  • Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which is electronic music inspired by great games such as Chrono Trigger. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!

  • man it sounded better slowed down

  • not only one of the best rpgs of all time, this is one of the, if not THE best game of all time!!

  • This, in my honest opinion, is MUCH better than the final boss theme. This just had a much greater sense of, "ULTIMATE BAD GUY, YOU'RE F***ED" than the Lavos themes.

  • 17 is good spot as this track has meh written all over it. It's nice but overall nothing special.

  • The black wind howls

  • One of the coolest boss fights in gaming history and one of my personal childhood highlights.

    And the music... epic.

  • Chrono Trigger was revolutionary.

  • 17.. kinda rubbish

this is one of the best tracks in gaming history. but then, ive said that already on a lof of chrono trigger songs. but then again. its not easy to choose which is best, when they kinda all blow you away

gotta say that Chrono Cross and Xenogears also had amaaaaaaaazing soundtracks

  • I've loved this game since the SNES version. <3 It's amazing... and Magus is epic.

  • OMG i've heard this somewhere, but i've never played chrono trigger unfortunetly :( I'm so gonna play it, this franchise looks fucking amazing

  • @mavadoman get the DS version *if you have one* its almost exactly like the original except for the awesome bonus boss that you can fight at your second playthrough and epic weapons you can get 2 but yes get it!!! i can almost guaruntee that you will love 99.9%!

  • @holykirby95 Yes, i Have 2 DS's (DS's? Is that right? LOL) But anyway yeah, i'll get this someday when I can. Love RPGS so this will go down well.

  • God I loved this game!

  • *tightens glove*

  • Pretty epic if you bring him to fight his mother atop the Black Omen....however I do like the battle with Queen Zeal with the boss battle 2 music.

  • whats happening at the end of this is magus blasting off into space or what

  • Tightens glove

  • You should mention in the title that this is Magus' Battle theme, not the game's normal battle theme. Who here has gotten wailed on by Magus because you stopped to listen to his theme song? I sure have.

  • Thumbs up if this brings backs memories !

  • 1st mangus battle... oh yeah.... volume max and 3 replays to listen this epic music...memories comes back

  • Tut! Sir Magus!

  • he was such an asshole when i fight him crono and magus were just spaming lighting II to each other :P

  • I'm at the Magus fight and I thought Magus was just another boss you had to fight and you were done with him, I didn't realize that that was untrue until I saw screenshots from later on in the game.

Chrono Trigger has some of the most epic game music I've ever heard, without a doubt.

  • I love how you could listen to this epic theme whenever you wanted by going to the End of Time and switching a party member for him. I did that often just to hear this song.

  • ...More like number 10. There are still pieces that are just a tad better IMO. What the hell happened to The Wilderness Of Sadness?!

  • magus is one mage you don't wanna fuck with

  • Magus ftw ;']

  • This is how you do video game music, people.

  • Magus,awesome character

  • play with fire and you're gonna get burned

the weak go quickly to their graves

    ****ing bad***

  • this shouldve been number 1

  • @tenspeed234 yes yes yes, definitely

  • 0:49

    OMG! Teh epicness!!

  • @MikeBlame

i couldnt agree with you more

  • The black wind howls...

  • This theme always heavily reminds me of several of the boss themes from SaGa Frontier. Anyone else notice that?

  • A befitting song for the most bad ass boss in the game. Though the best feature is still Akira Toriyama's art.

  • Other than that; an epic cutscene comes just before you fight him, I really love how he's trying to summon Lavos and when we show up he turns around and talk about the "black wind" was it?

  • The Magus boss battle is my favorite fight in chrono trigger.

    1. Because if it's the first time you fight him, you will see him as one of the top 5 bosses in chrono trigger; he is also the one of the bosses that requires the most strategy than rather than brute force and healing...

    2. This song, nuff said

  • Chrono Trigger was the 3rd highest selling SNES game, only behind Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World.

  • When you have Magus and you go to fight Queen Zeal, the moment this song kicked on I was like O.O! NO FREAKING WAY!!!!

  • I'm working my way up the list, so I don't know for sure yet, but numbers 16 through 1 better be amazing songs, otherwise this is ranked WAY too low. Great song, and having played video games my entire life I'm never heard a battle song that did more for the game and the specific battle than this one did.

  • Sounds western at start, then gets up-tempoed.

    always loved this game.

  • really great music, love it!

  • 5th grade....i'll never forget that as the year of Chrono Trigger....this was the best theme out of the whole game....when you first meat magus, and when frog a.k.a. cyrus battles him alone atop a cliff.....thank you for posting this homie...

  • You mean Frog a.k.a Glenn, not Cyrus.

  • oops i meant glenn!....haha thanks for the correction...cyrus is glenn's friend....it's been awhile

  • NO NO NO, THIS MUST BE FIRST!

When I arrived at magus when I was young, this blew my mind! and it still does

  • HAHA good to see this one nice and high on the list. surprised i havent seen more of the good squaresoft stuff on this countdown :(

  • Truly an iconic moment and theme.

  • My favorite game theme epic epic epic.

  • PS - I understand why you're only using 2 themes per game. But the other one you chose for Chrono Trigger confuses me. Where's the Final Lavos theme?! That song was awesome.

  • I loved fighting Lavos! Best fight in the game next to fighting Magus!

  • Hut tut, Sir Magus!

  • Some video game battle themes are better music, and sound better as individual pieces of music, but very little can match Magus' Theme for setting the atmosphere of the battle.

  • Ah, yes, Magus. THIS was a long-awaited battle.

  • Magus: The black wind howls....

  • Janus: One among you...will shortly perish. >:)

  • Yes! Finally someone gets the qoutes right! =D

  • Alright give me your best shot... if you're prepared for the void!

  • Magus: Forward...

  • I, and many others would probably place this song at either at the number 1, 0 , or possibly even -1 position...

  • This should be in the top 5.....but close enough

  • This song made me fear the battle with magus, but he wasn't all that hard. His henchmen on the other hand. I hated them as a team. grrr I hate it when evil guys get smart enough to work together .....

  • I heard an awesome cover of this before but I cannot remember for the life of me who did it.

  • Plix try to remember? :D

  • I'm hooked on Chrono Trigger for the DS. It's now one of my favorite games of all time and I can experience it the way it was meant, something that was sorely missing from the PS1 version. I love how the length of the game is just right.

  • @TheWanderingMind

Yeah, it`s an awesome game.... Too bad most of it is too easy. At least the difficulty undergoes a massive change for the better for the last couple of bosses.

  • @FirestormSurtr Try playing the game without ever grinding a level or tech. Just go from one story point to the next. Its alot harder.

  • @Nonsensei436

Maybe I could do that.... by the way, which level were you when you beat the game?

  • @FirestormSurtr Its been a long time since i played the game. As i type this i actually have the original SNES cartridge in front of me. if i had an snes i guess i could check to see what level i was when i last played it...15 years ago. But back then RPG's were new to me and i loved grinding to a high level. I imagine i was above level 60 when i beat the game.

  • @Nonsensei436

I played the laggy PS1 version, and I was about level 55 or so when I beat Lavos. He is actually incredibly hard without Magus in the party....

  • I wanna play this game too.. nya

  • Whats the next game Mitsuda's going to compose music for?

  • I loved this song. It's not only well put together, but it matches Magus so well. ^^

  • This shohuldove been #1. When i was playing against Magus i put down the controller just to listen to this. its godly

  • Heard this on the PS1. Dont see why people complain so much on its load times. Ive had worst

  • people complain about the load times on the PS1 version because they are noticeably longer than the snes version.

  • Yes but calling it "atrocious" or making the PS1 version "unplayable"

  • Actually, I agree with spacebran. I prefer to play it on my emulator rather than on my playstation for precisely that reason.

  • I dont ever play on emulators. I dont believe in playing games on a laptop and keyboard. Unless I have a controller and can hook it up to a tv I think it takes away the feel of the game.

  • Yeah... but you can do both with an emulator. No need to ever have to play with a keyboard or sit in front of your monitor, you know.

  • So I've heard and tried but I lack the CPU power and the cables so I guess its somewhat my own fault but I also feel theres something Genuine in playing a game on a console like the SNES

  • I also agree. Never played the psx version of CT, but I had a hard time playing FF anthology on psx when I was so used to FF3 for snes.

It's more like after playing a faster version on an outdated platform it's hard to sit through it on a current gen console

  • ya the ps1 version stinks, even though its the same game it doesnt have the same feel and the music wants to make u pull ur ears out. btw, if u liked this game u might wanna download tales of phantasia on your emulator its up there with chrono trigger and may even exeed it.... well thats all

  • You have to put up with the load times while going to the menu screen and back, saving, and in between battles.

  • Doesnt really bug me

  • The remixes of this song begin to do this song justice, but I would have loved to hear this song in live format... fan renditions aside.

  • This is a lot better than the top five songs on the list, in my opinion. It should have a lower number DX

  • I remember being, like, 10 when I first played Chrono Trigger, and freezing up when I fought Magus and heard this AWESOME theme.

And then I got Lightning 2'd...

  • Lightning 2! Electric Boogaloo!

  • Yes, I agree with this a 100%. In fact, I believe you should have placed it on a higher position.

  • Me too. This song was like... so unbelievably ahead of its time... it was just amazing.

  • Oh yesh, One of my favorite rpgs. One of my first rpgs and it took my hours to beat this Magus.

  • I have a feeling this was beginning to push the consoles' limits on sound production.

  • The memories ;_;

  • you know this is gonna be on the ds this winter.

  • I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is not the best battle theme I've heard... however... this theme alongside with Dark King's theme (from Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest) have the best beginning. They fit perfectly into the environment and dialogue.

  • Ah.....this song brings up so many memories!

One of my favorite of the game.

It was a nice addition that they play this song if you fight Queen Zeal in the Black Omen with Magus in the party.(i won't spoil the reason if someone hasn't played it)

Heheh, the "Time Stream theme" in the end sound so eerie; hehehehehe

  • Wow...I didn't that when I first fought Queen Zeal...but that makes it all the better.
