I always want to rush on and hug richard at this point, just his horrified face makes you cring, 4:50 and 5:42...dont you just want rush on and hug him? I was also half pissed off cos I thought that Tony and Tim looked like a great couple, oh well
This movie seems a miracle of accidental excellence. The writing, lead actors, supporting actors, all giving their best. Some of them with a lifetime of experience, and some of them with none. I've seen it many times. I remember when I found out my husband at the time was cheating on me. I'd take long bus rides from Manhattan to NJ, and this movie would replay in my brain over and over.
@biboca68 I love the way Dalton's voice has matured. It got deeper as he aged, as it happens with everyone. Have you seen him in Jane Eyre 1983? It had so much command and perfect for the role of Edward Rochester. And the deepness of his voice during his James Bond days was perfect for intimidating bad guys like Robert Davi and Benecio Del Toro. At 60+ years old, his voice is still amazing: deep, a bit mournful, and perfect for roles like King Lear! Timothy, please return to the theater!
For the record Christopher Walken played Phillip in the original stage play. I would have paid good money to see that performance. The face of a fallen angel, a mix of winsome charmer and stone cold menace.
This scene was great fun! Timothy Dalton's debut is wonderful! He's very self assured and confident and it really shows in this strong performance! Thanks for posting!
Hepburn and O'Toole (brilliantly assisted by the supporting cast) deliver an absolute acting masterclass in this film. How O'Toole never won an Oscar for this escapes all reasoning.
First class acting! What an impressive debut! "I find you beautiful" and "never!" - he delivers those lines so masterfully and intense you might think he'd been in the business for years at that time!
Tour de force- for such a young actor to turn in a performance like this, shows he has a capacity that's never been fully appreciated. I saw him on stage in The Young Vic doing 'Touch of the Poet' and found he's actually better on stage than on screen- and that's an understatement
Timothy dalton has never been appreciated enough!!he owns every movie he does he is so commanding! the way he acts in this movie is soo good im not a fan of the movie i only watch it for timmy the only good scenes in the movie is where u see him and u just dont see him enough.
Yes! and oh that little smile around tim's eyes when he responds to Henry's question about what kind of courage he has and tim responds "the tidal kind...it comes and goes." Awesome! Love this scene!
What an amazing film, great performances throughout, but 22 yo Dalton is astonishing. Oscar worthy film debut. The way his lips curl at the end: "Never" - chilling.

First time I saw him was on PBS playing Heathcliffe in a n English produced version of Wuthering Heights. Fantastic. Too bad he was never really appreciated as he should have been. Dazzling actor.
Actually, his career never really recovered from the fact that he turned down many movie roles in the early '70s to concentrate on stage work. Playing Bond was sort of an anomaly in his career. He just went back to doing the same stage and TV stuff he did before he played Bond.
His talent has shown brillantly in "weighty" roles which were most often found in stage work. I'm trying to think which movies in the 70's and 80's he could have done which would do his talent justice. His choices of roles in TV mini-series (other than Jane Eyre of course!) seem odd but he has always performed brillantly regardless. One cannot argue that his career has been most prolific and I think in the end you get the sense he made his choices and he is well satisfied with them.
Tim is wonderful in any role he plays. It's sad that he doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton: two notable debuts in this landmark film.
Two kings eke it out in this scene: veteran
and canny junior.

Timothy Dalton was just absolutely wondeful in this role. For someone so young and his first film, its utterly amazing his performance.

Dalton was 21, playing a 17 year old determined to hold his own with Henry and his brood.
