  • I used to love this game. It's actually really innovative and complex for its time.

  • @Ticalmc2k2 I actually think that was the real problem. It was "too" innovative and complex for its time. The consoles of that era, as well as the technology in general were just not quite ready to for a game like this.

  • I love the music of this game!

  • It's one of the worst and most expensive planes out lol

  • I remember this game... I remember my parents even got me the joy stick controller for Christmas one year. This along with StarFox64 influenced my interest in aviation... Im in the Air Force now. go figure lol

  • this game has to be played with cockpit view. In fact I always loved the music

  • haha at the G. I joe reference... so true though.

  • Sorry Mark, but I have to disagree with you. I didn't think this game was clunky at all. In fact I found it very playable, and easier than most other flight sims I tried *cough* Stealth ATF *cough* and not so boring *cough* F-15 Strike Eagle II *cough*. I liked it so much I just bought a copy of my own.

  • @infinitygenealpa Plus these 3D graphics are pretty impressive for 1991 standards on a console system.

  • holy shit, my youth revisited. that opening theme, thats implanted in my brain.

this game rocks, i think this game still looks fun, i remember thinking this is what iraq looked like when i was 8

  • holy shit, my youth revisited. that opening theme, thats implanted in my brain

  • So many memories! :-D

  • This brings back memory's, I would play this for hours. when I was 9

  • lol i got it for £1.00 on the megadrive over here in the uk

  • what will avgn sea

  • lhx was hard as shit...and boring as fuck!

  • Oh and I was absolute boss at this game and Super Monaco GP on the Sega. Boss!

  • Takes me back to the innocent days of being a 8/9/10 year old over a decade ago playing this game and the Sega Mega Drive. Memories can be so perfect!

  • i'm surprised his genesis didn't light on fire processing this

  • @Birchyboy3000 Mine did.

  • landing was a bitch...

  • How the hell did Mark get a long cartridge and not the square EA type that I have?

...I played this game for a while back in the day trying to get the hang of it, it seems very outdated

  • the first time i seen the skull when you die i got scared and ran out of the room lol...my grandma ahd to turn the tv off HAHAHAHAA!!!

    i was like 6

  • it's technically impressive considering where it's running on but it's too slow.

  • This was an excellent game especially for the year! This and M1 Abrams on megadrive gave me hours of fun!

  • Another great thing about this game was that it worked perfect with the Genesis Pilot stick and it had the easiest master cheat of all time

  • This game was so boring yet so fun at the same time. I got this for Christmas and my cousin got StarFox and we always argued about which one had better graphics lol

  • Also, your version lags alot.

  • Comment removed

  • The fps was nearly 2! And we still played the ish out of this when we were young! And Im proud of it! The first time I died on the table gave me nightmares for weeks! That fuzzy lookin' skull? Yeesh....

  • The music is awesome.

  • Wow this looks like shit. Who thought putting 3D games like this on 16-bit systems was a good idea?

  • @coneyislanddiscomark well who has good imagination...no matter how good machine you have...you won't be in real flight ship...so is funny for who grown up with a poor system.

  • I don't agree with the reviewer that the game handled sluggish. I played it with the Python joystick which made the handling fine. There was an option menu (b+c like mentioned around 4:30) where you could tweak the framerate a bit too. I played this game a lot when I was a kid :)

  • this game would be awesome if they made a n64 version of it. Or a32x version.

  • I played and still have this game. I have the old LHX game for PC and the F-19 with the F-117 option for PC. This game is a lot like LHX in terms of graphics. F-19 is much worse in terms of graphics and sound and isn't playable in that you won't enjoy achieving a mission. The plane is barely recognizable with wings and fins made up of blocks. This game F-22 is playable. Never understood why they had those weird colors on the plane. Microsoft Spaceflight Simulator was the standard for 1995.

  • I loved this game back in the day. It might not hold up compared to modern 3D games.

  • LHX attack copter was (a bit) better than this one

  • @violethigh77 I beg to differ. LHX was shit

  • graphics are pretty cool but the audio is lame

  • I like how he just starts talking about random things that have nothing to do with the game. Good job Mr. radio voice.

  • I was little when I first played this. When I died for the first time, the skull freaked the shit out of me

  • @StrikeDaMic Ha me too! I remember playing this on my nomad back in the day.

  • no wonder this game slows down,it uses realtime polygons, trough if the polygons were rendered, the game will have run way more smoother, but animated 3d takes up more space.

  • I thought it was a good game, I always thought the sluggish controls was just how hard it was to fly the plane. I loved the secret menus that were impossible to get to. I forgot Genesis even had full 3D games.

  • Who was caring for the framerate back in the the early nineties?Da shit was on 3d,that was the only thing that mattered!LEgendary game!

  • Thrust vectoring owns the sky! This thing can turn on a dime, Macross Zero-style!

  • My cartridge of the game is totally different

  • my f-22 interceptor was the big game case with that yellow tap on the side not the small one

  • @shido454 yup, an ea cartridge

  • Eh, I played the shit out of this game when I was little. But it must have been the other version because it ran way smoother than the one in the video and was on this ENORMOUS cartridge with "EOA" engraved on it and a little removable yellow thingy on the side.

I remember other games also had enormous cartriges, for some reason Shadow Of The Beast also had one.

  • @CatsBunniesDucksMice yeah, that cartridge is an ea cartridge, not just bigger in size but also space it seems...must be if it ran smoother than a normal cartridge

  • I played this game all the time. Looking back, I'll never know how I stomached that framerate.....

  • The very first ace combat

  • For someone who has supposedly spent a time with F-19 stealth fighter I am stunned how badly you treat this game. It has its own style and love just like F-19 (Yes F-19 was a bunch more realistic but still)

  • Man this takes me back. I played this game a lot when I was a kid. I remember how satisfying it was when one of your missiles hit the target :D, great stuff.

  • I am reminded of another early 1990s PC flight-combat game that I used to enjoy, Jetfighter II, which not only jumped the gun on the in-service date of the plane it used, but backed the wrong horse in the competition between the F-22 and the Northrop F-23.

The plane in Jetfighter II was the Northrop F-23 which was not selected by the Air Force (beat out by the F-22) and never went into production.

  • When I mean solid, I mean a, good, playable framerate. Now I have an idea why this game gets mixed reviews. Some play the standard, boxy, EA cart.

Others play the slimmed sega cart.

I think the official Sega cart has less data, and has more slow-down. They should have just released the regular tabbed carts that do the game justice. Zero Tolerance was a giant game, and it got a giant cart. Afterburner was an arcade game, not a sim.

  • I used to love this game. But as a kid when I got the game over screen. It freaked the crap out of me!

  • i thought this game was teh shit when i was young. i played the hell out of it

  • @shido454 as did i... i loved guiding the missiles

  • @shido454 I totally agree, I played this thing to death! Fair enough, the frame rate IS! horrible, but ya gotta give some credit, this was fairly ambitious for the old megadrive

  • I was so excited for this game simply because it had a chase cam--lol!

  • I loved this game way back in the day!

  • the game you are playing over power your sega genesis becuse the game has 3d objecets

  • The game may be extremely choppy and slow but at the time is was superb, for a console game it had a ton of functions and extras, stuff that you would only see in DOS at the time.

  • I still have this on my Mega Drive

  • starfox is better

  • @wirelessguy1 You do realise this game was made to be nothing like Starfox, right? (or afterburner for that matter) this game also did not use any extra cpu chips or ram, this is raw from the megadrive itself with no fancy extras.

  • @SpartanDiab and thats why is so slow and the enemies are monotonous? yeah thats what i thought. i've just been a nintendo fan longer than i have been a sega fan, so i'll get into this sooner or later

  • damn I remeber when I had dis game on Sega.

  • This game and F-117 Night Storm...so many memories.

  • How could you critcise this game the way you did? It was great fun! Loved the bit when you died and there's a team of surgeons surrounding your body with panic and shock on their faces as your heart monitor stops!

  • holy shit man, this brings back so many memories, i wish you showed everyone how you have to refuel!

  • oh my fuck...this was actually a decent flight sim. Not gonna get into it cause it`d just turn into a flame war but this was a good flight sim for the genesis

  • I have this game. It's totally awesome. The 3D graphics are quite amazing for a Sega Genesis game IMO.

  • Ironically, I downloaded this for PC. I've played it on my Genesis for years, loved it! I downloaded it, and because it plays better on a PC, I had trouble! Haha, the hard steering helped me play it on the Genesis!

  • looks exactly like starfox and since i have that for ds....YOU JUST SAVED ME $1 AND $3 FOR SHIPPING!!!!!!

  • I spent a lot of time playing this one years back, but could never figure out how to successfully refuel the plane. I usually just ended up running out of gas, or blowing myself and the refueling plane up.

  • wait a minute, the sega genesis could do 3d graphics????

  • not all that well. Some games like "Hard Drivin'" and F22 did use 3D polygon graphics, but you can see in this video, it's EXTREMELY sluggish.

I think technically speaking, the NES could do 3D graphics, but it would just be even more sluggish.

  • u play this on the pc today u get 150 fps

  • Yes, the plane had not been put into service until almost 15 years later, but the original prototype had flown though.

  • Oh, man, this was one of my favorite games. Just now I remembered how super mega slow it was, and that if u wanna turn then u could break a finger. :)

  • ... 1:02 ...

    ...WOW. After Burner this ain't.

  • OH Man,

    that looked just awful,

it's hard to believe they even tried 3D back then.

Even on the N64/Saturn/PS1 the 3D was pretty rough.

Have you ever reviewed Stunt FX? That's one of the first 3D games I remember on the SNES.

This game looked like it was running at just a few frames per second.

  • do what you gotta do with the time peroid

  • cheat code an inft weapon code i still remember...

  • I used to like it on the Mega Drive. I'm pretty sure it came in the dumb looking EA cartridge not in the regular cartridge. Was it really this slow?

  • I used to play this a lot as a kid. When I first saw the REAL F-22 released into service, I was like "HEY! I know you." :)

  • F15 and Mig-29 are the same kind of games for Genesis. They are better though and run much smoother.

  • This was my favorite game back in the day. Simplistic, yes. But funner than a lot of modern jet fighter games.

  • OH man i don't know how we were playing such games ....

  • Oh F-22! How I loved that game! I absolutely rocked on it! Brings back wonderful memories of a bygone age! Beautiful!

  • Unplayable? No, you are just SPOILED! You said it yourself. "I use to play F-15 strike eagle but probably couldn't play it today"

This is polygonal graphics being rendered by a freaking 8Mhz 68000 with 64KB or RAM! Give it and it's creators some credit here. I loved this game as well as other polygonal games of the time like M1 Abrams, and Hard Drivin' on the genesis. If you can't take a step back and review that game as if it just came out in '91, than don't review it at all.

  • @Outlander11 Dude, Mark is a professional. He plays genesis games like rabbits eats carrots. The creators can put all the effort in the world to this game, but it will never be perfectly playable on the genesis. I mean, try to emulate it and look at the framerate. Learn to live with that.

  • @Outlander11 He isn't reviewing it like it just came out. Hell, he's comparing it to other Genesis games. It doesn't matter how much credit the creators get, if the Genesis isn't capable of handling this game than it cannot hope to stand the tests of time.

  • this game came with the genesis i just recently bought, but i only played it once in cockpit view and it was impossible!

i got thru the first 4 stages and put it down.

    it gave me a headache.

  • this game rules. if u mash all the buttons very fast and rapidly u can actually eject out of your own jet whenever you want

  • mig-29 and f-117 much better on genesis.

  • You could make the plane control more quickly by hitting B and C at the same time, which brought up an extra options menu.

  • Good game for the time, and one I got a lot of enjoyment from.

  • HAHA

I still remember when you crash, sometimes a glitch would cause the crashing sound to repeat everytime a note is hit in the intro song

  • So many memories!!!!

  • Although it hardly seems much cooler than F-18 Interceptor was when it first came in 1988 on Amiga, F-22 doesn't look too shabby if you wan't some technically 'advanced' crap for the Mega Drive, I suppose :P

  • omg i loved this game

  • I was never able to refuel or land without crashing. lol. Great game though, for '91 atleast.

  • i think Top Gun 2 for the nes has the better takeoff/landing animations. and its allot less slow

  • what they eject darn

  • True, this game was real crap. But I kept playing it for one reason - the F22. It was a very cool looking plane.

When I first heard about it being a REAL jet fighter a few years ago, I was stoked. And when it was featured in Transformers... Well, you get the idea.

  • oh, and the EA cartridge (the ones with the yellow tab on the side) I never remembered that release having such of a sluggish frame rate

  • LOL at 1:42 the bad guys ejecting!

But idk, I loved this game, and play it to this day.

  • dammit I remember this game a whole lot of different :S

a lot cooler and fun :S

    tho I was like 7 >.>

  • i let my friend borrow my genesis a few years back and he sold it without telling me!! :(

  • did u kick his ass?

  • Frame rate must be like 8.

  • @AlienComppany ...why would you think that? if it's anything like hard drivin, the "framerate" gets better when you pick up speed.

  • @AlienComppany Pretty good FPS =D

  • Well, it has cool graphics.

  • Wow this brings back memories of the all the genesis era simulators. 688 attack sub (actually that was a decent game) LHX attack chopper, and M1 Abrams. They were actual attempts at the simulation genre on consoles which is pretty rare these days. Of course if you had a pc you had it made, but if your parents didn't want to buy you a PC this fit the nitch.

  • wow, a real polygon-based 3d game for the genesis. no wonder that it has sluggish gameplay. this game should have been released on snes with an fx-chip

  • Genesis had good 3D Polygon shooters. It didn't need an FX-chip. F22 looks a lot worse than the genesis shooters.

  • can you recommend one? i don't know any

  • I love F-22. I play it on a genesis all the time.

  • Dang that's pretty impressive for the Genesis.

  • this reminds me of MIG 29 for Genesis

that game is very sluggish and sucks too

  • самая крутая леталка)

  • I believe that this game was ahead of it's time. I think if the makers of this game would've waited until the Dreamcast came out the game would've been much better.

  • Ahh, I love this game. The oversized EA cartridge irritated me, though.

  • Old times! i played this game a lot!

  • wow topgun for nes loks better

  • ASS!

  • avgn lol

  • Actually F-15 and F-19 for the PC had very smooth gameplay even on slower computers, a lot (and I mean a LOT) smoother than this. I also remember the controls to be surprisingly responsive and the gameplay to be really enjoyable. This thing looks more like a flight simulator on the commodore 64.

  • you know that's why they put the super FX chip in Super Star Fox.... witch is a game you REALLY should review for the super nintendo entertainment system... PLEASE REVIEW IT PLEASE!!

  • i had a mig29 sim on sega i think it was like in 1989 and it was waaaay better

  • I want to see this game run on an overclocked Genesis!

F-22 Interceptor was really ahead of it's time, and it is unfortunate that it came out so early, before Sega's SVP chip.

I have played this game until my thumbs hurt, long before the wonderful Ace Combat series on the Playstation.

  • That's an idea, with the overclock. I need to get that done...

  • Please share your results with us when you do!

  • I definitely will. It'll be a video showing two machines, side by side, playing the same game normal and OC. It'll be great.

  • when was the F22 came to place, i mean when was a simulation or model of the F22 started?

Cause the one on this game Looks like an F22-Raptor and this game was on 1991...

hmm time to check Wiki lol..

  • This game was never going to work well with the tech available. A tragic case.

  • lol you should stop using a dial-up connection then.

  • i don't, stupid

  • Well how am I supposed to know if you post crap? you're the stupid one.

  • the, huh? never knew their was only one stupid person, stupid.

  • Shut up stupid guy your stupidity is stupidly stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • you're = you are

your = the thing that belongs to you

your "stupidity is stupidity stupid." (this is correct)

you're (a.k.a. you are) "stupidity is stupidly stupid" (this doesn't make sense)

    You lose again stupid.

  • It seems HappySack2 passed elementary school unlike you.

  • Thanks for the help you made that guy delete all his comments.

    lol

  • This game is so bad, I'm giving it 5-stars! LOL It actually looked interesting back in the day....

  • lol thanxs for the answer

  • Virtua Racing on the Megadrive/Genesis had a special chip and had amazing 3D graphics for its time.. I feel this game should have had it as well.

Afterburner is not a valid comparison because its not true 3D and is really a 2D sprite game.

  • its 3d??!?!

  • yeah its amazing how far you could push the Mega Drive when you want.

but again , this runs incredibly slow so...... its not that good

  • Good old times with retro games, ......

  • that is why they put the super fx chip in super star fox

  • i use to play that game all the time it was really good back in the day

  • I have to disagree with this review. This is one of the best "flight" games on the Genesis, and I whole lot better than Air Diver. In Air Diver, every stage feels the same, but one has a lot more variety.

  • That cockpit view is epic.

  • No. That was the genesis first model. In countries like Britain or generally overseas, it was called the sega mega drive, and the USA had the genesis, exactly the same but the genesis was grey and the mega drive was red i do believe, i have the mega drive as im English, which also had 2 models.

  • Canada and North America had never a Mega Drive, they had a Genesis, the smaller model was called Genesis 2.

Japan, Europe, Australia and Brazil had the Mega Drive and the smaller one was called Mega Drive 2 (which I own)

  • I live in the USA so I have a genesis

  • Not the programmers fault. The genesis just didn't have the CPU power to do a polygon game like this.

  • You might get to a more playable framerate on an overclocked console, though in this case, I'm not sure that wouldn't screw up the Z80's coprocessing arrangement.

  • Not too bad a game, probably the best of the type on the console, a lot better than F-15 Strike Eagle II, or Mig 29, maybe EA's LHX as well. (and Hard Drivin/Race' Drivin')

Probably in part due to the fact that F-22 was a genesis exclusive an not a port, optimizing it pretty well, even with 3-button controlls. (though 6-button enhanced controlls would have been nice)

Also note, EA used the Genesis's Z80 as a coprocessor in tandem to help with some of the processing requirements.
