And I read that a stiff rod and non-elastic line was the recommendation for deepsea fishing for cod in the mid 1990s, because the cod will often bite very lightly, like nibbling, and monofil. line, so elastic line, and a rod that's not stiff will lose a lot of the bite signal, causing people to easily not notice when a cod in over 200ft of depth of water nibbles on bait. I often used only clams for bait, rather than jigs, so the cod often will bite very lightly then.
What are the advantages of using braided line as opposed to monofil. and other types of line ?
I think the answer will include that braided line is not elastic, while monofil. is. That's if the line I had bought in 1998 for fishing walleye with small jigs in deeper water and near the bottom is braided line. For these cases, I read that a stiff rod and non-elastic line was the recommendation, because the waleye can bite very lightly and elastic line will lose a lot of signal.
I use a baitcaster with braid, and never have I ever used mono to start. I will however use the foam pad to start for ease of starting the line to wrap around the spool. As for leaders with mono, or fluoro, I never use them, just straight braid. I do top water over heavy weed cover, so no leader required in my opinion. Green weeds, and green line, can't go wrong. I use a rod with mono for topwater around docks and clear water.
@flatliner35 Thanks for writing in and sharing your techniques with us.
We have found that by adding a leader of fluorocarbon or mono to our braid, that we get more hits as this is typically less visible to the fish. Hope you are having a great summer on the water and thanks for taking time to write to us and for tuning in to our videos. Until next time, good luck and good fishing!
poor kid is like "get me the fuck outta here" haha nice video though. would have been better indoors, may have been better to see what you were doing (the viewers), but nonetheless, nice fuckin' vid!! time to spool my mono & braid
@XBLSmackithTheDown You will find that if you use a uni knot to joint the line, that the knot will not break on you. If you do not want to put some mono on as a backing, you can put an elastic on your spool or some tape. As for adding some Fluorocarbon line to your braid as a leader, it is not long enough to take away from the sensitivity of the braid and it will catch you more fish as they will not see it.
@remelsheikh You can use any lb test mono that you want - it will not make a difference, in fact, you may want to use lighter mono so you have more room in your spool for your braid.
@remelsheikh This could vary depending on what you are fishing for, but a 30 lb fluorocarbon leader would be a great start. If you need to go higher, you certainly can.
Thanks for the clarification and we hope you have a great time on the water :)
@remelsheikh any, as long as you have enough braid so that mono will never see daylight, just make sure to have an even layer or two of it on the spool to prevent slipping
and also, i noticed that i havnt been catching anything lol, even tho my fishing buddy is reeling in the pike on his mono setup... is is ABSOLUTELY necessary to used mono leader? im in somewhat merke water .. what lb test is best when using 30 lbs braid? and will a uni knot get stuck in my guide on my reel?i have some 17 lb sufix lying around, that any good?..thnks a lot
@cb7pwn It is alwyas best to use a mono or fluorocarbon leader, if using braid - even if the water is murky, the fish may see your braid, so why take a chance.
You can use a uni knot to tie your braid to your leader line and 10 lb test should be sufficient. As a general rule, make your leader line about twice the length of you rod , so the knot will be exposed and not buried in your spool. It will cast through your eyes - just make sure you trim the tag ends. Thanks & good fishing!
this is my first year using braid, and i started with 10 lb Sufix performance braid (reading all the + reviews)... my god, WHAT TRASH! it snapped on me many times mid line while casting which resulted in lost lures (and they aint cheap!) . lol, i moved to my backup rod which i had loaded with 10 lb power pro and had NO problems . now, i ripped off the Sufix and bought some 30 lb Power pro for my main rod (need the thicker diameter for the stuff i fish through)be careful when using braid!!
Power pro is the nicest braid ive found so far ive tried stren braid and that was disaster and fireline ive used/use and its nice and its good line but power pro is stong and its smooth and ive never had a problem with it
@rocrfella Glad you didn't have a problem, but you most certainly could and we really suggest putting a backing on your spool.......once your spool of braid gets all wet, at that point, it will slip.
Thanks for writing in and sharing you experience with us and we hope you never experience the line "slip" .
@edrandall2 The Uni-knot is similar to the full blood knot, but the uni knot is much more streamlined and less bulky, so it is thus a preferred knot to use when tying 2 line together.
Thanks for writing in - nice to hear fomr you in England and good lcuk on the water!
@MrNuggy420 When using a backing to you braid, it does not have to be of the same lb. test - you can use any lb. test you want....the key is that there must be some sort of backing on your spool.
If you want to save some room on your spool, use the lightest line you have.
Thanks for writing in and until next time, good luck and good fishing.
i got a mitchell 300 xe reel and was wondering what weight mono i should use before putting on my 10lbs braided line..and i dont really get the point you made about why its necassary to put mono under the braid either..thanks!
@cb7pwn You can use any lb mono as a backing to your braid, but suggest you keep it under 10 lb test, so it is less "bulky". If you were to spool up with braid with out putting on some mono first, it would "slip" on you. Once the line gets wet, and you go to set the hook, your line will just slip as if you had your drag on the loosest setting. The mono backing allows the braid to "grip" and not slip. It's important.
@joel5673ify The fluorocarbon leader is great to use on the end of your braided line. In this case though, you still run the risk of "slippage" - once your braided line gets all wet, if there is no backing, it will slip on you. A backing of some sort is always recommended with braided line.
@nkazahaya You can actaully use any pound test backing you want, as they will all work, however, as a general rule, you should use the same pound test or lighter. This will take up less room on your spool, ans also allow for your line to spool on more uniformly.
Thanks for taking time to write to us and good luck on the water!
Thanks for this video, I didn't know how to fix this problem, as I bought some multifilament yesterday and I didn't use any backing, and I noticed the line being dragged out like you described. Now I know how to fix that.
About the lead however, you say twice the length of my fishing rod? Well I have a 10 foot rod, and I mostly fish on depths of 15-30 foot, and the occasional 150ft trip as well, though that is rarer. My point is, wouldn't 20 foot be quite the overkill at 15ft depths?
@Lleanlleawrg In this case, yes, a 20' leader would certainly be overkill. We like to use twice the length of your rod as a general rule, but in your case, 10' leader would be sufficient.
We like to have a longer leader as the fish can easily see the braided line.
Sounds like you are now ready to get into some great fall fishing ,so until next time, good luck on the water!
Hi i was fishing and i lost something that is most likely a drag or spool washer is there any place i can get these ? The washer was right under the reel. I can not reel any more so i cant fish, The model is mak 55a and the company is calypso thank u!
@Gamementors In this case, you may be better off to go to your local tackle shop and ask them when they send their reels for repairs - that same company may have parts for you.
We hope you are able to find your missing part - thasnk for writing in & good luck on the water.
@thundermistlures ok thanks for replying but i figured out that it is i think called reel sitter or something. it keeps the reel in place everything is fine u just have to hold up the reel to wind the spool. im going to the store soon to see if i can get the part. hope fully im going to fish this weekend
i wonder how much he payed that kid to stand there

@mikecorbeil You are correct - braided line has no stretch and therefore allows for an instant hook set and is extra sensitive as well.
