Visible light gets absorbed by the surface, loses some of its energy and is re-emitted as infrared light (the kind used in heat lamps), which is what is blocked by greenhouse gases from escaping into space since the wavelengths of visible and infrared are different and affected different by molecules in the atmosphere.

It's because solar radiation ( AKA radiant heat ) has a lower wavelength ( 0.2 to 2 microns ) compared to when the earth radiates it back ( 4 to 40 microns with most popular at 10). Greenhouse gases block wavelenghs of mostly 8-14 microns so solar radiation comes in east but it doesn't come out as easy

Soda Teaches explanation does overlook reflected light. But if you can take that as a steady figure the explanation is a good simple approximation (I gave it a thumbs up). Part of the solar radiation is reflected (about 0.4), part is absorbed (about 0.6) for each 1 unit of solar radiation). The absorbed part warms the surface, this creates convection and radiation.
No simple explanation is ever 100% correct. :)

That would violate the 2nd Law of Thermo, because it would imply the separate hot-cold sink state would be just as likely as the everything in thermal equilibrium (same temp) state.

@natdavi: Radiation that entered through the atmosphere in short wave form tries to leave in long wave form. 'Greenhouse' gases absorb these longer wavelengths. Some of the long wave radiation is not absorbed by anything and just leaves Earth, but most of it is absorbed. It then heats the atmosphere, escapes into space, or radiates back to Earth.

Methane Releases from Arctic Shelf May Be Much Larger and Faster Than Anticipated

Research results, published in the March 5 edition of the journal Science, show that the permafrost under the East Siberian Arctic Shelf, long thought to be an impermeable barrier sealing in methane, is perforated and is starting to leak large amounts of methane into the atmosphere. Release of even a fraction of the methane stored in the shelf could trigger abrupt climate warming.
As Martin Heimann writes in Science: Wetlands and permafrost soils, including the sub-sea permafrost under the Arctic Ocean, contain at least twice the amount of carbon that is currently in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Release of a sizable fraction of this carbon as carbon dioxide and/or methane would lead to warmer atmospheric temperatures, causing yet more methane to be released. It would thus create a positive feedback loop that amplifies global warming.

The supposed hottest year on record was 1998. So that means the earth has been cooling since then.We have since pumped a lot more CO2 in the air so shouldn't it be getting hotter and hotter every year? But it is not. Why isn't it?

We are adding more carbon dioxide to the greenhouse effect's natural amount. I can't remember what this does exactly but I'm sure it adds more heat in the process..If we can stop creating so much extra carbon dioxide we can lower the Earths temperatures and save many animals including the ones in the polar icecaps like the polar bears, seals, and the penguins. If they lose their habitat where are they going to go? The zoo? Also if only Greenland melted he oceans would rise causing major floods.

@Boxers0 The light radiation that enters the atmosphere is not the same as the one emitted by the Earth. Visible light gets absorbed by the surface, loses some of its energy and is re-emitted as infrared light (the kind used in heat lamps), which is what is blocked by greenhouse gases from escaping into space since the wavelengths of visible and infrared are different and affected different by molecules in the atmosphere.

It's because solar radiation ( AKA radiant heat ) has a lower wavelength ( 0.2 to 2 microns ) compared to when the earth radiates it back ( 4 to 40 microns with most popular at 10). Greenhouse gases block wavelenghs of mostly 8-14 microns so solar radiation comes in east but it doesn't come out as easy

Soda Teaches explanation does overlook reflected light. But if you can take that as a steady figure the explanation is a good simple approximation (I gave it a thumbs up). Part of the solar radiation is reflected (about 0.4), part is absorbed (about 0.6) for each 1 unit of solar radiation). The absorbed part warms the surface, this creates convection and radiation.
No simple explanation is ever 100% correct. :)

You put a blowtorch to an object and the heat absorbed by the object would immediately be sent back to the blowtorch.
That would violate the 2nd Law of Thermo, because it would imply the separate hot-cold sink state would be just as likely as the everything in thermal equilibrium (same temp) state.

I see. The greenhouse gases are intelligent! When the sun rays come to earth they let them go. But if they try to escape it's a different story. Well, at least they seem more intelligent than the moron who made this cartoon.

that's not how it works! light is absorbed and reradiated at a different wavelength! reflected light goes back into space because it is not absorbed by the atmosphere which did not absorb it when it entered it the first time!

@natdavi: Radiation that entered through the atmosphere in short wave form tries to leave in long wave form. 'Greenhouse' gases absorb these longer wavelengths. Some of the long wave radiation is not absorbed by anything and just leaves Earth, but most of it is absorbed. It then heats the atmosphere, escapes into space, or radiates back to Earth.

@LordCustard ya I know. You left out the part about how the radiation changes from short wave to long wave. It's absorbed by rocks/dirt/wtv which heats up and reradiates the energy. Reflected radiation has not changed it's wavelength and there4 will not be absorbed by the atmosphere. All I'm saying is it should say "reflected" at "reradiated" at 0:18

@y2knoproblem: This video is a vast simplification, but what makes you think the Greehouse Effect is pure magical thinking? Can you find one climatologist who agrees with you? Not wanting to shift the burden of proof onto the one making the negative claim, I poked around for a while and found this seemingly well-sourced section of the American Institute of Physics website. Dissolved CO2 makes acid.
By 2100, at current rates of increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide, average ocean pH will drop 0.3 - 0.4 and be @ 7.8 with an increase in acidic H+ ion concentration of 150-200%.
That will cause a 50% DECREASE of ocean carbonate ions (CO3).
Carbonate ions are needed for growth by plankton & corals at the base of the ocean's food chain.

Methane Releases from Arctic Shelf May Be Much Larger and Faster Than Anticipated
NSF - March 4, 2010.
Research results, published in the March 5 edition of the journal Science, show that the permafrost under the East Siberian Arctic Shelf, long thought to be an impermeable barrier sealing in methane, is perforated and is starting to leak large amounts of methane into the atmosphere. Release of even a fraction of the methane stored in the shelf could trigger abrupt climate warming.

As Martin Heimann writes in Science: Wetlands and permafrost soils, including the sub-sea permafrost under the Arctic Ocean, contain at least twice the amount of carbon that is currently in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Release of a sizable fraction of this carbon as carbon dioxide and/or methane would lead to warmer atmospheric temperatures, causing yet more methane to be released. It would thus create a positive feedback loop that amplifies global warming.

Temperatures on Mars have increased slightly over a 20-year period due to the action of Martian winds, scientists have found.
New research has shown that dusty tornadoes called dust devils and gusty winds have helped the surface of Mars become darker, allowing it to absorb more of the sun's rays.
Published in this week's journal Nature, show that the decrease in Mars's reflectivity has caused a warming.

No 78topper, there are many causes of global temperature change. GHG, Solar Irradiance, Volcanoes, El Nino & ocean circulation, and most important, changes in Earth's orbit & axis perturbations.
ONLY GHG has had any major effects the last 35 years. Global temps. have spiked 0.5C+ with NO INCREASE in solar irradiance.
WHY???
BTW, El Nino events have also strengthened 60% in the last 50 years due to global warming.)

you just answered your own question. either volcanoes, el nino, ocean circulation, changes in orbit, and axis perturbations, none of which are man caused.
You guys never cease to amaze me. On one hand you cite a pre-civilization event where temps rose 2C and oceans rose 9 M, and on the other hand you are completely unwilling to admit that any similar occurrence today might also be a completely natural event.

Scientists understand quite clearly all of the factors which force climate change.
None of them are the cause forcing Earth's climate change the last 50 years EXCEPT green house gases.
If you have another explanation, what is it?

Heat isn't "Stored" by "Greenhouse gases"
Heat Energy converts into kenitic energy known as "wind"
Also heat carries water vapor into the air and as the heated moist air rises it cools as it reaches the upper atmosphere creating clouds Heat and Weather

But half the light coming in is also stopped from getting in by the same effect. The temperature of light is determined by the body emitting the light; therefore is not more energy prevented from entering than leaving?

The supposed hottest year on record was 1998. So that means the earth has been cooling since then.We have since pumped a lot more CO2 in the air so shouldn't it be getting hotter and hotter every year? But it is not. Why isn't it?
I'm not saying for certain that global warming is a scam. But I am saying it doesn't seem likely to be happening and maybe humankind is not big enough to cause or prevent it.

See,the reason the air ISN't getting hotter is because it can still rain,there is still water,and the sun can't evaporate the whole sea because evaporating just helps the warter cycle make rain/snow(if it's really cold)anyway AND there's wind chill so the air MIGHT be getting hotter but because there's wind we don't notice it.

Like you I'm not a scientific and I'd just advice you to read Financial Times' "Hottest decade chills the sceptics" (Dec 8 2009) which would answer you best.
But it looks I'm lucky not having lobbies lying all over my country... They want you to doubt scientists even if you don't know what scientists methodically found out.

95% of greenhouse gases is water vapor. If we pollute the hell out of everything we can increase c02 by fractions of a %. Whether it is warmer or coller the source cannot be c02.
