  • it works only in lan server not in multiplayer server

  • Thanks this helped me for CSS but im now trying to add the sounds for EP1 and im not sure where to put the sound files. Help?

  • Hey, uhm. Great tutorial! Allthough I have a problem. I resampled a song, to around a samplerate of 41000 wav. But when I compile my map, it says that the sound samplerate is invalid. I tried everything, and I really need custom sounds in what Im working on. :c

  • so now, if i put the map on fpsbanana, the only file that the person will need to play the map and hear the sound, is the map after puting sound in with pakrat ?

    sorry i am french

  • plz help. my sound browser only shows like three sounds and they are ambient sounds or whatever and thats in the game sounds. in raw theres one sound and its like a soundscape and in scenes there is nothing. i have tried evrethying like refreshing it, redownloading souce sdk and hl2. also verrifing integrity of game cache and still no sounds in the browser. the weird part is when i play hl2, all the sounds are in the game, but in hammer there are no sounds in the browser. please help...thanks.

  • how to make waterfall on source sdk?

  • Hey philip!

I made a sound puted in right directory but there is a problem i dont have sound in hammer (there is no file in hammer).

I play sound with Windows media player and then whole sound just runs out in few seconds :(

sound long is 3:20 (its sond)

    Help me!

  • audacity doesnt have "save as WAV" anymore on my version, only mp3, what should i do?

  • hey everyone if you would like to know how to make your voice sound like a combine pm me asking:D

  • I've forgot how to loop sound.....

  • batty!

  • thanks for the tutorial! helpful indeed. A note for anyone who uses CS5 Adobe Soundbooth to record and reinforce their sound file (it's great software), but for some reason it adds metadata into the file which will make it not work in game for some messed up reason. Put the file into audacity then when saving it as a wav file hit clear on the metadata screen and the file should then work in-game. I found this out whilst working on my mod.

  • I've got a problem with L4D2... Everything is ok in the menu, the music theme is being played. The problem starts when i start a new game on any map. There's no sound at all. Please help

  • @superhumanoid Go to the options, see what the sounds are set to (Sound effects volume)

  • @3kliksphilip they r set to maximum..... still no progress

  • @superhumanoid I'm afraid I don't have any experience of doing this with l4d2, I wonder if it's different to other games in this regard. Try using a normal sound sample already in l4d2 and see if that plays. Then, try making a map with a custom sound for another game (like css) and see if that works. This should help to identify where the problem is.

  • @3kliksphilip I have a similar problem to this with a Gmod map im working on. Menu and diffrent maps, every thing works. Go into my map and there is nothing except the occasional little blip of sound when i shoot.

  • @3kliksphilip So if someone downloads the map, will he be able to hear the custom sounds?

    Anyways, subbed :D!

  • Hey philip, Ive got this little problem. Im mapping for portal, and I need to know how to get the sounds into the... Well, game files obviously. But I cant find a sound folder for Portal, and I cant add files to it in GCFscape. So Im wondering, how will I fix this?

  • @YetiSandvichVideos I think you just make a sound folder in the portal directory and it should override the original sounds if there are any conflicts.

  • what who what where? :D

  • When my custom sound (WAV) is supposed to be played in my left 4 dead 2 map, it says: ''S_StartSound: Failed to load sound 'custom sounds\gruntenabled01.wav', file probably missing from disk/repository'' even though I have placed the sound in the right folder. I made a folder inside the 'sounds' folder of L4D2, and called it ' custom sounds ' .

Please help me out if you know what I've done wrong!

  • Fantastic tutorial. Very easy to follow. Though I'm running into a few issues. I'm running Hammer with Portal 2 and I can load my sound in Hammer fine, but when I run the map, it refuses to play. I have my sound located in Common/Portal 2/portal2/sounds/radio_custom (since the game doesn't put folders in Steam user folders) and it's saved as a wave file at 44100 Hz 32-bit Stereo. Anyone know how to get this working?

  • @AMD2600 How long is the sound? Try experimenting with shorter ones. First, use one built into HL2 to ensure that it isn't just that you've configured it incorrectly.

  • Thank you ! it works

  • Or go to my computer, c drive, Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common

or hit run and paste C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common

A lot simpler than searching for shit

Chances are that if steam is NOT in the default location, then the person knows where it's at. If not then we can assume that it would be in the default location.

  • @darkrashan Awww you made a playlist :)

  • Comment removed

  • I can't run Pakrat on Vista O.o any suggestion? It launch the batch file but the black window closes in 1 sec :(

  • @ExSadanobu Try the Executable Jar File in the folder instead

  • @3kliksphilip

    It does nothing :(

  • @ExSadanobu I'm afraid I don't know then. Sorry.

  • thanks so much!! but i have one question i've made a control board with lots of buttons for different songs, each one has a sprite that toggles on and off when the song is playing or not, i can get the songs to start and the sprite to come on fine, when i press the 'toggled' button again the sprite goes off as desired but the audio doesnt want to stop? is there an over ride thing i have to do or anything?

    thankyou very much

  • @harrym2457 It's a bug, I recommend just setting the sound's volume to 0.

  • @3kliksphilip yeah thats what i did in the end, just makes it longer to program it all as i got lots of songs haha, mapping a superclub still got to work out how to make moving lights and lasers yet if thats possible lol. thanks anyway (:

  • @harrym2457 Make sure you have the audio flags do not loop unchecked. Make a logic timer that starts when the music does and refires at the songs length, then make it stop the ambient on timer, so the music will stop to prevent repeating This will allow the button to stop the music. Also add a disable on the button to disable the logic timer so it doesn't keep counting if the music is stopped early.

Thats what worked for me, I wasnt able to manually stop the music unless it was looped.

  • @viperknight1 i just made it set volume at 0 on button out, and put the start volume in the settings to ten, it works fine, button out it stops and when u press the button in it starts again from the beginning :D thanks tho! :)

  • @harrym2457 Ah brilliant, I wonder why that is.

  • Well the way I have it the mortar keeps exploding untill the map crashes.. So obviously I have something MUCKED up.. LOL..

  • Using a tnt to blow up a working motar, which is also an objective. HELP.. I am so lost with this..

  • @paynesmanor0 Any bit of that in particular?

  • What's the sample rate that I need for sounds to work?

  • For some reason, the "sound" folder is not in most of the files (i.e. "portal", "day of defeat", etc), and the one that it is in - hl2 - only has one sound file. Is this because I don't have most of the games necessary for this or because I have source engine 9?

  • @REXanadu Make one and it will still work.

  • I made a StopSound button but it does not work.

I have this as my outputs:

    OnDamage

    Ambientname

    StopSound

I diden't do any thing else.

What should i do more? Or what did i do wrong?

I have a playsound button and it works...

  • @SomeOneNr48 There is a bug that stops sounds from... not stopping. The easiest fix would be just to set the sound's volume to 0.

  • @3kliksphilip 3kliksphilip i wanna make a func_breakable with custom sounds (TNT explode from minecraft to be activated when someone shoots and breakes it) i can't see any option and even if there is with an output on an ambient generic how do i desable the sound from the normal explosion on env_explosion?

  • @KIUBIX3 You can disable the sound of a normal explosion by going to its flags properties and by ticking the 'No Sound' option. Next up, don't look to the outputs of the ambient_generic, but to the func_breakable.

    onbreak

    (name of ambient_generic)

    playsound

  • @3kliksphilip Oh ok thanks and i love your tutorials. It helped me alot on making my tf2 map. I'll send you a video of it when it's finished. What do you think CP or PL? (control points or payload incase you don't know)

  • @KIUBIX3 I don't think I can make that decision for you.

  • @3kliksphilip Forget it i got my map finished i just need to add the textures and all that and make a wall around it to block ppl to go to the skybox. It's a payload map. It looks nice. I'll try to upload to gamebanana today

  • @KIUBIX3 Cool

  • @SomeOneNr48 I would advise you to use ambient_generic instead for looping sounds and music. With ambient_generic you can loop the sound AND stop it.

    1. Create an ambient_generic object

    2. Fill in everything that applies to your sound/music

    3. Flags, 1st and 2nd should be ticked, 3rd should be left unticked

    4. Make a logic_auto and in the outputs feild put the name of the ambient_generic and pick "stop_sound"

    5. ???

    6. Profit!

  • @Deltalock121 ...what do you think SomeOneNr48 was using?

  • @3kliksphilip Bah, sorry -.-'

  • I'm using the garrysmod version of SDK, I tried adding the sound to addons and creating my own sound folder, but no dice, any advice?

  • @draco10101

I don't think you should add the sound to the addons folder.

  • Nevermind about that comment, i found your comment saying you have to use 44,1 KHz. But i got another question. How do i make the song loop? I got "Is NOT Looped" unmarked, but it still wont loop.

  • @GreenGiantShit This sounds like the opposite to the problem that most people have. I suggest choosing a sound that's already been made and seeing if that works. That will determine whether the problem is with your sound file or the way you're configuring it.

  • @3kliksphilip

I tried another song now, that comes with Windows 7 in .mp3 format. Unfortenly it wont work aswell. I use a logic_auto entity with the Output: OnNewGame Targets entities named: music Input: PlaySound

I use no delay, Remove on Fire is disabled, and i have tried using Fire Once Only enabled and disabled. I have tried using a trigger_once, but the song still wont loop.

  • @GreenGiantShit No, I mean one of the sounds already in Hammer.

  • @3kliksphilip

Well, sounds from Hammer works. Thats odd.

  • @3kliksphilip

The weird thing is that i use Audacity to export the song as .wav and it yet wont loop.

  • @GreenGiantShit Perhaps it's the length of the sample. How long is it? (Or how large in MB?) Songs and stuff can cause problems, you might be better off making them mp3.

  • @3kliksphilip

I tried an mp3 now, didn't work. The song that i want to use is 3,92 MB big and is 2 minutes and 49 seconds long.

  • @GreenGiantShit How do you know it won't work? Are you simply saying that because there's no preview in Hammer, or did you test it in-game as well?

  • @3kliksphilip

    I have tested in-game.

  • @GreenGiantShit In that case, I don't know then. Sorry.

  • @3kliksphilip

Good news! In order to make a .WAV sound file to loop, you need to put cues at the start and at the end of the sound file. Goldwave got a nice feature to do so. You should put an annotation or something in the video incase someone got the same problem as i had.

  • I need some help. I also want to add a song so it plays upon respawning like Zoivei, but i get an error which wont let me play the song while i am in the game. The error says: *** Invalid sample rate (32000) for sound 'trade_easy_background_music\earthbound_buy_something_will_ya_final.wav'.

I have tried changing the sample rate but that wont fix it. Im trying to get this working in Team Fortress 2.

  • How do i make a button that stops the sound(s). I have these as Outputs:

    OnDamaged

    (Ambient Name)

    StopSound.

and i haven't done any thing else with that button

(i have a button that starts the sound and it work...)

  • Good tutorial, but your naming habits are atrocious. When you're developing a game with a team, calling any file a name like "David" will confuse others, because it's non-descriptive. You call a sound something like "generator_start" or "generator_idle" or "generator_stop" - so that anyone on your team knows what it is without having to mess around.

You should be training people to use good naming techniques, instead of sloppy, cutsy-putsy one.

  • @XFuncCaRteR Some people just want to watch the world burn.

  • @3kliksphilip That's an evasion of the original point.

There is something called "negative training". It's when you train people - provide tutorials, whatever - but ingrain bad habits. You're actually "anti-teaching".

It's an extremely important habit in game development to use clear, *explicit* names. Notice the names of my example sound assets - "generator_start", "generator_stop" and "generator_idle" - you know exactly what they are. "David", however, is cryptic and confusing. What is it?

  • @XFuncCaRteR It's the name of the ambient_generic entity.

  • This isent something about custom sounds. But when i make an ambient_generic and make any kind of citizen sound it sounds like an female the most of the times when i want it to sound like an male...any way to fix this?

  • @maxkhson Which sound file are you using?

  • How do you make the sound play so when you enter the map it plays? Instead of a button

  • @Zoivei Use a logic_auto entity and in its outputs, make something along the lines of...

    OnNewGame

    (name of ambient_generic)

    PlaySound

  • @3kliksphilip Thank you for the quick reply bud, but it doesn't play for some odd reason :S

  • @Zoivei Try some other outputs instead of OnNewGame. Or just make a trigger_once around the spawn area, so that when somebody spawns they set it off.

  • @3kliksphilip Thank you so much bud! The trigger_once worked :) I just set the output to OnTrigger. Greatly appreciate this help!

  • How do you stop the sound ? i tried making another button and instead of playsound put stopsound but it doesnt work :(

  • @Anobeseturtle It's a glitch. I think the easiest way is to simply set the sound's volume to 0.

  • Finally a tutorial video where the voice is actually loud and good. Thank you.

  • @CSSoffGhostDivision The one in the maps folder with your map's name. It's a BSP file.

  • Thanks man all sdk tutorial are great :D you are ... AWESOME XD

  • ah man i remember watching you vids years ago and you taught me alot and then i stopped mappingl. now when i start mapping again i find you you so got my sub

  • some custom sounds work..

    but other ones dont.

    its all wave files

  • @sorryipwnu69 Maybe it depends on the length of the sound file

  • @3kliksphilip No, its not that, i have a sound over 10 seconds that work, but one of 7 seconds dont..

  • @sorryipwnu69 Strange. And you made them all in exactly the same way? What if you tried renaming them?

  • @3kliksphilip renaming them dont work either.i downloaded them from a site (soundbibleDOTcom)

  • @sorryipwnu69 Are you SURE that they're all the same sound file type? If they're not 44100 HZ then they won't work.

  • @3kliksphilip i hear it in source sdk, but not ingame

  • @sorryipwnu69 Does the length matter at all when it comes to hearing them in-game?

  • Comment removed

  • I love your tuturials they have helped me a lot. I have one complaint about this and idk if you were doing this so other people could understand it or not but wav means wave.

  • how do i find the sounds in tf2 :|

  • I did this and I put it in the map but in-game in the console it says:

"Failed to load sound "lol/lovethewayyoulie1.wav", file probably missing from disk/repository"

What am I doing wrong? I put it in cstrike/sound/lol, and in hammer I can play the sound through the sound browser. Other sounds work fine.

  • @thegrandmasteryoda i have had the same problem but on the sound entity click is not looped this might help

  • Will this work with an entire song? I've been trying to get a song to work in my map using this method, but when I activate the button . . . CS:S crashes. =( Please help.

  • @thegrandmasteryoda Try a shorter sound file.

  • @3kliksphilip Hey. Thanks for your quick reply. The smaller file did work, however I am wanting to get a fairly long song to play in my map. I tried compressing the file size, but when I converted it to wav format it became huge again. Do you know of a way to decrease the size of a wav file, or if there is another format that would work?

  • @thegrandmasteryoda wav is an uncompressed file format, as far as I know there is no way of reducing the size. I've never really looked into it, but apparently it is possible to get mp3 files to work (these are smaller in size).

  • @3kliksphilip Ok. Now I kinda feel like im takin advantage of your help or somthin. Please let me know if I'm bugging you, and I'll go hide under a computer generated rock or somthing. Anywho, when I put mp3's in the folder you show here on this video, they don't show up on the list in SDK when I type their name in the filter. =/

  • @WhiteLionKing10 I'm going to have to redo this video, since this method simply doesn't work with long sound files and I honestly can't say I've looked into the mp3 option at all. Sorry.

  • @3kliksphilip That's ok. Thanks so much for helping me. You have been such a huge help to me as I'm entering the world of mapping. I really don't know what I would've done withoutcha. =)

  • @WhiteLionKing10 Aww :)

  • Thanks. :)

  • @3kliksphilip

I've found the problem for the custom sound in Alien Swarm SDK.

  • @Eliminator1900

    And solved it.

  • Comment removed

  • @Eliminator1900 What do you mean, 'button texture'? You can use ANY texture you want, it doesn't matter. And if your music doesn't play, try a smaller sound sample. Like, 5 seconds long or something.

  • Comment removed

  • @Eliminator1900 So... what's your problem? Texture: button or sound that plays on the entire map? I don't understand what you mean by the first sentence, and the second is just a case of ticking the 'play everywhere' flag in the flags tab for an ambient_generic entity.

  • i think i did everything but it wasnt there when i browsed in the ambient generic. i use hl2 ep2. do i have to save it somewhere besides a new folder in hl2?

  • @adamdabomb8 New source games are all contained within massive GCF files, but if you make the correct directory and put things in there, they'll replace / add to the original sounds. Make folders leading to this location - Steam\steamapps\ep2\ep2\sound , put sounds in there and HOPEFULLY they'll show up.

  • @3kliksphilip in steamapps its just sourcemods, my steam name, and common. and if i go into my steam name and do half life 2: episode 2. then there is no sounds even in ep2. im probably doing SOMETHING wrong. i cant ever get stuff like that to work.

  • @adamdabomb8 Yes, I'm aware of that. You've got to make the folders yourself. I'm afraid I don't know the exact directory names, but try the one I suggest in my last comment. I'm basing it off something I read in some forums which suggested portal\portal instead of ep2\ep2, so perhaps it will work if you try it.

  • @3kliksphilip no luck. great tutorial though. thanks.

  • Pakrat doesn't want to work with my specific map. Other maps that I downloaded from Garrysmod and the internet work fine in Pakrat, but when I pick my map the additional window doesn't appear (the one with all the options like add etc). Any ideas?

  • @SWBF2Reviews Which file type are you selecting for your map?

  • @3kliksphilip BSP, of course.

  • @SWBF2Reviews Just testing :P I'm afraid I don't know what you could do. What about other maps that you've made?

  • @3kliksphilip They worked fine. Could the name of the map be the problem?

  • @SWBF2Reviews Sounds strange that your other ones work and this doesn't. Try changing the name of your map. There mustn't be a space in the name. What if you rename it to one of the maps that does work? (Renaming the one that does work to something else beforehand, obviously)

  • @3kliksphilip That did not work.

  • @3kliksphilip In that case, I don't know. Sorry. You're going to have to find out what's different between this map and the other ones which do work.

  • USE mp3. The size is 4 times smaller than wav files. But you can't preview these files in the editor. Well, I'm having a problem with having files play automatically when I'm ingame. They just don't play. They are ambient sounds that are not started silent, they loop, and are not played everywhere.

  • @av3nger3 What, you'ev managed to get mp3s to work? I never managed to, which is why I tell people to use wav.

  • @3kliksphilip

They never loop. They CAN be triggered. But only wave files can be looped and must have "Cue Marks" added to the audio file using an audio editing program to specify when a loop ends and begins.

  • @3kiksphilip some ppl been asking how you can make it so you can turn the music on and off with the same button well in ambient_generic go to flags and just untick is NOT looped and it will work

  • in the end with pakrat?? can i do the same with cubemap file??? .prt i think its called.

  • My sound simply does not play. :[

  • @3kiksphilip i did it my sound type wasnt set 2 raw

  • @MultiFalcoLombardi I'm sorry, since my first comment to you asked about this I assumed you had checked.

  • @3kiksphilip its not finding smaller wav files what i made using audacity

  • @MultiFalcoLombardi In that case, I don't know. Sorry.

  • @3kiksphillip im mapping for css and i put it in the sound folder in cstrike and ive tried restarting hammer but doesnt help could it be cos am using actuall songs not recordings but i made them wav

  • @MultiFalcoLombardi Did you make sure they were 44100 Hz? Did you use audacity? You could try a shorter sample, large files don't work well in Source. Try a 5 second sample and see if that shows up.

  • @3kiksphilip i did everything you said made what songs i wanted made them wav and when i go to add them and i click browse in the filter it cant find them

  • @MultiFalcoLombardi Try restarting Hammer. Which game are you mapping for, and which folder did you place them in? If you've done it the way I show in the video then it really should show up. Be sure to look in both game sounds and raw.

  • @MultiFalcoLombardi Refresh sound list.

  • Quick question, how do I make it so the song can be stopped? For example, I press the button once, and it begins to play. Then I press the same button again and it stops. The song would repeat once you press it again. I've tried everything but can't get it to stop, it just replays from the beginning.

    Plz & ty!

  • @Jackles2012 Hi, I suppose you could try setting its volume to 0.

  • @3kliksphilip In case you were curious, I actually found out I had to use "OnIn" and "OnOut" instead of "Onpressed" to make the sound start and stop each time I press it.

  • @Jackles2012 On the button configuration tickle the box that says "fire once only" :D

  • If you're using soundscripts, are there anything else you should do to get it to work? I've noticed many maps including a soundcache file. How do I create one? Do I need it to get my music to work ingame?

I managed to pakrat the music and try to evoke it as usual. The other music bits in the soundscript work.

  • @nogoodnameleftforme I don't think so. If this video doesn't work then I don't know how to do it. I suggest consulting the almighty valve developer site.

  • The audacity window wont let me export the WAV file.....

I mean theres no opyion for it........

  • @Jonah64100 Are you sure you've actually recorded a sound file in the first place?

  • The audacity window wont let me export the WAV file.....

  • Hey when i try to do the pakrat thing withmy batty, wav it says Pakrat v0.95 - by Rof (rof@mellish.org.uk)

    Reading batty.wav

    Not a map file: 1347633750 != 1179011410

    Couldn't find pak file EOCD

And then it wont work :o Help plz !!!

  • @Shakzpvp You need to open your BSP file, not the wav file, since the wav file is just a sound sample, it's not your map.

  • @3kliksphilip Hello, well theres isent any BSP file of it.. and i rly dont know how to make one BSP :o

  • @Shakzpvp Your map should be a BSP file.

  • can i make a sound that will pop up when a player dies or win or something like that

can i make it possible to work wit bots :P =?

  • @theagemon5 Sorry, I don't know. When playing CSS this stuff tends to be a server-configuration, rather than a map.

  • @3kliksphilip ok well thanks for answering me :P

  • @3kliksphilip ok well thanks for answering me :P

  • it was 44100 already, i changed it to something lower tough. but that didnt work eighter :@ any more seguestions ?

  • @campisable If it was 44100 already then I don't think I can help.

  • " Invalid sample rate (48000) for sound 'norlandet_ungdomskole\01_mw2_nuke_sound.wav"

     - is the message i get in console when i try to play my song inn css, halp!

  • @campisable When you make the sound, save it as 44100 Hz instead

  • Could you make or do you have a tutorial on how to add custom textures into maps?

All that I have seen are either outdated or the person talking does not know how to do a tutorial as simple and as clearly as you do.

  • @KoutaFG I did but it was outdated. I suggest looking up vtfedit or 360g, they both help to make the VTF and VMT files (the two you need for a texture. The VTF is the texture, and the VMT tells source how it behaves.. ie, material, etc)

  • @3kliksphilip I have vtfedit, tried to use it but when tried to use the texture in my map it was missing checkered texture.

  • @KoutaFG What did you put in the VMT file?

  • BATTY! :D

  • @Nigrkek Try both RAW and gamesounds. Try putting it in a shorter address, like the Sound one. Does anything else from that folder show up?

  • @Nigrkek Make sure when browsing for your sound, you are looking for "raw" sounds other than the default "game sounds".

  • i dont have a sound folder plz help me

  • @dudg0 create one in //Steam/Steamapps/**USERNAMEHERE**/Counter Strike Source/Cstrike folder and it will work perfectly.

  • Is it possible to play a song/sound when the player dies?
