Holy smoke, I had a pair of shoes like this! I had forgotten about em... I can't have been more than nine at the time... but it came rushing back to me!
Instead of laces, they were secured by a leather-clad steel tongue, which you pried up with your fingers to loosen. Then when you had them on your feet, you just sort of popped the tongues down, with the sound of a rusty screen door closing. (At least MINE made a noise like that, thanks to all the sandlots I ran around in after school. X-D)

And the ironic thing is, the flagger shoes are literally squarer than his original round shoes. :)
