If one of the four layers (Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere) of the earth's atmosphere were to not to exist OR were to be a bit thicker or thinner then the rest, life would cease to exist because there would be imbalance and the protection from the heat and UV from the sun and other stars and supernovas out there would penetrate our planet.
