@jdrendel827 Not that's a trumpet call Mr. Watkins makes by hand. He is the premiere custom call maker, or one off, in this country!! The caller makes different sounds that, are great specially when turkeys are pressured and have heard all the tricks. This will bring them in, when nothing else will. Check out my other video on Marlin, he plays a trumpet there as well!!
the reason I clicked this video was the sample image.
I smoke a tobacco pipe (and work in a tobacconist) and my first day with my first pipe, I drew on it with my lips too tight and it sounded just like a duck call!
I thought someone else had found out my secret, but it's been made public now!!
Great video and hunt, Cheers!
PS, English Springer? I have a Springer/English Cocker mix, more commonly called a Field Bred Springer Spaniel, wonderful bird dogs!
Mr. Watkins shot a jake becouse that's what came to the gun. In the fall season, hens are also legal to shoot. Most of the birds that respond to the calling are young birds looking for moma or company.... a jake is actually a trophy as opposed to a very young turkey... more meat on the bone :-)
@ramajama125 I think I have contact info listed either in the start or at the end of the video..... Marlin Watkins is one of the best custom call makers bar none! Give it a shot, you'll be glad you did!
@seaduckhunt nice. so if you were going to move how long would you wait in an area before moving on and what would make you want to move? if you do move how do you know a bird isnt on its way and just being silent?
Well, that's a depends on how long your willing to sit there and enjoy the silent woods... If I don't get response from turkey looking to flock up again, say in 30 minutes.... I'd move. But I'm not very patient. A busted flock is quickly looking to rejoin , specially the young birds.... they get very lonely alone, and are not used to it. So you should hear some calling back and forth as they try to regroup.
If you watch further to see that Marlin and Jim are joking about the JAKE's beard.... Fall hunting , hens are actually the trophy most gunners target... but as you see, the one that was shot was a very skinny jake. A trophy none the less.
Thanks for sharing! I'm also just starting to turkey hunt. How aggressive should you be with a call during spring seasons? Every so many minutes, or whenever a tom responds to your call? Also, I'm looking for a sight for a Browning BPS that I can use for both turkey and trap shooting. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks
how aggressive... well depends how good you can call. If you sound like a turkey, you can hit them pretty hard, in the woods, I'm always hearing the turkeys talking back and forth. But if your your gunning public land, and you continue to make him respond, not only are you slowing him down from coming to you, your also making him gobble, and possibly noticed by other hunters.
Kee Kee, is a good dog. She knows the ropes, and knows to sit there till the shot, when Marlin always lets her go for her reward... Might try that, and see if it helps. Dogs are pretty smart, and get the game soon enough. The only times I've seen Marlin not let Kee Kee go, is if we know the other birds working are close... Unlike here on the vid. There were others working, but very far away...
Nice caller i thought he was smoking a pipe for a second

What would be the best turkey caller for a first timer going turkey hunter?
stevennyc21 2 years ago
A good boxcall or longbox, like the one Mr. Watkins has, would be good for you. Give him a call, and he'll help you out.
