My favorite version of ROB...first heard it in 1972, when I was 10 years old. Was listening to the local AM rock station, as it was playing the crazy stuff they used to play at midnight. I heard Beethoven's Fifth and then, when the guitar riff came out, it sent a charge through me (was used to Jackson Brothers and The Osmonds). Became a rock fan that night.
I was DJ at a party one time and everyone was going crazy on the floor, And then I played this. I started getting some strange looks, and then that lead gat kicked in. One of the best versions of this there is IMOP.
My dad hates rock and thinks this song is a kind of sacrilege besmirching and mocking the great composer's name. Now I actually like Beethoven as much as my dad but love this song. It's not either/or! I actually think ELO are paying the man respect here. But then my dad thinks rock corrupts youth anyway and will lead to the breakdown of western civilisation.
@zxychesatz349 It will....but so does country music and broadway musicals, In actuality, Beethoven, Mozart, et. al., were the rock stars of their day, and alot of clergy of their day thought their music was harmful to the youth.
First time i heard this today on the Radio and was very impressed. Never knew about this version and i really liked it. I actually thought it was new at first. Sounded great
I heard ELO in east Detroit about 1982; Harpos? I had a lot of things going on, girlfriend stuff. They started playing and I was slayed. Just blown off of my feet the whole show. For about 90 minutes I stood there with my mouth open... no girlfriend stuff. Yeah!
The intresting thing about this piece is if you look at what Roy Wood did after leaving ELO, this is actually closer to his vision of the band than Lynne's
i've always liked how this song starts out slow and builds until they kick the door right the fuck in!! Jeff Lynne owns - period dot end of press conference thanks for coming
I wonder if the artists in the strings section liked recording the 45 seconds or so starting at 3:09 as much as I've liked listening to it over the years?
I was driving from California back to the east Coast years ago. I hit Indianapolis at about 2 in the morning, and this song came on the radio. I got up to about 90 mph - in an OPEL! - without even noticing! What a great tune.
@smokiebird06 Because they have to put bands like devo in there with their one song. They were suppossedly "progressive". And this isn't? Would there be a trans siberian orchastra without E.L.O?Who makes the decisions needs help. (you tube user's mom)
Take one of the greatest composers who ever lived, add one of the greatest musical groups that ever performed, and what do you get? A FREAKIN' AWESOME SONG! ELO 4EVAH!
My all time favorite Rock and Roll song...this version. Congrats to ELO for the hard work spent creating this version. Thanks for posting this...Hope lots of youngsters find this one! And oldsters too...LOL
Want this as the outro for my funeral! Seriously. I might be dead but the audience isn't - and why not give'm a footstepping reminder of the raw power of life via a couple of musical geniuses?
have this album and reason it is best cause chuck berry played on the studio recording, saw somewhere when this was new elo and chuck playing together it was awsome! he was doing his strutt and as older fellow was still great none better.
Was a senior in high school when this came out;quite ironic that Walter Murphy's disco staple "Fifth of Beethoven"--which had a similar intro (ie,Beethoven's 5th symphony)--was released just a couple years after this,as memory serves me right.
In high school, I played the intro for the orchestra instructor / band instructor... We ended up doing the spring music concert with band, orchestra, a hippie guitar junior, with bass, drums and choir.. Somewhere on old reel to reel video... And the next year a early huge MOOG Synthysizer with Tim Hayden (now a Nashville keyboard hired gun) we did Rick Wakeman's "Journey to the Center of the Earth".. Hip music for a public school...
Your all wrong. Its not 5 people got rolled on, 5 people don't know good music, 5 people thought it was dis i like. WRONG! 5 People are just stupid fags that don't know anything about good music. Nuff' said.
@david1leigh I fully agree, however I could not find this version of the recording. As a kid I had the 8-track which was this long version. The cassette and album were the shorter one. I have not seen a cd yet, so that may be the one. Does anyone know?

Right after I graduated high school I got into a chase with some park security cops. They were about to form a road block. I was debating whether to stop and the Chuck Berry intro to the song kicked in and I hit the gas pedal. One vehicle pursued me, an International Jeep, but I managed to out run him in my piece of shit Ford Capri......Anyway this song rocks and there's something about Chucks guitar riffs that get me going.............Can't believe I made it to 50 years old.
