Something that is rarely mentioned - Joe Cortez did an absolutely A+ job in breaking the fighters up and keeping the action flowing in that legendary round 10. What a brilliant piece of refereeing.
great fiht but was it only me dat saw holyfield try cheat and headbutt bowe in the 11th at 6:37.... smh exactly what he did to tyson and so many others... he a reat but y did man have to have dat cheating mentality smh
@JTANKDAMVP Yeah, because Tyson would never do something like headbutt an opponent, or elbow the shit out of an opponent, or yank the hell out of their arm trying to break it. I bet you think that Tyson had a right to chew Holyfield's ear after being headbutted aswel. He was starting to get his ass beat by a superior fighter AGAIN, so he took the easy way out like bullies do and at the same time keeping his precious "madman of boxing" image. Dont give me that "in his prime" shit either.
Round 10 was possibly the best round of boxing I have ever seen. It gets round of the century in my Ring Magazine, which is a total political rag by the way. Still, this was an amazing round.
@elheadkickio Are you kidding? Cortez was one of the main reasons this was such an amazing fight. Of course he's since declined as a ref but on this night he was on top of his game in the same way the fighters were. He even leaned over the ring to break up the ringside Bowe-Lennox Lewis confrontation afterwards.
@mattan147 Unfortunately, I think this is the last great heavyweight title fight I can remember, where so much determination and athleticism were on display.
We should give credit to the 3rd guy in the ring - Joe Cortez did a great job breaking the fighters apart in the 10th round. He played his part in creating one of the greatest rounds in heavyweight boxing history.
Round 10 was 10-8 for Bowe in the first minute, but Holyfield pulled it back. You'd probably still have to give Bowe the round 10-9, but surely nobody would begrudge a 10-10 scoreline in one of the best heavyweight rounds of all time.
I had to watch round 10 again; one of the best rounds I've seen. I was never a big Holyfield fan, but he kept on his toes and kept moving forward. MAD respect.
Steroid freak holyfield ddn't beat anyone of significance. He beat Douglas,so what, douglas was a Class b fghter, bowe was overrated, blubber foreman was nothing, tyson was 8 yrs past his best ability and Lewis beat him.Holyfield was an overrated steroid user.Without the enhancements,ALL BETS ARE OFF!
Plus the steroids influenced holyfieds surges as a fighter but he comes down so much also which are signs of steroid use.Other obvious steroid symptoms is a bad heart.
I can't imagine anyone who has ever been in the ring or gotten hit before referring to one of these guys as a pussy, or criticizing him for holding. Thats what you do when you have been stunned. One of the greatest rounds in heavyweight history, one that few men would have survived.
I think they are both great warriors It's very difficult for everyone throwing so much powerful punches at the time of 10° round and stay on his feet.
this was an amazing fight, the way holy stood up to someone so much bigger and took his best shots and came back was amazing. what these tyson fans don't get is simply this. Bowe was just as bigger puncher as tyson was, if not bigger due to the weight behind him. the way holy took his biggest shots in rnd 10 and came back is the reason he would always have beaten tyson. tysons heart would have gone as soon as he didn't hit the deck. just like it went when he realised holy actually wanted him!!!!
C'mon. Holyfield couldn't knock out a 43-year old Larry Holmes. He would've had trouble with a more prime Tyson, who essentially hadn't fought in 4 years.
Maybe. But Holmes couldn't "survive" against Tyson and he was only 38 then. That Holyfield couldn't knock out a 43-year old Holmes is not a destament to Holmes' survival skills so much as to Holyfield's lack of punching power.
This is unusual, because I'm not aware that I'm any big Holmes fan, but I have to object again. He hadn't fought for 2 or 3 years before the Tyson fight, and I'm pretty sure he just did it because they dangled a big check in front of him. The Holmes who beat Ray Mercer might have survived against Tyson.
As for Tyson, I think that, in his prime, he was on his way to being a great fighter. But after his trainer died, he didn't move as well or set up his power shots intelligently anymore.
Also, prime Evander only got knocked out the one time, and that was the Bowe fight where there was clearly something wrong with him. So I lean toward thinking he would've survived a prime Tyson. And given that, he definitely would've outworked him as the fight wore on.
That Mike Tyson combo by Bowe (hook to the body, uppercut to the head) is devastating. had that been by THE prime iron Mike Tyson, Holyfield would've been on the canvass. 0:27
Great fight...but the posts on here saying "Holyfield won the 10th" leave me speechless. Holyfield comeback in the second half of that round was amazing, but he did nowhere near the damage to Bowe that Bowe inflicted on him in the first half. Holyfield was OUT ON HIS FEET for a good 5-10 seconds...his best shots stopped Bowe in his tracks, but he was never close to going down. Bowe won the round, and the fight. No 230lbs+ heavyweight has ever boxed better than Bowe did that night...him included.
For a non-title fight, perhaps...but Cortez was absolutely to correct to let Holyfield continue, as he was the defending champion, and had a track-record of rebounding from heavy punishment. Referees should never be in a hurry to wave out a champion, especially not one as tough and courageous as Holyfield.
@garethac81 I was not calling Holyfield anything else but...........Lewis-Mccall stoppage maybe a good example of how a title fight can be stopped....
Lewis-McCall was a terrible piece of refereeing. Premature stoppage, the champion was given zero opportunity to recover...if Lewis-McCall is a good example of anything, it's a good example of how NOT to referee a title fight!
Spot on JABJAB, i think Riddick Bowe had the talent to go down as one of the greats, but pissed it all away, or should i say he ate it all away!! A great fight between an all-time great (Evander), and a guy that should have been an all-time great (Riddick). Pity you dont get heavyweight title fights like this anymore, a CLASSIC!!!!
BOWE , THIS guys a waste of talent and all the tools he had, he lacked heart and discipline when he was at his prime... he showed the heart when he lost all his sharpness and stamina against mr gallata... wat a waste of talent he was....
I dont know, when I see this, looming over my shoulder is that fact that not to long ago evander got caught with steriods, and in the Michael moore fight he also was caught with symptoms relating to steroids use, I dont know man looks like evander might of been using them his whole career, i cant help but think it after he was caught...
I'd say Holyfield, but not by much. He dominated the round just a bit more than Bowe, but his punches were more precise than Bowe's previous flurries.
If you were a judge that night, you could argue that Holyfield won that round cuz he closed it out with Bowe in trouble. I do however, give a very slight edge to Bowe cuz he dominated most of the round. But.... for your reasons, yes, Holyfield's punches were shorter and cleaner.

There was something seriously wrong with Holyfield. A human would have been knocked out cold by about 1:10.
Actually, I think he WAS knocked out, but his body just kept standing and throwing punches.
