ever!
Some people say Leonardo DiCaprio is the new Robert De Niro of his generation...now, I wonder if he could pull off something like Bob's inhuman transformation to Max Cady? I highly doubt it...
@Beor88 I really dont know why he (DiCaprio) gets that kind of praise, not to say he's bad, but I really haven't seen hm demonstrate anything remarkable.
@imaRoLLingStonzFan agreed stonezfan di caprio is not & never will be in the same league as bob , look @ raging bull for method acting , he even scared his co stars !!!!!!
am gonna watch raging bull later as i love it & ain't seen it for ages , de niro put 64lb on for that role !!!! now that's madness in the method !!!!! & then lost it all again.... mind bending bob.
Yes and i saw a video where someone posted Al Pacino vs Robert DeNiro i of coarse voted Robert!!I do like Al a lot but Robert has played more interesting parts in movies IMO best method actor ever
de niro is peerless , but has made a lot more films than pacino .
i'm stuck really as i can't pick one over the other ! but without doubt de niro just shades it , as a method actor . but both amaze me with their work.
@imaRoLLingStonzFan and pacino always acts the same for each character, if u pick that up. i mean, they all have the same personality almost, whereas de niro plays a different guy each time. im not saying de niro is better than pacino. they are of equal greatness to me
never was horrified by the film. it was almost inspirational. One man completely devoting himself to one goal. despite being a creep, he was one determined SOB.

Robert Deniro is the best actor with Al Pacino

Watching Cape Fear in a cinema back in 1991, I was blown away both by DeNiro's portrayal of Max Cady and his physical transformation. I researched it at length but found very little: Dan Harvey, his personal trainer, said he had never worked with someone that focused. Interesting detail: I researched pretty much all the books we see in this scene, found this: THe Cell Within is the name of an episode of Miami Vice in which a criminal's name is Jake Manning. Gotta love Scorcese for that stuff!
jacegil 1 year ago

He hasn't reached these heights again.
industrialsun 1 year ago
@industrialsun i would have to say the start of his decline was when he started taking comedy roles like paul vitti, which was still entertaining, to the cia guy from meet the parents, which was bad. basicly, de niro still held his own until the late 90s in my opinion.but yea, its bad now.u can always tell an actor is done, especially a good actor, when they start taking comedy roles, but at least de niro hasnt done any straight tom dvd movies yet, which is great. unlike jackie chan, who isnt 65
williamrafe1 1 year ago
@williamrafe1 I agree that was when his quality of films/abilty to select films declined (or plummeted). For a De Niro fan like me, it exposed what I suspected/dreaded for a few years: that he was choosing good projects that did not require that much heavy lifting for him acting-wise. After the early 90s, his films were usually good but performances were just competent and professional. Now that his films and acting are forgettable, I have to conclude his last truly exceptional work was in CF.
industrialsun 1 year ago
@industrialsun cape fear yes, but he wasnt too bad in casino either, i mean, it was a scorsese
williamrafe1 1 year ago
@williamrafe1 Casino is a good/not great film. It is something of a mixed bag. While a good-looking, well-executed film with a few moments of that De Niro/Pesci magic, it is least interesting of the 8 Scorsese/De Niro films, De Niro is actually miscast in his role, and the film just does not contain any surprises. De Niro was more effective and memorable in the other film he made in 1995, Heat. Scorsese would eventually regain his footing as a preeminent filmmaker, maybe Bobby D will as well.
industrialsun 1 year ago
@industrialsun i agree casino was a failed second attept at goodfellas, but my point is that he didnt take it out of desperation
williamrafe1 1 year ago
@williamrafe1 I think Robert is total workaholic (about 40 films since CF), taking parts because he cannot slow down or so he can earn $ to finance outside projects. The crushing volume of lesser work has etched away at his stature. Other actors of his caliber (Nicholson, Newman, Hackman, Connery, Freeman) seemed to know in later years either to choose more carefully, take more time between films, or walk away before hitting bottom. I hope that he can turn this slippage around somehow.
industrialsun 1 year ago
This role shows how devoted DeNiro is to his parts. He prolly had to work out for freaking months to get in that kinda shape.

@dkupke de niro is famous for zoning into a role. allegedly, he drove a taxi around nyc for 3 months b4 he did taxi driver

Anybody know who the comic figures were ? It's almost like he was trying to transform himself into them ?
Johnnyboy792 2 years ago
One of them was Black Bolt of Marvel Comics fame, but I'm not sure who the oter one was. I dont think that he was trying to transform himself into them, but to rather show how twisted and bizarre Max Cady is.

Those lightning bolt tattoos he has, are those the insignia for the Nazi Waffen-SS?
Wiseguy453 2 years ago 2
nah. he has 3, and they are pointed at the bottom with 3 crimps per bolt. the nazi ones are more just like two parallel crimped lines. maz cady's lightning bolts are the most badass tattoos i've ever seen

am gonna watch raging bull later as i love it & ain't seen it for ages , de niro put 64lb on for that role !!!! now that's madness in the method !!!!! & then lost it all again.... mind bending bob.
goonchistaw 1 year ago 2
@goonchistaw
Yes and i saw a video where someone posted Al Pacino vs Robert DeNiro i of coarse voted Robert!!I do like Al a lot but Robert has played more interesting parts in movies IMO best method actor ever
imaRoLLingStonzFan 1 year ago 2
@imaRoLLingStonzFan i think both are the finest actors of their generation
de niro is peerless , but has made a lot more films than pacino .
i'm stuck really as i can't pick one over the other ! but without doubt de niro just shades it , as a method actor . but both amaze me with their work.
goonchistaw 1 year ago
@imaRoLLingStonzFan and pacino always acts the same for each character, if u pick that up. i mean, they all have the same personality almost, whereas de niro plays a different guy each time. im not saying de niro is better than pacino. they are of equal greatness to me
williamrafe1 1 year ago
@williamrafe1
Yes i see what you mean I like them both too!
I like The movies DeNiro plays in more
cause he plays those interesting characters!
i don`t think it`s one movie that i don`t like that he plays in!
but yes i agree both are great!
