I first replaced the bulb. It worked fine for about 20 minutes, then back to green and blue. Then replaced color wheel and TV worked fine for about 20 minutes, then back to green and blue. Any other advice would be appreciated.
Trying to determine if I have a color wheel, Ballast or some other issue. I removed my color wheel. It looked a lot better than the one in this video, but it did not spin as well. My lamp lights up. If I plug in my ps2 into the AV3 I can see it, and I plugged my laptop in via the VGA port. I had my PS3 in via HDMI and it was awesome for about 20 minutes, and then the color went out, things went nutty to noisy and shut down. I have a few videos posted on my you tube account.
my mom's tv is a similar tv like yours but its a 72in. tv and when it turns on its just a black screen, theres no picture or sound so the lamp indicator just flashes green on the bottom right side of the tv by the standby and timer button, do you think it might be the lamp, or does the color wheel might be a problem as well and what does the lamp code mean, I seen a sticker on the back of tv any suggestions you have would be helpful since she doesn't want to spend too much money too repair it.
This video worked fine for me....except now that I have everything all back together, the tv won't come on....it tries, ........blinking red lights... and tries, but then just shuts off... Any ideas what I did wrong? Thanks.
First of all to anyone claiming this video does not work....You either are not following simple directions correctly OR the issue with your television IS NOT the color wheel. I had a long time television repairman tell me the issue with my Samsung HLP5063 was the color wheel. After spending a reasonable $105 online plus shipping for a replacement color wheel for this TV I followed the exact directions in this video and my television now works exactly as it did the day it was purchased new.
Re my 61" DLP, mfg'd Jan 2005... ur video helped me replace the DMD board, (Ebay $99 frm SF, CA vendor). It's sad that Samsung "orphaned" this technology under 10 yrs. But in today's electronics mkt., "extended warranties" seem to define the usable/economical life of whatever we buy. The Samsung DLP was an engineering challenge from the outset. Here's to DIY geeks and parts via Ebay! BTW, "flambackbeat" was rt... remove jumper pin on DMD board.
Excellent video. Helped me tremendously. The thin ribbon wire from the color wheel to the board can be tricky when making the connection. Make sure the silver faced end of the wire faces the rear of the TV when making the connection. I connected mine backwards and the lamp wouldn't fire up. Also, the replacement color wheel is now an air suspention device and not ball bearing. There IS a jumper pin (CN810) that needs to be removed with needle nose pliers for the image to show properly.
Just got done replacing my color wheel, and my TV looks great, and only cost me about $130. Everything worked beautifully the first time. Thanks again.
Thanks for posting this. I didn't follow step by step, but it gave me confidence to finally rip apart my 61' Samsung DLP that has been sitting dormant for about 8 months. My color wheel was shattered, and there was glass everywhere in there. I spun what was left like you did, and it sounded like hell. I'll have my huge tv back, and get to move the bedroom TV back to where it belongs. Thanks Again!
Hey I just wanted to thank you for this excellent video for replacing the color wheel. I watched the video step by step and replaced my color wheel with relative ease. Without the video I wouldn't have known where to start so a HUGE thank you! I'm sure your video saved me a lot on money! again THANKS!!!
My grand pop samsung went blank the other day he said the tv would come on for two min then turn off but could still hear the sound. The service tech said it needs a color wheel and lamp. When the color wheel goes bad does it not make a weird sound. Should I just try and replace the lamp first?

@jcmence1488 Up to you if you do them at the same time or try and do one before the other. The lamp is an easy replacement to do (they both are really).
Great video! Thanks! Replaced my color wheel in less than an hour. Mine actually shattered so I removed pieces from the housing. This was extremely helpful!
Yes Thanks for the step by step directions...once I saw I had no problems jumping in to replace. Mine was shattered as expected. My TV is 6 years old Samsung DLP HL-RY266W. It only took me a short time to install...although when finished the colors weren't prefect as shading and reds off. Emailed supplies (bought for $85 on Amazon. Turn TV off I left cable box on on remote hit "mute-1-8-2 power. Select DDP1011 then index "delay" adjust til RED is uniform. Power off and back on all set!
@pesh115 I don't operate those websites so about all I can say is Google how to replace the color wheel in a Samsung DLP television (or something along those lines). That is what I did to find the sites in the first place.
@hexagontaginal Thanks for the pointer. A combination of your video and a posting on AVS Forum took care of me. Thanks a million for your video. After two tries (complete tear down and build back) it was working perfectly. With my luck, a subtle bump of my head to the back of the unit (plugging a cable in) and the unit just went out :( I futzed around (and four total hours later) i just gave up. Any thoughts? Suggestions?
@pesh115 Just take it apart again and check it. At this point you should be a pro. If you read through the comments from people you can see you aren't alone at having to go through a couple of times.
When you tried to turn it on, the back of the set was in place, correct? There is that safety switch that won't let the TV power up without the back of the set in place (or something else holding the switch down).
@hexagontaginal Yes, i checked the switch multiple times, it still won't show a picture. I hear fans spinning up, i think i hear the color wheel spin up, but the lamp just won't power up. The TV is stuck in a power-cycling mode trying to get the lamp to come on. I've tried a lamp that is about a year old and a new lamp (as of a week ago) and neither seem to work. Open to ideas.
Fantastic. Watched your videos through once ahead of time and then installed the new color wheel with the laptop handy to watch along again. One and done and now enjoying the peace and quiet of a new wheel. Thanks hexagontaginal and nice job!
None of you have mentioned the problem I have but I'm hoping that it is still the color wheel that is bad-my picture looks like an oil painting-so I have ordered a color wheel and will use this video to help me replace it
Thanks for this video Hex, I just replaced mine yesterday while watching your vid step by step. I don't think I would've been too comfortable doing it without your help:) It's now working perfectly. FYI, I DID need to pull that jumper that you mention at the end, so thanks for that too. I turned on the TV and the colors where all messed up. Then I remembered you talking about that jumper, some needing it, others not. Anyway, thanks for going to all the trouble for us :)
Thanks a ton for these videos. You have the same model television as me, so it was nice going through the steps with someone in real-time. My color wheel was shattered, which was an unwelcome surprise, but everything else went without a hitch. Save for the orphaned silver screw, I guess.
@MrChiRockk The on off button probably flashes a troubleshooting code when the set turns itself off. You can look up the code in the owners manual. If the set is buzzing it is probably the color wheel. There aren't a lot of moving parts in there to actually break.
@hexagontaginal it's flashing "Lamp & Standby/Temp"....i' m guessing it might be the fan not working properly???
Yea I was thinking the color wheel causing the buzz too but then I got the second problem which is the powering off......I'll see what I can do...thanks for the reply....
@hexagontaginal O.K. Thanks for the feedback.....I'm goint to replace the color wheel....hope I get it to work...I'm tired at looking at my 27 in Tube TV in the living room...ha...good thing my wife bought a 32 in flat screen that we have in the bedroom, at least I could watch the football games there...THANKS.
@hexagontaginal ....Finally got around to working on my TV...replaced the colorwheel...sure enough the old color wheel was broke...but the I think my lamp is no good now...TV powers on but no lamp...it just "Lamp, Lamp, Lamp" in the error code.....but I dont see or hear anything else working either.. no fans, colorwheel, anything......let me make sure everything is hooked up right and then probably order a new lamp...I dont see anything wrong with the lamp though.
Also, was the back of the TV back on the set before you turned it on? There is a switch that won't allow the TV to operate if the back isn't in place - unless you hold it down yourself.
@hexagontaginal yea its flashing Timer, Lamp/Standby?Temp so its probably more than likely the lamp ...I had replaced it like 2 yrs ago...it was working OK before the color wheel went bad..I guess during the process it went bad again.....oh well.....its only about $76 on the internet so I guess its worth buying it and ...hopefully that will solve the problem.....
@hexagontaginal Finally got my tv working...turns out I had the thin brown wire from the color wheel connected backwards...it wasn't making any contact at all...Thanks A Million.
All, just an update, while my color wheel was really buzzing, the TV would just shut off. This would happen when it was first turned on, and it would take about 6 times turning it back on before it would stay on. Since replacing the color wheel this no longer happens. I also had to reset my Verizon HD set top box to 1080i it had reverted back to 720p while the TV was disconnected.
You are the MAN! I got this TV 2 weeks ago for 50 dollars. I replaced the color wheel, flipped the copper ribbon around and BAM it works. Hell yes. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Good work. Just replaced the wheel in HLR6167W - the only trepidation I had was with the jumper for ball bearing vs air bearing type wheels Since the new wheel looked a little different than the one I was replacing, I was afraid we would need to pull the jumper out. The jumper was already out as far as we could tell. All looked fine without changing the jumper. Obviouosly YMMV.
Great video. I had the three blinking lites but had replaced my lamp about 9 months ago. I followed the video to see if the color wheel was damaged prior to ordering anything. Sure enough the wheel was in pieces. Replaced wheel. TV now tries to start a few times but no picture. Lamp does not come on and I get the three blinking lites again. Can the lamp be bad after 9 months also? I rechecked all the connections. Ordered the wheel from Samsung so I don't believe I need to remove jumper.
@tcartmel To all. I went ahead and replaced the lamp. Still no picture and same old three lights blinking at me. So I now have replaced the color wheel and lamp and still no picture. The color wheel spins sounding like it wants to start but after a few tries it quits with blinking lights. Does anyone have any suggestions? Besides maybe getting rid of the tv. Thanks.
@tcartmel I had the exact same issue you did. The likely solution is that the "ribbon" connector on the color wheel is connected backwards. It took me some time and research to figure this out, but you have to make sure that the metal connectors on the end of the ribbon are facing the back of the television as you slide the ribbon into the slot. If you put it in the other way, you get the three blinking lights on the front of the TV and your lamp won't light. Good luck!
Thanks for posting your video. Our DLP was making a buzzing sound like a plane crashing. Called a TV repair guy and they wanted $100 just to diagnose the problem! After reading on line I determined it was the color wheel. I bought one online for about $120. I watched your video, replaced the color wheel and it is working beautifully! We figure we saved close to $200! Very happy we were able to salvage the Samsung. Thanks again for posting!
Needless to say, the TV is apart and sure enough, the color wheel has just exploded. So a new one is on the way. Also bought a new lamp...a total of $175.
A couple suggestions for those trying this: 1) Move the TV onto a table or workbench for ease of work. 2) Mark any holes that use the brass screws with a red Sharpie. Put the screws in a zip tight bag. 4) Get a can of air to clean out the fans and such. 5) Take your time.
Our 2006 DLP just stopped working last night. I convinced my wife that it would be too expensive to fix and I was ready to head out to Best Buy to get a 55 inch LED when she showed me this video in the morning. Great video!
Great job with the video Hex, I did mine without a hitch.. I did find one useful short cut, if you can call an extra step a shortcut, lol... When removing the DVI cable, I found it much easier to remove the 6 screws holding on the connection cover. After the cover plate is removed that module can slide out some allowing easy access to the post screws that are a real pain to remove and pull out the cable.. Well worth the extra step, it will save you time and aggravation..
Thanks for this video. Just replaced mine and I all I want to do is watch the t.v muted and listen to the sweet sound of silence, and not the annoying buzz......Great job!!
I have a 61 inch DLP. I just moved and it started raining and it got wet. I let it dry for a few days, plugged it in, everything sounded normal during startup but the lamp light is flashing and nothing on the screen. Any idea?
Thank you so much!!!! Watched your videos twice before replacing color wheel. Had everything unassembled, replaced and TV working within 1 hour. Thanks again for taking the time to video and post. Bought second hand color wheel for $35. Big difference from $400 for professional fix! You are awesome. Owe you a beer if in Chicago area. Cheers mate.
I got it used on ebay. It took a week to ship but worked fine. I believe they normally go for around $80. Just type in USED SAMSUNG COLOR WHEEL in ebay and you should find it. Good luck.
wow Wow WOW! Thank you so much for posting this! I have he same set with the same problem, and followed along step by step with your repair. From start to finish it took 90 minutes, and my set no longer sounds like a jet engine. Worked the first time! You saved me several hundred dollars!
Huge thanks for posting this video! With the help of 2 other friends and your video we were able to remove and replace the color wheel in 2 hours. One last thing for anyone else... When you're all done...make sure you screw in the back cover before you test the TV. This may be obvious... but the TV wont come on without the back cover in place.
Great video. Thanks for putting this together. I followed the instructions step by step and can proudly say that the TV is working perfectly. I find it a little humorous that Part 1 of 5 has over 120K views and each part thereafter declines. The "I've got it from here" mentality at its best.
thanks for such a useful post, my son and I changed the color wheel after watching your video a few times as a warmup. you didnt leave a thing out. the few little heads up tips really prevented a disaster. Really thanks a lot.
Thank you for a) making this video and b) apparently having the same TV as me. The only difference was my color wheel did not have a cover to be removed separately. After watching your videos I was able to change out my color wheel with no mistakes or backtracking and so far it is working great!
I replaced the color wheel using the video, only problem i encountered was the correct placement of the ribbon cable. On my tv the cable contacts pointed to the back of the tv not the front. after this change the tv worked perfectly . thanks for posting this video
@wiinick90 i know what you mean having to type in the url in it kinda bugs me to, but i find it very hard to complain about it, because i VERY much appreciate this guy for posting this video telling where he got the instructions from.
I am surely glad I found this video. Had to refer back to it a couple of times.
Another thing went wrong with my DLP. It would only show one of the primary colors until I turned it off for a couple minutes. I fixed it by installing a computer fan thru the back of the TV toward the little fan over the cooling fins. Just spliced it into the wires to the little fan. Solved the problem
@wiinick90 man you kinda sound like an asshole, why are you complaining? this guy took the time to post a video up for free and you complain. sounds like an asshole to me.
I started following these directions but soon realized I didn't have the exact model of Samsung as here so I had to kind of work my way through it. It was nerve wracking putting the color wheel back in its place - I was so afraid of cracking it.
I initially plugged the ribbon cable plugged in backwards. I turned the cable around and tried again. This time it worked!
Awesome videos! I'm not ultra handy with this kind of stuff, but I was able to successfully replace the color wheel on my Samsung DLP in about 30 minutes this past weekend. One thing to note, I have a HLR5678WX/XAA. The brown and white wires referred to in the beginning of the videos was actually black and white in my TV, but it's in the same exact spot. Definitely give these videos a shot before calling a repair man. Following them to a tee saved me close to $300. Thanks, hexagontaginal!
Thanks!!! Do watch ALL videos before changing the color wheel. I put in an air bearing and this caused my picture to look blue! I went online and found that I needed to remove a jumper block from the circuit board. This did it!!! And no more color wheel noise. The picture is beautiful. Utube is the best! Thanks to you sir!!!
@albewill1 I think I have the same problem, received a service bulletin from samsung when I got my wheel, something about air bearing type color wheel and later production uses FDB type color wheel, where's is this jumper that needs to be removed? and how do I know what wheel they sent me, it's identical to the one I removed, with thanks, Kym email lawrencek1@sympatico.ca
I can't thank you enough for taking the time to develop this video series. I replaced the color wheel and voila, worked first time. Great tip about the switch on the back. It took me about 2 hours to follow your videos. Fixed the TV just in time for the Flyers game tonight. I do appreciate it very much. Can I offer a donation of some sort to you or you favorite charity as a token of my appreciation?
I can't thank you enough. If you hadn't taken the time and made the effort to film the replacement of your color wheel, I don't know if I would've attempted to fix/replace it myself.
The good news is that this worked like a charm!
The bad news is that I think I had my wife talked into getting a 3D TV. Oh well, 3D will have to wait for the time being.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Thanks to your detailed instructional I was able to replace the color wheel for far less than hiring somebody to do it for me or purchasing a new TV. Again, thank you very much!
You seem like you know what youre doing!! I have a Samsung HLR6168WX/XAA - 62 inch...it has a bright strip about and inch and a half wide from top to bottom on the left side (it looks like thats what the WHOLE picture is supposed to look like) and the rest is much darker. Do you think its the lamp or the color wheel?
Greetings, just have to say your instructional video is OUTSTANDING!!!!! You saved me so much time. Anyone looking to do the project, I encourage you to watch all 4 parts. As a side note, I did have to remove the "jumper block" after re-assembling the the tv and getting a blue hewed screen. Is there any way to know if your color wheel needs the jumper block or not?? Again, thanks a ton for your video. Spot on!!!
Got a Samsung 50in for free.. Friend said the color wheel was going bad.. finally replaced it. Works perfect! thanks a lot for posting these videos sir! I pretty much just got a 50in HD TV for $120 bucks (parts) and some elbow grease! Right on!
A BIG THANK YOU!!!! i followed your videos and completed the repair in 1 1/2 hours. I replaced the lamp and the color wheel for under $200. If anyone is considering whether or not they can do this, I say go for it. Not hard at all. TV worked beautifully,
Great help. I was able to change the wheel without a problem. I did have to go back in and remove the jumper ( reached through the small square hole under the paper label on the perforated metal plate with a hemostat and pulled it off) That fixed the blue green problem. Thanks a million ( or at least $400.00) TV is a 55" 2005 model.
i have a question. after about an hour or so my screen starts losing color still some patches of green in it though. i will turn the tv and let it rest for about 30 min and the color comes back for about an hour and so on and so on... is this a color wheel problem?
Thank you so very much! I got the part in yesterday and so far, so good. I called around and all of the repair shops wanted over $100 just to look at it. They won’t give you an estimate over the phone even though they know it’s likely a Color Wheel problem. This cost me $140 compared to a few hundred they would have charged me!!
The hardest part to do this is finding the right Color Wheel. Like others have posted, there is the “Ball Bearing” or “Air Bearing” version of this.
TV took a dump last week. Loud buzzing noise and then a distorted picture, then black screen. This video is AMAZING. Walks you through the process of changing out the color wheel. My friends and family thought I was nuts to try this myself but the video was well done with step by step instructions for even the novice to be successful. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together. Much appreciated.
Thanks! This video series was a TREMENDOUS help. My son and I changed the color wheel and lamp in a couple of hours with no problems. The picture is bright and NO MORE BUZZING sound!!! My TV was a HLP5663W. Lamp was BP96-00826A (got the whole housing), and color wheel was BP96-00674A. Bought both from Discount Merchant.
Awesome video. I replaced my color wheel with no problem. Thanks! You saved me alot of money. I spent $100 instead of $400. Thanks again keep up the good work.
Like everyone else, I want to thank you. I can't believe I repaired a tv. I could have done what you did, but I really believe it would have taken twice as long. Thanks!!!
Thanks a million hex! Repaired my TV w/ your repair videos guiding me every step of the way. I had an awful grinding sound followed by a humming sound with a black and white picture. Upon repair, I discovered that the color wheel had shattered into a million pieces. I guess that would explain the grinding noise followed by a black and white picture!
However please put the TV on a table/countertop/bench with some kind of towel or blanket. The idea, bring the work to you. Much easier and less stressful in the operator.
replaced colorwheel on tha parents Samsung DLP pedestal TV . THanks for giving me the moral support and marbles to operate. $130 bucks did it! Now we got a like new TV!
OMG i never thought i was going to be able to do it , the first time i tried it for some reason it was not working properly then i did everything again and BOOM it worked
OMG i never thought i was going to be able to do it , the first time i tried it for some reason it was not working properly then i did everything again and BOOM it worked
Followed your 5-part instruction and all worked perfectly. THANK YOU.
Also, I needed to remove the jumper you show at the end of Part 5.
In fact, there is a label on my circuit board housing above the access port to the jumper indicating the jumper position based on the type of color wheel (ball bearing or AIR bearing).
Thank you so much for your video. I just replaced my color wheel for Samsung DLP HLS4266W following your instructions. Took about 3 hours including cleaning the dust inside. Color wheel cost 85 bucks shipped from ebay.
Thanks your instructions were awesome. I watched your video's prior to getting the wheel, then when I had some free time I thought here goes. So I had the laptop close by and when I was stuck I would go back to the laptop and replay your videos.
You saved me over $500.00. So kudo's to you for putting this out on the web. Much appreciated.
Thanks for the video, the CW in my HLP4663W was screaming. Replace it using your video, with no errors, plugged it in, everything worked the first time, thanks again for going to the trouble making the video.
Thanks. That was a tremendous help. Did it in less than an hour. I had both my Samsung DLP & my Samsung LCD go at the same time. They are 4 & less than 2 years old. You saved me a lot of time, money, & aggravation. My next project is the LCD
Replaced color wheel and lamp after watching. didn't work at first because I had ribbon cable backwards. metal portion points to back of tv. TV is working and looks great now. thanks!!
Thank you. You made it so easy in the video.I changed the color wheel and tv works perfect. Samsung HLP4667WX 46"DLP The symptoms were, I was watching it and then tv made a banging noise and then colors went all wongy. I turned tv off and it wouldn't turn back on but made a humming noise.
Also, I contacted the Samsung people directly online via a live rep and they quoted me $88.95 for the color wheel, plus s+h I'm sure. Does that sound reasonable or is there a better place to go for one? Thanks again for the video and I will be letting you know how our repair goes.
Hi hexagontaginal, great informative video. We are looking into replacing the color wheel on our Samsung DLP TV and I had done the legwork on local repair prices when I came across your video. The local TV repair shop wants around $150 plus the cost of the wheel (which sounds more reasonable than some of the other quotes I've seen on here), but it's still money I'd rather save if I possibly can, otherwise it probably would be better to save up for an LCD.
HexagonTaginal - Great video. Thanks. After some sleuthing, I concluded that my color wheel had failed. While I have the Samsung HLR-5668W model, its very similar to what you have here (easier back panel, couple cables are located in slightly different locations..). Your video REALLY HELPED me to make the repair. The key thing that would have tripped me was the "connectorless" bronze ribbon cable, which you pointed out during your disassembly. I grateful for the time you took to make this!
man great work brother but i was thinking about getting this tv but i think its too much work... i might just save up for an lcd.. that way i dont have to go through these steps of dismantling a bomb like you are doing in your video
I have to say a big "Thank You"!!!!! We fixed our tv!!! We replaced the lamp and the color wheel...It did not work at first ,but we found ou that the flat wire piece that plugs has to have the metal to metal contact,we had it backwards, turned it around and Whola brand new TV for tonite Hawks Game!!!!! Thanks agin for showing us to do it ourselves.Best buy wanted $500-800.00 just for the lamp!!!We paid about $250.00 for color wheel and lamp....
Thanks for doing this video. My Samsung is an HL-R4266W- not exactly like yours, but close enough that your video made my change out easy and pretty fast. I found unscrewing the white DVI connector one of the most difficult parts due to limited space for getting a a flathead screwdriver in there to turn the connectors. Can I suggest that you include the model number of your TV?
my tv would have a scratch/gear grinding sound when starting up. it would last maybe 3-4 seconds and then stop. then the tv would operate fine after that. when i shut it down it would do the same thing.lasted a week, maybe 10 days and got louder and louder. now it does nothing and all three (lamp/timer/standby) lights started flashing on power button. does this sound similar to maybe the dryer buzzer noise some one described before? i hate to replace the color wheel if thats not the problem
The manual will tell you how to decode the lights on the power buttom but that is exctly what my color wheel did except mine lasted longer than 10 days. Looking back, I wish mine would have died after 10 days - it would have motivated me more to replace mine earlier.
Did some research before replacing my color wheel, you by far had the most informative and easy to follow instructional video. Thank you for sharing this information, it's AWESOM. This also allowed me to replace the lamp as those hours were racking up. With watching, pausing, and doing it.....took about 2 1/2 hours. I have heard that labor cost is around $300.00 for both, that's about $120.00 a hour, well worth the time spent! Thanks again for this wonderful tool.
Thank you for posting this! Used it yesterday, and it worked great. The only problem I had was one you also had in the video - mixed up screws at one point during reassembly.
Thanks for the video! I just fixed my 56" and the directions I found on the websites everyone seem to use didn't match up real well. Watching you made it easy. Thanks for taking the effort to document your repair. We owe you :)
GREAT video. I'm gonig to be ordering my color-wheel to replace it myself. Jotted down notes and have the video bookmarked. Was wondering if these instructions apply to the HLP6163W [?]
I haven't ever opened up one of the 6163s (only opened my own) but from what I know the proceedure should be the same. You can check the comments and see if anybody commented back about one of the 6163s,you will see there are a bunch of differnet makes listed. Texas Instruments developed the DLP technology and has the patents on it. I'm expect that all makes and models are very close to being the same because it is all liscenced technology. Post back how it goes for you
Thanks so much...worked like a charm...this mad it a breeze to do. Ran into no issues at all. I was a bit nervous about the jumper...wasn't sure if I would need to do anything with it, so I left it alone and all was good. Thanks for posting this...you are saving some average Joe's a bunch of cash.
THANK YOU!!! I called this "tv repair" guy to come over to check out my dlp, turned out to be the colorwheel buzzin. anywho he said that he would fix it for around 350 bucks. I said HELL NO, went on ebay bought the wheel for 45 bucks, watch your vids and fix it myself.
I replaced my color wheel and it worked when i turned on the tv, but....when i moved the tv in the family room from upstairs, the green screen streaks is back. When I unplug and plug back it works. Can anyone help please. Thanks
Add another happy camper. A few bumps along the road but now the picture is great. Ordered wrong color wheel. Chassis number is inside cabinet as was the color wheel part number. Took my time and lined up all the parts/screws as I took them out. Had to also pull the jumper and adjusted some brightness. Thank you for the video.
Ok i have the hls5086w and ive had it about 1 1/2 years and just recently ive had my window open there is a window behind my DLP i notice that my tv is not looking as bright as it use to but it still works fine its just not lookin like the high definitin TV i bought so i pull the lamp and notice it's kinda black when u look at the skinny piece in the bottom of the lamp..Like a light bulb is it kinda darker because of that blackness around that skinny glass piece in the middle of that bulb
You are money for putting this on you tube. I almost purchased a new lamp thinking that was the problem. Then someone said it might be the color wheel. I would have never been able to self diagnose with out your video. Followed your instructions and found my color wheel in pieces. Thanks for posting your video!!!
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!! i replaced the color wheel, and it seems to be working just fine, i have sound, but NO PICTURE at all. i have 2 new lamps and neither are working. i double checked the thin ribbon wire (even turned it around just for the hell of it), and still nothing. i tried a hard reset, and nothing. i have double checked all connections and everything seems good. the safety switch is also ok. anyone have any other ideas??? is there another common mistake that i missed?
You should go over all of your connections again and check them. Also, this is obvious but I'll say it anyway, make sure you are waiting long enough after you turn it on for the set to 'warm up' (for lack of a better term) and run through it's internal diagnostics or whatever it does.
I just replace my color wheel and lamp light (with brand new) and I am having the same problem. Only sound, no picture. I have seen other posts complaining of this problem, but no solutions. I sure am hoping someone who has had this problem can advise on how it was solved. Thanks!
i got my color wheel off e-bay for $88 total. it was at my door in 3 days. i know you didnt ask me, but i am here, so i may as well answer a few ?'s while i wait for help myself!!
what was the indication that it was the color wheel that needed replacing? i am experiencing problems with my dlp but am not sure if its the lamp or the color wheel. thanx
Thanks for making this video. It worked like a charm.

@MrPhord The blinking is a code telling you what is wrong. If you look in the manual it should tell you what the bink pattern actually means.

BTW, "flambackbeat" was rt... remove jumper pin on DMD board.
usbrasilcafe 1 month ago

Power off and back on all set!

pesh115 3 months ago
@pesh115 I don't operate those websites so about all I can say is Google how to replace the color wheel in a Samsung DLP television (or something along those lines). That is what I did to find the sites in the first place.
hexagontaginal 3 months ago
@hexagontaginal Thanks for the pointer. A combination of your video and a posting on AVS Forum took care of me. Thanks a million for your video. After two tries (complete tear down and build back) it was working perfectly. With my luck, a subtle bump of my head to the back of the unit (plugging a cable in) and the unit just went out :( I futzed around (and four total hours later) i just gave up. Any thoughts? Suggestions?
pesh115 3 months ago
@pesh115 Just take it apart again and check it. At this point you should be a pro. If you read through the comments from people you can see you aren't alone at having to go through a couple of times.
When you tried to turn it on, the back of the set was in place, correct? There is that safety switch that won't let the TV power up without the back of the set in place (or something else holding the switch down).
hexagontaginal 3 months ago
@hexagontaginal Yes, i checked the switch multiple times, it still won't show a picture. I hear fans spinning up, i think i hear the color wheel spin up, but the lamp just won't power up. The TV is stuck in a power-cycling mode trying to get the lamp to come on. I've tried a lamp that is about a year old and a new lamp (as of a week ago) and neither seem to work. Open to ideas.

I have a Samsung DLP 46 inches...it makes a buzzing sound and then it powers off....any ideas?
MrChiRockk 5 months ago
@MrChiRockk The on off button probably flashes a troubleshooting code when the set turns itself off. You can look up the code in the owners manual. If the set is buzzing it is probably the color wheel. There aren't a lot of moving parts in there to actually break.
hexagontaginal 5 months ago
@hexagontaginal it's flashing "Lamp & Standby/Temp"....i' m guessing it might be the fan not working properly???
Yea I was thinking the color wheel causing the buzz too but then I got the second problem which is the powering off......I'll see what I can do...thanks for the reply....

MrChiRockk 4 months ago
@MrChiRockk @MrChiRockk @MrChiRockk @MrChiRockk Did you look in the owners manual to see what the trouble code for the blinking light means?
Also, was the back of the TV back on the set before you turned it on? There is a switch that won't allow the TV to operate if the back isn't in place - unless you hold it down yourself.
hexagontaginal 4 months ago
@hexagontaginal yea its flashing Timer, Lamp/Standby?Temp so its probably more than likely the lamp ...I had replaced it like 2 yrs ago...it was working OK before the color wheel went bad..I guess during the process it went bad again.....oh well.....its only about $76 on the internet so I guess its worth buying it and ...hopefully that will solve the problem.....

Thanks again Hex!!!!

Ordered the wheel from Samsung so I don't believe I need to remove jumper.
tcartmel 6 months ago
@tcartmel To all. I went ahead and replaced the lamp. Still no picture and same old three lights blinking at me. So I now have replaced the color wheel and lamp and still no picture. The color wheel spins sounding like it wants to start but after a few tries it quits with blinking lights. Does anyone have any suggestions? Besides maybe getting rid of the tv. Thanks.
tcartmel 6 months ago
@tcartmel I had the exact same issue you did. The likely solution is that the "ribbon" connector on the color wheel is connected backwards. It took me some time and research to figure this out, but you have to make sure that the metal connectors on the end of the ribbon are facing the back of the television as you slide the ribbon into the slot. If you put it in the other way, you get the three blinking lights on the front of the TV and your lamp won't light. Good luck!

Hey Hex,
Thanks for posting your video.
Zoll72 7 months ago
Needless to say, the TV is apart and sure enough, the color wheel has just exploded. So a new one is on the way. Also bought a new lamp...a total of $175.
A couple suggestions for those trying this: 1) Move the TV onto a table or workbench for ease of work. 2) Mark any holes that use the brass screws with a red Sharpie. Put the screws in a zip tight bag. 4) Get a can of air to clean out the fans and such. 5) Take your time.

Totally saved my arse! You are a hero amongst us all! It was quite easy in the end... new bulb and new color wheel = new TV!

Thanks again, great job

Thanks for the post!

my tv would have a scratch/gear grinding sound when starting up. it would last maybe 3-4 seconds and then stop. then the tv would operate fine after that. when i shut it down it would do the same thing.lasted a week, maybe 10 days and got louder and louder. now it does nothing and all three (lamp/timer/standby) lights started flashing on power button. does this sound similar to maybe the dryer buzzer noise some one described before? i hate to replace the color wheel if thats not the problem
jbfromtexas 1 year ago
@jbfromtexas Sounds like the color wheel to me.

GREAT video. I'm gonig to be ordering my color-wheel to replace it myself. Jotted down notes and have the video bookmarked. Was wondering if these instructions apply to the HLP6163W [?]
combizs 2 years ago

FeLLoNeY 2 years ago
You are money for putting this on you tube. I almost purchased a new lamp thinking that was the problem. Then someone said it might be the color wheel. I would have never been able to self diagnose with out your video. Followed your instructions and found my color wheel in pieces. Thanks for posting your video!!!

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!! i replaced the color wheel, and it seems to be working just fine, i have sound, but NO PICTURE at all. i have 2 new lamps and neither are working. i double checked the thin ribbon wire (even turned it around just for the hell of it), and still nothing. i tried a hard reset, and nothing. i have double checked all connections and everything seems good. the safety switch is also ok. anyone have any other ideas??? is there another common mistake that i missed?
sdkammeyer 2 years ago
You should go over all of your connections again and check them. Also, this is obvious but I'll say it anyway, make sure you are waiting long enough after you turn it on for the set to 'warm up' (for lack of a better term) and run through it's internal diagnostics or whatever it does.
hexagontaginal 2 years ago
Also, I saw your comment below about getting the color wheel off of Ebay. I'm assuming that it was new when you purchased it.

I just replace my color wheel and lamp light (with brand new) and I am having the same problem. Only sound, no picture. I have seen other posts complaining of this problem, but no solutions. I sure am hoping someone who has had this problem can advise on how it was solved. Thanks!
