This video takes my breath away! I would kill for driving one of these new unimogs. Now, shame on mercedes current G series, they dony even have a manual gearbox, its all about luxury, I mean AMG? love AMG but for a SL or a C 6.3 not for a tough off roader. These days the only proper 4wd "car" is the defender, good and simple. Great video!! lucky people from germany.

True...I am a TOTAL Land Rover fan and have driven my Land Rover Series IIA offroad in all sorts of crazy Alaska conditions....but I must admit that the Unimog totally outdoes the Rover in heavy offroad conditions.

But please realize that they are for two totally different markets. The Rover is a small street-legal expedition vehicle that is just as happy going to the corner market. The Unimog is an all-out expedition vehicle....with differential gearing like a John Deer tractor!!

In terms of all-out expedition vehicles (which pretty much preclude MOST 4x4's) there is a VERY short list to chhose from:

#1= Unimog....#2= military HMMWV....#3 = Land Rover 101 Forward-Control (VERY similar to unimog in size and capability)....#4 either a Land-Rover Series IIA or a Land-Rover Defender (both ONLY if properly equipped with much larger off-road tires and differential locks for both front and back axles and tire chains)

75 series Landcruiser is ONE TOUGH PIECE OF GEAR! there is a reason they are used in the mines, instead of unimogs.

It's cheaper to run, cheaper to buy, lasts longer, has slightly less offroad ability, but most importantly, especially when you're out in the middle of nowhere, with no spare parts, is that they are TOUGH.

I love my American truck, but I'll say krauts make very good vehicles. For plowing a field or offroading, even everyday use, I'd take a Unimog. I'd not try to haul steel beams or 30 crates of 308 ammo in one, but for what it was designed for, it's the best, hands down.

The HUMVEE and the Unimog are entirely different types of vehicles guys. I'd like to see a unimog drive under some obstacles in 3rd world countries. The Hummer sits very low but still has around 14 inches of ground clearance with 37" tires. It's "compact" compared to the Unimog. Anyways, these vehicles are both impressive, but in difference classes.
