No, those weren't to keep the heat off of anybody. You probably know them better as "thrust reversers". Simply, the buckets (when closed) just redirect the exhaust in a more forward direction to rapidly decelerate the aircraft.
@azmab , That makes more since than my reflex comment, I never had seen that before or paid any attention to a jet aircraft engine, definitely the closest I have been. Thanks!
