@suzerain01 a good friend of mine is an expert on 15th cen. armor. Particularly scottish. He has worked with some of the top armorers in the world. He builds Scottish suits of battle armor and there are also books and such about the different armors. I would like to say I have enjoyed this discussion very much so I respect your knowledge on this topic.
T%he leather "armour" as shown is ridiculous, all it would do is to hamper movement. Real leather armour was extremely thick, boiled and shaped to fit the torso,no one in their right mind would put on a piece of leather which was hardly fit for making a ladies belt.
He blocked that sword edge on edge? Is he insane or just stupid? Blocking edge on edge is a sure-fire way the cause serious damage to both blades. Sorry, but the Hollywood BS doesn't fly, bro. Also, plate armor was very expensive. One wasn't like to find very many knights in full plate armor. A typical swordsman had mail, leather, and a helm at the most.
@mojothemigo some battle armor was actually heavier than jousting armor. It really all depends on what metal you are using and what country you are from. @allfunbutnogames Full body plate armour knights didn't appear until the 15 the century. Those knights didn't exist throughout of the Middle Ages...before that knights wore mostly chain mail with some plate mail.
"Scotland for example most of their battle armor was quite hefty" - do you have a source for this? AFIK, theres a grand total of 3 peices of medieval armour that survive from scotland; 2 15th C brigandine plates, and the skull of a bascinet. All are quite average. There is, to the best of my knowledge, no other scots-originating armour known. Which rather leaves me questioning where this claim is sourced from...
@mojothemigo, in this video it was not stated that this is jousting armour (if it was he would not be wearing spalders he would have a set of jousting pouldrons) it must have been the plume that gave you the idea that it was jousting amour. Once again he is also is missing key pieces for jousting armour.
@allfunbutnogames I meant the 100 pound armor you were speaking of was jousting armor. The armor in the vid was far closer to fighting armor. Fighting armor is supposed to be light enough so they could still fight, like they did in this vid.
Honestly, I highly disagree with this. Knights were useless on foot. That armour is so heavy, that a horse is needed in order to be mobile. On foot, it's just a man in steel, unable to move quickly.
@lolpranksta These videos have a TON of innacuracy, but I think you are wrong as well. It did weigh a good amount, but similar weight as what troops have now, about 70 or so pounds dispersed around the boddy. They could move quite well. I have read numerouse articles and watched people in traditionaly accurate spec armor. They had to have endurance and deal with heat and soggy ground, but other wise they could move and could be quite fast.
@mojothemigo The corpses of knights have found that their physique was similiar to modern olympic athletes. A English knight killed in a tournament in scotland unearthed this year is a good example. these guys trained with weighted arms and armor so they moved very well in their standard 55lb suit. they actually fought much better on foot really, hardening the front line and giving courage to peasant troops. id want to have one fighting in front of me too if i was a spearman
@lolpranksta knightly combat armor weighed only 35-55 lbs actually less than some suits of samurai armor. look at lowland scots and german knights they fought more on foot than on horse! /watch?v=H6IL2giKNN8
/watch?v=xm11yAXeegg shows you can move around and fight just fine in knight armor while not having to worry about dodging every sword blow.
Wrong, a full suit of medieval armor weighed 100-120 pounds. As you can see this knight in the video was missing key armor pieces, and it's doubted he'd stand there and let you hit him either.
@ThorvikHaroldsson since you're so knowledgeable on the subject, i'm sure you know they are called "Guten Tag's" Meaning Good Day (or similar) in german.
@Fudelan Well, I am very knowledgeable on the subject since I live 1 mile away from where the battle of the golden spurs took place... I studied history and my uncle is a well known history writer about Kortrijk. First of all, the weapon is called a "Goedendag" which indeed meens good day but in flemisch (Flanders is the region where the battle took place) if you want to see the real deal, go to wikipedia and type in: Goedendag (yes even for the people who speak English)
@ThorvikHaroldsson I see that they are named differently in different languages. Just like most other things are. I've always read/heard about them being german in origin not flemish, but i could be wrong on that.
@wheresyourchild Most of the arrows at Agincourt didn't penetrate armor. They killed the charging french horses which were mostly unarmored. In the exceptionally muddy field they charged across, the knights were mostly tampled by their own troops. Many pieces of armor salvaged from the battlefield had small dents in it from the arrows. Longbows only penetrate Plate at very close range.
@Fudelan you're right about that but the trajectory the arrows fell from the sky also wouuld have hit the top of the french troops helmets and visors which were not thick armour and also there collar's which wouldnt have been covered by the plate armour only chainmail which would have proved fatal :)
@TheFrostedLlama For security/safety purposes almost all blades of any type on televised shows have dull and or flat blade edges. It provides that nice iconic sword ching/clang sound and doesn't damage the prop.
@minibikerider1 the heavyest long bow found is only estimated at around 180. It would bounce if shot from afar. Only with in about 20 feet would in penatrate.
Those weapons aren't weird i mean the first is a flail next is a falchion and the crow's beak is a war pick and the person that beat the knights head was using a morningstar
did anyone else notice how he lost hid shild at1:20? and also why did they use a windless? jsut use goat..something or other to wind th crossbow:L its all a bit dodgy. but till enjoyed it. and love the suit at the begining
People can't do things that they arent trained for. Find out some worker (builder) and give him a his hammer or that sword, it will be much difficult. If you were in Army and your helmet was hit by a rifle ramrod than you can imagine the effect of been hit by this sword even with armour.
The other thing is that this bow is a sh*t as most western european. Another thing that you can do is to clim a tree and shoot from there. Or call someone some sword fencing.
That guy obviously doens't know what he's doing in the armor. Other knights were much more elegent.
Hand guns of that time were actually very accurate at close range. And the crossbow actually took half a minute to reload. all these things were proven on the show Deadliest Warrior.
This has nothing to do with European Swordsmanship. First , study Historical Fencing before creating such a stupid TV-show that has nothing to do with the real thing.
Again a show that shows false facts about medieval times.
@Kelvarra I don't claim to be an expert, but I don't like it when people talk or show nonsense and declare false facts.
It's like saying: Oh look, they used an AK-47 in WW1 while referring to a Winchester. And they did not shoot normal bullets with it, but used it as a grenade launcher...
That's exactly whats happening in those so called "shows"
And what has this to do with the title of the episode? Weird weapons existed, so why can't he at least use them the way they have been meant to??
@Crossbowman Conquest is rather terrible. Especially the way they fight, it's almost comical, medieval knights were fast, precise, anything you'd expect from an athletic warrior, not those hulking pieces of metal that tried to bash each other... bah. As for your comment, running in plate armor is easy, turning is somewhat hindered, but not by much. Loading a crossbow, on the full speed run? How exactly? A powerful crossbow needs to be drawn with a lever, windlass or at least with the feet.
@Ranziel1 That must be because the participants in Conquest weren't expected to actually kill the other participants.
I'm sorry for not sounding clear enough. What I meant was: Run away until there is a good distance between you and the knight. Stop. Load the crossbow. Shoot. Even if the knight isn't hindered in speed, he certainly will get tired faster.
@PompeusMagnus hes not talking about modern hand guns hes saying medieval hand guns. these weapons were incredibly crude just a metal tube with gunpowder inside lit with a slow burning fuse...there is a huge probability the gun will miss or even misfire and not shoot at all. hes just saying if she were to shoot one...on that shot she missed which would be likely anyway.
I would say push him over and stick a sharp thin dagger or sword in a weak spot. And remember the star wars scene where they use the rope against the walkers? This guy is also slow, you can just run away and load your crossbow anyways.
1:40...........the knight has no shield or dirk. hes doomed!! and his vision is restricted! two men could easily distract and beat him with broadswords, good hard shields and dirks!
ya its really not that bad of a series its just been dumbed down a bit to make sense to the people who are just watching this as entertainment and not to learn something.
oh my god this show sucks in soooo many ways. this is sooooo unaccurate and just wrong. using weapons on armour which are separated by several hundred years. oh my god! waaaah I can't beleive they actually show this in tv!
@JulesWiiind not only that this guy RIGHT off the bat (and this impressed me)says that the longbow wasnt a superweapon that punctured through plate like it was cloth and notes that it takes a really good bow and a close range shot to get a plate armoured knight.
bow training was enforced by law, it was compulsory in England . Thus, men developed a muscular constitution that allowed to draw very heavy strung arches that you and I would not be able to use; on the other hand, arrows are relatively heavy proyectiles.
