The purpose of this video was to help place these cats and to educate people on animal hoarding. I don't understand people continuing comment about the conditions not being so bad. Before making a comment, please read about the video, where I've stated that most cats seemed to be well fed and healthy, but also note the medical problems, or my comments since I originally posted this video. There were no liiter boxes until we entered the house, and what's shown here was after the first cleaning
I have to say that these cats look healthier and happier than many cats I have seen at some animal shelters. I did notice many were scratching and appeared to have fleas but other than that they had a better life in this person's home than most farm cats have or strays that have to dig in dumpsters to survive.
I don't know how many had to be euthanized, although I think only a couple or so. Didn't follow up on that. Just trying to get them out of the house and into rescue groups. Most were anemic due to severe flea infestation, had eye ulcers (a couple had to have a eye removed,) upper respiratory infections, and a variety of other ailments. Some looked pretty good, while others were very sick.
I would love to put all of the animal hoarders in the US of A in Little feces and diseased infested cages and let them die slow and painful deaths!!! Please , Can I PLEASE!!!!!
You need to read the entire message. Most of these cats probabaly did get along. That wasn't the problem. Try breathing straight from a container of ammonia. That's what they were breathing, which affected their lungs. We had to wear masks in the house and could remain in there for only short periods of time. The cats were very anemic due to severe flea infestations. They had an assortment of illnesses and some had to be euthanized. Conditions were extrememely poor.
@PamLeavy ...Ummm....then why didn't you show the severly ill ones on your video or the horrid living conditions? I watched this three times and didn't see it. BTW...I used to work at a kill free animal shelter. I saw no major neglect on this video other than a few cats scratching themselves. I did notice one cat that had a healing wound on its back...the wound looked clean and well taken care of.
I knew someone who had hoarded 15 cats, and she was my ex-sister in law. I also knew someone who I was dating a while back that had 8 cats and wanted 2 more and also had a blue heeler dog in an apartment that was an extremely crazy person. When people hoard animals, their intentions may be good, but there has to be a limit on what a person should have, and what they can afford that is good for not only themselves, and for the animals to live in a safe, clean environment.
When I see animal hoarders, I wonder if there are any rich animal hoarders who hire staffs of care people and keep the animals in a clean environment where humans and animals can coexist without the problems related to one person trying to care for all of them. Are the mental illnesses associated with animal hoarding present when the hoarder can humanely care for themselves and their animals at the same time? I guess running a humane animal shelter according to law is the closest thing to that.
These cats all look in good condition. A bit overcrowded, perhaps, but cats don't normally mind being with other cats. This isn't a case of cruelty imo; I've seen more neglected, half-starved cats in one-cat households. These are all well fed.
This one looks half way under control, no sick cats, all tops where they sleep are covered, food and water and litter boxes are there and no over flowing. all are responsive and friendly not running and hiding. It is a lot of cats but this one is just a lot of cats this is not hoarding. this is just a lot of animals. there is a crate and the dogs and cats all get along. there is no clawing or scratching. the litter boxes are under newspaper. ITs better than MOST!
Agreed, they were specifically designed and manfactured by God to live outdoors. While I keep mine indoors as Ilive in apartments I have no doubt that my cat would be able to make a living in the wild. The indoor environment is actually not natural for them, that's why we have to go through some lengths to make special accomadations for ot pets. I just have one cat though between the allergies, hairballs, and added expenses for care that's all I can handle.
ok, so what you're saing is that you'll rehome the cats, saving them. But you won't get the hoarder help so that after you take all these animals she can go out andget more, starting all over again.......hmmmm, save these cats and dogs so she can collect and endanger other cats and dogs. great idea!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT!
The cats look healthy and appear to be friendly but no animal should have to live in such conditions.
That place was awful and the person who owns them shouldn't be allowed to have pets because hoarding animals like that is a mental condition. Well if she is getting treated and someone is checking in on her on a regular bases then I guess it's ok if she has a few animals.
Oh I can't wait to have 60 cats take a dump in my house everyday. Wouldn't that be just lovely (they are so cute).
Oh but wait...I can turn them loose on my neighbors and fill their property with the waste generated by 60 cats everyday that way I don't have to deal with it.
If the neighbors speak up about it ...well then they must just be Monsters...my kitty's are so cute.
Poor things, though probably all executed by the sadly cruel (but they cant help it, they need space) put down shots. poor things just probably have nothing to do but lay around all day.
Barn cats adoption not an answer even if fixed. I think death is kinder. I also know hoarding is a mental condition and she needs treatment. Without it she will build up her collection again. A ban from animal ownership sad to say is a must! Yet thanks for trying to help the situation. I agree with your saying that well intended or not the animals suffer. I know many who feed strays. They do them no kindness in the long run.
Its very sad that here in NYC, we have MANY ways to get animals free/low cost spay/neuter.But in places where it's most needed (warmer climates), they don't have it. The animals suffer and breed.
Until I saw "Baton Rouge" I thought this might have been my next-door neighbor's house. He had an outdoor pen that held nearly fifty cats, and had a bunch more inside. The smell was sickening, and the outdoor cats attracted clouds of bugs. A bunch of neighbors started calling the health department about him, and he was ordered to get rid of the cats. Instead, he moved them (and himself) to another property of his. I feel so sorry for the poor cats, who will never escape the filth or the smell.
The sad thing is that the spca euthanizes most animals recovered from hoarding cases because they have never been socialized with humans. Alot of them have diseases as well because no one gets shots for all of their animals.
I had a neighbor that was an animal and item hoarder. He had so much stuff in the house that when something caught fire in the home, he couldn't get all of his animals out. Unfortunately, the animals that survived stayed on the property after he left. They kept reproducing. Our neighborhood is riddled with cats. I hate it.
These guys are just "hanging". There is no "comraderie" (sp?) amongst themselves. Do they go outside, if not for a bit? I suppose not as there are just too many of them. Cats as pets, are much different than dogs, they spend much time taking care of themselves...hence, you might want to clean their boxes more often, as they tend to take much pride in preening themselves. Good luck as I know that they are expensive - but you knew that, right?
Its nasty for humans, but the cats look pretty healthy and happy compared to feral cats or something. It would be sad if they were taken away from the crazy cat lady and put in a shelter, just to be killed.
This is terrible. That woman shouldn't be able to keep her house or her animals. Personally, I think the law should be changed so that you are only allowed to keep 1. (1 cat, 1 dog, etc;). Unless you're a current breeder--and then those animals need to go OUTSIDE only. This is so gross. It makes me so mad.
what about the personal preferences of the animals? you try to live in a gym with 50 people. go to your local homeless shelter and stay for 24h it will change your life
Not quite the same at all. TNR programs spay/neuter feral cats to stop reproduction and allow the cats to remain living wild. Hoarders, such as this one, spayed/neutered only some animals, while others continued reproducing; animal in confinement such as these are in poor health (some of these died;) and the living conditions extremely poor, with feces/urine everywhere, and ammonia so strong that we had to wear masks. The cats weren't healthy, some died; those saved had URI,skin/eye infections, ear mites,2 lost eyes, abscesses, fleas, worms, and had been breathing intense amonia fumes 24/7. 60 cats living in confined space without proper shelter/medical treatment is illegal.Cleaning the house wasn't an option-everything in the house was destroyed. We help people when possible. This lady obviously lacks the mental capacity to recognize sick & parasite infected pets. To leave these animals with her would be inhumane.
healthy my ass, just cause u cant see it, they must be covered in ticks and have heart worms, and the smell etc.. and the poor neighbours..why should they help her clean, stop being a nanny state..the animals were right to be removed and she needs a mental institution or a bucket and water LOL
Gas mentally ill people who are so insane that they would themselves live in a house full of feces and urine? Obviously anyone who is a hoarder or anything needs serious medical assistance. It amazes me how people have more empathy to animals than to other human beings. God help the cats? God help the person who accumulated them in the first place, his/her family and the neighbors.
The animals don't look starved or scared, but the house looks pretty dirty :( Bless all the animals. I hope they all have big gardens to play in now xx
I was thinking the same thing. The house itself is horrible, and I'm sorry the hoarder has decided to live like that rather than fine homes for some of her pets. But the cats themselves look damned good, a healthy weight, good coats, clear eyes. Bless her for trying, and bless the critters.
I'm assuming you are referring to the humans, not the innocent cats who have done no crime. In the case of most hoaders, they love animals, their original intentions were well meaning, but the situation gets out-of-hand, slowly.
This video was taken after the hoarder attempted to "clean up." And those "real healthy" cats cost thousands to cure, some did not survive. Acadiana Humane Society and Cat Ranch of Sunset, LA were able to take 9 of the cats out of this situation the day before the deadline.
