hey mate! I have a problem with gemini tt1000! When I bought it I balanced the all, but found himself in the Issue will ba anti skate my work at all, and when you scratch a little tone arm moves, but nothing terrible. whether it is by default done or ..? Thanks in advance
I own a SL BD2??(exact model unknown) Technics from 1990. Perfect condition, but when I set the antiskate as you did did on this video, it wouldn't play any size records! The arm kept forcing itself backward once I put on an actual record.
OTOH - at the specification displayed near the counterweight, it says "Factory Set to 1.25grams". At that setting the arm swung across the blank faster than the human eye could follow it - but it plays records just dandy. Strange!
My Audio-Technica CN5625AL cartridge kept backwards skipping on some rougher records, and I knew it must have had something to do with the antiskating, so I referred to your video for help. I followed your instructions carefully, and I'm happy to report my skipping woes are over! Thank you so much Jon for the help!
I totally understand what you are saying, but what happens when you change speed from 33 to 45, is there more pull to the centre, do you need to use more 'anti-skate'? I really should know this, but I didn't think to ask at college, I didn't think to ask at the station. I just check the stylus appears centred if I don't have a scope and setup discs. I'll balance channels if there is suspicion of error, but I've not studied lateral bias in detail. Please examine it and report backj.
I have a question: does having a clean record on the one hand but scratched, one of the cracks deep enough, can I adjust its anti-skate? I'll be on a new user, 2x SL1200 so I have no experience. Can the scratched vinyl, discard the needle? thanks for the help from PL
i just rest a coin or a battery on it, im 17 so im probably ruining it! its murder trying to play fleetwood mac big love as it skips like mad! i have a bush rpa1
@curtis8516 omg i love that song haha, fleetwood mac is amazing, im only 21 so i have memories of listening to it with my dad in the car as a kid, great song!
further to my message below i think i've cracked it. even though the recommended weight is 4 if i have it at 3 and the antiskate at about 2.8 it works spot on. tried it with a 1 sided record and it stays perfectly still in the middle. think the problem is with the technics antiskate dial only going up to 3 when i have the weight on 4 grammes (or 0 in the case of the technics) 3 isn't enough antiskate so it goes to the centre.
quick question for you mate. i have an sl1210 mk2 and i'm using an ortofon pro s concorde cartridge with it. with the cartridge i'm using the recommended tracking force is 4 grammes so i have it set to 4 grammes but with the technics counterweight that means it's at 0 because it only goes up to 3.5. the technics instruction manual tells you to have the antiskate set to the same as your counterweight so therefore it would be 0. however on a 1 sided vinyl it's whizzing to the middle of the record.
So you saw your ugly mug on the smooth side great. Hey question which country produces more Turntable Champions(DNC winners) & has dominated the turntable culture since the 80's?
If you don't have a "blank" vinyl, the general rule of thumb is that you set the antiskate to the same ammount as your tone arm weight. For example : 3 on tone arm weight dial, 3 on antiskate setting.
Agreed. Also, look at the way q-bert basically FORCED that counterweight into position like that, in his video. That poor Technics :( (:
Anyone who turns a counterweight, points to the scale and says "I don't even know what the hell that does", and then proceeds to turn the counterweight the wrong way around, has no business setting up turntables.
That shouldn't be happening. Readjust your vertical tracking force (weight) to what is recommended by your cartridge manufacturer, and then make sure your turntable is PERFECTLY LEVEL.
l'm having problem with the tonearm moving to outside of the record. l tried to adjust and what is mentioned on the vid but i'm still having problem with it.
Make sure you have the weighting system on the arm set up correctly. The arm COULD be sitting too light or too HEAVY so the antiskate can't compensate for it enough
This guy's videos help me keep my basics sharp. The first time I discovered the anti-skip was AFTER I had broken my cousin's $75 Shure needle(it was my second time on the tables, I was still learning).
Personal choice man, but maybe your deck was not or is not set up correctly and it doesn't sound as good. I went through a stage of testing different DJ carts and styli. My prefered chices were Pickering, Ortofon Super DJ series, Shure, Stanton. But that's my own opinion.
i just dont like them because they are bulky, some new records have a nice lip that comes up at the edge. With Shure's they skip a little because they get to low to the record and the lip causes it to move ahead... thats all
My record doesnt grab fast enough when it is stopped or brushed back....
I have a slippery Butter Rug slipmat. The platter seems to move fine and starts within 2seconds.
Just want to make sure if it is my slipmat. I'm not sure if other pro's in videos push it back perfectly in sync, after a back brush movement. Some1 let me know?
I would like to thank you for helping me setup my tonearm, it is something I did not know how to do before, or even thought about it, your very smart and it is easy now, I had thought it was hard to do. I have more then one turntable. One is from england, transcriptors, I guess the instructions is for more/most tonearms, I guess?. Thanks so much. I like your vids.
Yeah you can do that, I do use that method, but there are varying ways to do it. Audiophiles use test tones on test vinyls to do it. But this is a good one for DJ use or your suggestion if you don't have a "blank" vinyl
i nvr new what the hell the point of this thing was. now i do. most people moved it to help but never adjuste dproperly with a blank record... which most people dont have
but still i dont understand what the use is of anti skating.. will needle stay on the same position when there is no track? Why should you want that? when you play tracks that is quite usseless? Im a noob though so what do you win with this anti skating?
For just plain listening this is important if you want the right sound. A stereo record have right and left channel on each side of the inner walls of the groove. The centrifugal force pulls the stylus in to the center of the record. This means there will be more force on one of the walls so you get more sound from one speaker. To fix this, the horizontal counter force must be set to equalize the centrifugal force vs. down force. When this is equalized you get correct sound from both speakers.
...and for DJ's I guess it is extra important since they scratch the record back and forth, so with no equalizing of weight and forces, the stylus skates all over the place...
I tried to reply to Dwaas88, but that didn't work :P
the anti skate assists the tracking of the stylus tip between the groove walls of the vinyl. As well as achieving good stereo sepperation, a well tracked stylus wont have any added distortion and will prevent sibilence issues. An example of bad Sibilence is when "s" sounds come out as "SSHHH" sounds.
Antiskate should only be used for playback or recording purposes. I have found that If your scratching and cuing the needle tends to jump out of the groove with antiskate on.
thnx a lot now I get what`s the antiskating thnx a lot but in the manual they said to set the antiskating to the same to be equal to the wieght that u set the tone arm to like 0.5g = 0.5 on the antiskating but anyway i`ve done what you said on this video and when i try to scratch the needle is all over the place no matter how light i try to make my hands so how do i have to deal with that plz answer and thnx a lot
I think this is way too complicated. A blank disc setting is usually not accurate because a modulated groove with music causes much more drag on the stylus than a blank disc. For regular record playing, just follow Technics' instructions and set the anti skating dial to the same number as your tracking force. If you do a lot of scratching and back cueing, you may find it will skip less if you turn the anti skating way down or off.
I'm a bit puzzled Johnathan. Maybe I mist it in an earlier post. Did you you go out and buy another Tech 12 or is it another one you had laying around or did you repossess your old ones???
Yo mate, the anti skating should be set at the same value as you have your counter weight set at. So if you are tracking at 3grams you set the anti skating at 3.

Heh, I guess I had way too much wieght on my Cartridge cause regardless of the Anti-Skate position it moved to center of record at the same speed. After adjusting the wieght I found out that I can make the Cartridge stay still. Thank you so much again John. Now I have a standard ROFL!
Couldn't you work there same way as with riding pitch finding the correct spot. While the needle is on the record and record is spinning you notice it drives to one direction while this happens turn the skating so you eventually get it to stay still?
I have 2 stanton T60s, what would use suggest I do if there are no anti skating devices on them? Also where do you get vinyl thats just clear without any music on it?
Stanton STR8 arms or straight arms in general don't need an anti-skate. The STR8-150 does have a anti-skate knob but its actually not connected to anything to its not gonna have an effect. One like ur T.60 is already balanced
I find that it still jumps from time to time but thats only when I do some scratching, then the energy I find is transferred to the other side of the platter where the stylus sits on the vinyl.
not sure how you would adjust it without that dial, but you don't buy a blank vinyl. some vinyls will occasioanlly have a song on only one side and the other side will be perfectly flat. that's the case in this videop ,and the one i will post as a response
what if the table wobbles 2? like a stick with a plate on top.. it goes around when u press start.. but it dips in the same spot as it goes around.. its not bad or nothing but looking at your table it seems it was straight.. perhaps just cheaper tables?
