So they may look like children and teenagers now, but when they were living on Earth they could have been full-grown adults. Why they are reincarnated as children is never said, though I have my own theory. In the show it is said that "Even if a Haibane encounters someone from their previous life, they would not recognize you." What makes a Sin-bound Haibane different I think has to do with the 'circle of sin' mentioned near the end of the series.
In an interview with the creator of this series, Yoshitoshi ABe said that the city of Glie was an intermittent world, a place where people who died went before going on to the afterlife. He also said that all of the people born as Haibane had committed suicide in their previous life, even the children. The explanation (which is said in the series too) is that the bodies of the Haibane are different then the ones they had on Earth.
So hard to find a great series like this nowadays. Sadly, not much people know of this beautiful thought provoking series. I'm open to any suggestion if anyone knows of any animes similar to this to watch :D
Love this series. The only other recent series I would recommend is Puella Magi Madoka Magical, if you haven't seen it. Its very different, but chaotic, thought provoking, and done really well. Don't let the first episode fool you, it isn't what you think it will be.
I've seen this anime 4 years ago and wow, I didn't remember how it was so excellent! This opening gives me goosebumps! Awesome! Will not forget about it soon. :)
re child suicides: The children, the "young feathers", seem to arrive and depart differently than the older characters. We know this because they apparently come and go more frequently, and do not age and have a day of flight.
My guess is that they're children who died too early to have fully formed characters. The walled city of Glie gives them a chance to stabilize before moving on to...wherever.
All speculation. The children are there because they're cute, and are not explained very well.
And yes, HR, is my favorite anime, period. One of the most beautiful stories I know.
No other anime is anything like this. It almost isn't really anime. I mean, come on! No giant robots, no panty shots, no primary colored hair. Final proof positive: Reki has oriental eyes.
Yeah, animated in Japan, so by definition it's an anime. The classification as an anime really has nothing to do with giant robots or panty shots. You should broaden your horizon.
@doesnotexistyet11: "by definition it's an anime. ...broaden your horizon."
*sigh*
Many people reject this incredible piece of art because, hey, no panty shots or giant robots. Some don't watch it at all after seeing other anime. Others are disappointed in other anime after seeing this first.
@50srefugee I just got the impression that you see anime as only about pantyshots and mechas, and therefore were surprised by HR.
For me this means you didnt delve into the medium very deeply. HR is one of many animes that doesnt care about clichés (except being an all girls cast)
I loved the show and I love the medium anime exactly because it has a multitude of shows like HR that defy categorization and the clichéd fanservice pantyshots and character archetypes of the newer mainstream anime
@50srefugee To summarize: 1. I didnt want to bash you, but broaden your horizon by showing that Haibane Renmei is not that much of an exception 2. The term "anime" is still defined solely by "being animated in Japan" - you were just referring to shallow people with no taste
Try Mushishi, Master Keaton, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Kino no Tabi, Planetes, Monster, Tatami Galaxy, Kaiba, Kaiji, Princess Tutu, Mononoke, Gallery Fake, Saraiya Goyou, Kimi ni Todoke
@50srefugee The yt limitation of letters used in the comments is really getting to me.
Anyway, just don't feel offended by my comment, my goal is to enlighten not to confront. I just want as many people as possible to realize what vast variety the medium anime has to offer and everytime someone defines anime by pantyshots and robots I have to say something.
Check out my recs if you're interested (all non generic, but not necessarily similar to HR) and have a good time :)

A masterpiece? Hardly.
This anime was all fluff, no feathers. The story was indistinct and ill conceived. The world was simply there for window dressing, with the setting self-admittedly (by the creator) remaining largely undetermined. Moreover, a bunch of time was wasted with virtually nothing happening, such that the story ground to a halt. That it was already threadbare made this all the more unbearable.
Just wait 10-15 years and try to watch it again kid. I don't think, that you really deeply recognize the content, or my you just believed, that you did it.
*SPOILERS* Don't read if you haven't seen the whole thing
I love how the series hints that this is the 2nd life of the haibane. It never comes out and tells you one way or the other, you have to figure it out for yourself. And the ending, when it hints that Reki had killed herself was masterfully done.
biggest issue i have with this is they incoperate short skirts from like inuyasha it really doesnt suit this anime. Are they really gonna let all the townsfolk look up the haibanes skirts because a gust of wind could do some serious damage seriously.
Don't know about 'greatest' anime, as there were some issues, as in all anime. But it was very enjoyable none the less. Kickass song too, with good bass, that second part when it comes in sounds pretty epic.
@ruekurei88 Well i think the only things that can compare with this are Akira and Studio ghibli movies (Spirited away, Nausicaa, Castle in the sky) But i truly think that Haibane is the single greatest film of any kind ever made.
also here wonderful manga - Haibane of the Old Home... This name is very strange rare and... umm... so kindness... i can't find the words to describe my feelings
I saw this yesterday, and yes, it's a masterpiece. I'm wondering will I ever see anything as good as this again. Kind of empty feeling, if indeed I've now seen the best and everything I'll watch in the future will always be inferior... But hey, there are lot of shows out there, surely some of them have to be at least equal if not better, right? Right?
Boy, can I relate to that--I have the exact same feelings, trying to find something, not necessarily anime, like Haibane. There is a book called Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin, which I would describe as a cross between Haibane Renmei and the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It's the closest thing I've found so far. Meanwhile, I've been imagining my own sequel series in which Rakka sees all the other Haibane take their flights and discovers more about Glie.
I adore how simple this is..yet, I would recognize it anywhere.
It's a shame that Haibane Renmei is so unrecognized, but sometimes I feel like a nice unknown little show is way better than one that's been torn apart by fans <3
@Lythya I agree, although I would not put Serial Experiments Lain on a level that can even be compared to Haibane. I enjoyed Haibane Renmei SO much more than Lain.
That first image in the video, it looks like water. It gives the impression of falling inside a water filled well doesn't it?
The intermediate-place idea makes sense. Those who die before their time has come or kill themselves "reborn" in that walled city, Glie, deprived of memories of their past, until they reach a state of understanding and fulfillment and that's when they are ready to depart. Maybe they reincarnate, since they kind of do so in Glie.

um rokka who is the main char seems awefully young to have a baby but i suppose that can happen makes sense then and the little ones I think they died before their time as did all of them although i think the sinboud ones are the suicide ones the others like Kana who was floating in a river drowned idk about hikari some say skin cancer i say fire, Nemu died in a coma i think, Rekki hit by a train suicide, ku idk what her was maybe sufficated or choked since floating in air?
@kasanagi47 Since this is not a true story, Nothing happened that wasn't in the show. Its good to be talking about this because its the best anime ever... But i dont think how they died is important.
cette animé est exelent on avance petit a petit dans le scénario (peut etre un peut trop lentement) mais il juste trop bien c inesplicable et cette oppening est a la hauteur de l'animé
Something that's easy to miss is that first image, which is us looking back through the other end of the tunnel of light in the darkness allegedly seen just before one dies. Reki, the girl falling to the ground below, had just committed suicide after becoming pregnant with a baby who is later represented as a dead crow at the bottom of a dark well later in the series. Haibane Renmei, the story implies, is an intermediate destination of those who kill themselves.
I've never heard/read the thing about the baby/crow, but I have read the thing about the Haibane are dead. Though it makes more sense, I think, that only the Sin-bound Haibane killed themselves, the rest were people who died by accident or murder. I mean, some Haibane are children - you can't expect all of the Haibane to have been suicides.
@NarutoGeek6093 maybe not all were suicides mabye just a mix of natural and unatural deaths and the dreams they have are what they remember of the last thing they saw when they were alive like Reki maybe she died on a gravel and the little stones are the last things she remembers seeing
@wadoichimoji Well, if you recall, Reki's "true" name was "One who is torn asunder", and she does end up remembering that she walked purposely out in front of a train (the pebbles were on the train tracks, and there was a light and a very distinct train-like noise). As I said, not all of them had to be suicides, as some were children, but it makes for an interesting backstory on the Haibane.
@NarutoGeek6093 holy shit i've never heard of that and have known the series for like three years. that just totally axplained EVERYTHING to me! thanks! but it also raped my mind hahahaha xD

I just adore the anime! It's the only one of its kind! It's good to see it, when you're tried of all these shinning eyes, pink hair and irritating cute facies. I watched it quite long ago but I love its mood. I just can't remember names of these girls from library and the church tower. And was Ku a girl?
I don't know why, but this opening makes me cry every time I hear it...perhaps it's because of all the times I cried during this anime. Not that it was sad, it was just so beautiful, and made me think about so many things...
I can't decide whether this op or Bokurano's is better...and Uninstall is my favorite song :')
This show is a really great one, even if it could have been lot better with a real storyline instead of improvisation. The last episode is definitely one of the best ending episode I've ever seen !
@LTVCorp It's because he wrote it based on his dreams. Dreams don't always have a fixed plot. Neither does life! It's slow-paced and lets you take in the setting and the feelings in stride.

yeah this needs another re-release, it's hard to find the dvd's. I only have the first volume right now, and it cost an arm and a leg :( .

An utterly exquisite series.

I just adore the anime! It's the only one of its kind! It's good to see it, when you're tried of all these shinning eyes, pink hair and irritating cute facies. I watched it quite long ago but I love its mood. I just can't remember names of these girls from library and the church tower. And was Ku a girl?

Hard to believe but yes, Kuu was a girl

I think they should have made at least one or two of the main Haibane boys, it would have diversified the cast a bit. Still love the series though.
CinnabonChan 2 years ago
Yeah, it would have been nice to make Kuu and Kana boys, but very high and rare quality series nonetheless

I did like the ending, but I almost cried T_T I had to hold back the tears. :3

This theme is beautiful! Just as impressive as the anime. ^^

Truly a masterpiece. It is a very unrecognized anime and it deserves a hell of a lot more recognition for its incredible story.
