  • Magnificent the way this tears away at the emotions. You want to help someone, but the only person who can help one is oneself.

  • yes i 2 seen this on unsung;it's so so deep .

  • I am watching Unsung .. great history and music!

  • SINGING ABOUT MY SON?

  • takes me WAAYYY back... miss those times

  • Love this song ...

  • Gone Bobby W....K.C. really took after his uncle Bobby...

  • I dedicate this song to Rufus Crosby because he is Harry Hippie!!! irresponsible man

  • This is the type of song that brings back good memories , this type of music puts you in a good mood when EVERYTHING is going wrong , if you listen to this then you just should have a smile on yor face , Im 12 and Im not saying theres anything wrong with the music today Im just saying if everyone listen to this song I'm pretty sure drama would not be so intense but like I said Im not a goodie goodie because I do normal teenage stuff but I also fund a place in my life for this type of music

  • THIS SONG IS DEDICATED TO MY ONLY 1 UNCLE PAUL ALVES, WE LOVE YOU, AN WE MISS YOU SO MUCH..........................LOVE YOU, SHORTY

  • This song brings me back to when I was younger my mother use to play this song while we were in the car. I miss those days!

  • PatBooks it was never a DIS 2 black woman! It was my opinion of wat his situation might be! I can agree with wat u said about the choices woman make when choosing a man or Vice Versa! I a all to well known fact that this can & does happen & either 1 is right because the child doesnt benefit from just 1 parent as well as both sharing loving & caring for a child! THAT IS ALL!

  • Sorry harrie

  • This song, makes me cry I just lost the man who was like my father we used to sing this song every morning when he dropped me off at school. This is one memory I will always cherish when it comes to him <3

  • It describes in my Opinion alot of black men lost on the beaten path from wat keeps them from being family men! Maybe the Wife is to my pressure to deal with so he turns to the street, drugs & or alcohol instead of taking the money home to his family! So many Harry Hippy on the South side of chicago & all over America. Thanks Bobby!

  • @MrBubbagump74 The Black woman gets blamed again. Most women don't complain for nothin'. It's a lot of work and pressure on the woman to have to continually remind a grown man of his responsibilities. Women also must be careful who they mate with. A lot of desperate women take on losers and then bitch and moan about it later.

  • @PatsBooks desperate woman,and a loser......not much of a difference

  • I KNEW A MAN LIKE THIS ONCE....YOU CAN'T HELP THEM AND YOU WILL DROWN TRYING TO SAVE THEM...I ALMOST DROWNED...SORRY HARRY YOU'RE JUST TOO MUCH WEIGHT TO CARRY AROUND....BUT I AINT GON FRONT HARRY WASNT ALWAYS DOWN AND I LOVED HIM BUT I LOVED ME MORE....

  • loveitloveitloveit....love bobby to!

  • Is Bobby still with us??

  • @Saratogamiss yes

  • @Saratogamiss very much so!

  • my dad says this song is about his brother who was on herione love this song so much

  • @loufilma123 not true, watch a documentary on him called Unsung on TV1.

  • Dats right I watched it lastnight. That song was something I grew up on.

  • @1goldbaby, not true at all, stop making things up, bobby didn't write this song at all! It was a country song written by a country artist!

  • He was stabbed by his wife(girlfriend), and bobby had already been singing this song before his brother's death!

  • Damn I love this song!

  • Bobby brother was stabbed to death by his girlfriend in Bobby Womack house. NOT beaten to death.

  • He just said on Unsung that the song is not about his brother. A country singer gave him the song and he put an r&b twist on it.

  • I was watching unsung.

  • whose watching Unsung?

  • I remember this song! and "i would walk around all day long singing this song!!!!"

Sha na na na Sha na na naaaaa naaaa naaaa, Aw yeah....

  • Harry is just like my brothers. If you down put them down, they will drag you down.

  • WELL THAT SONG IS SO TRUE NOW WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO JUST MAKE SIGN'S FOR MONEY.

  • Bobby wrote this song about his Brother. (for real) You can't help someone that "likes being on the ground. Peace to all.

  • @buchananjosalyn This song was not about his brother. It was orginally intended to be a country western song written by a country artist. Check on Unsung on TVONE for the next showing of Bobby Womack.

  • @sheilaagnew4 Hi ! "Jim Ford wrote this song for Bobby Womack who sang it as a "Tribute to his dead brother ( and guitarist) Harry Womack. Harry was beaten to death in Bobby's apartment. Check "bio" Bobby Womack" ASK. com. That is what was written there. Thanks

  • @buchananjosalyn Thanks for your feedback Josalyn. True Jim Ford did write this song and Harry Womack was killed by his girlfriend in Bobby's home. The song was written prior to Harry's death and it was not about him. Harry used to claim it while they were performing on stage and Bobby went along with it as a part of the act which made people believe the song was about Harry Womack. This came straight from the source, Bobby Womack himself. Check your local listing for UnSung, TV One.

  • @buchananjosalyn HE WAS STABBED BY HIS GIRLFRIEND AFTER SHE FOUND ANOTHER WOMAN'S UNDERGARMENT...THEY WERE ARGUING AND SHE STABBED HIM!!!!

  • @buchananjosalyn I'M WATCHING UNSUNG NOW, AND THE SONG WAS WRITTEN FOR HIS BROTHER!!!!PAY ATTENTION!!!

  • Go Bobby!

  • i like this song. i too couldn't stand "old folks" music as a kid. lovely ,great music...

  • Just heard it again on WBLK for the first time in years. LOVE it!! One of the best soul songs of all time!

  • @shanealtenstad Hello. Is that WBLX in Mobile? If so, hello hommie.

  • Real soul music, bluesy and down to earth.

  • Damn he was down on his Luck!!

  • This remimds my wife of her father ....Harry!!

  • love it was 1 of ma favourites in the 80`s

  • this song was written for his brother who was a drug addict this song reminds me of my brother he loves this song... this is for all the drug addicts... sorry harry thank im gonna put you down...

  • your right its a spirit lifter.. Bobby had that way about his music, i found it all made me feel happy...thank you Bobby Womack!!!!

  • These day's kid's don't play outside at home like they used to. video games with 38 year dad's not working, NO job's with kid's that are 18. What a mess we have gotten ourselves into. Neighbor's that don't know each other as in the old day's (60's-70's) when if you did something wrong as a child and your neighbor caught you you got your ass whipped & when Dad or Mom found out you got it again.

  • Look up Marc Broussard's version! He did an amazing job on it!

  • i am 63 and i love bobby womack and this is one of my favorite songs by him!!! thanks soso much for posting this and it has great sound quality!!! thanks again!!!!

  • DEEP ASS SONG !!! SHA LA LA LA LA LA LA !! CLASSIC SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE HARRY HIPPIES !!!!!!!!!

  • I'm waiting for history to repeat itself again, so music like this can come back in some way, shape, or form.

  • this is an incredible song , moves me in so many ways...thanks Bobby.

  • they don't make artists like they did back in the old days...

  • Hey Bobby what happened to Sam Cooke and why did you marry his wife 3 months after Sam was murdered???

  • i love this song, im 25 and been listening to this since i was a lil one, it brings back so many good thoughts

  • this is a story of his lost brother. kevin1278, i hope someone in your family never goes thru the things in life that make them give on everything

  • @dvnci2002~I do have people like that in my family. It's annoying.

  • He's describing crackheads across the country. Hanging out at the gas station bumming for dollars. Get a fucking job...

  • @kevin1278 kev, there's a classic saying: there but for the grace of God go I. I hope you should never fall, or worse yet, see a loved one crash and lose their way. Crack was a tsunami of plague, ravaging the streets of every city. And, bobby's just telling the story, and he's not going easy on harry, brother or not. It's cool, but "get a fucking job" don"t work. We all know bums, but this is a hard working people in the USA.

  • close to being the greatest song of all time. he is the POET. three devastating verses and a lullaby melody to sing along. stay with us Bobby

  • @bry3921

Couldn't have put it any better...those verses will floor you! Love this song.

  • I heard this song for the first time today.Wonderful.I lived thru the hippie thing in Haight-Asbury,burned my draftcard, protested the Vietnam War,saw Kent State,Martin's murder, sold underground newspapers, went to a lot Grateful Dead shows, hitchhiked all over the west coast, and came out on the other side. The comments were great!.Thanks for posting this great song.

  • For lovers of old skool classic soul music check out this tune = OH HONEY by DELEGATION = it's awesome :)

  • I LOVE YOU BOBBY WOMACK ALWAYS AND FOREVER THIS IS REAL SOUL

  • MUSIC SOUL THIS IS IS. PLEASE BELIEVE THIS IS REAL SOUL. LOVE YOU BOBBY!!!!

  • @DaOrigTruthSeeker: That's the straight up truth you told right there. You couldn't have made it any simpler. It is what it is..thats not being racist. I hear the music today and i can't identify with it. This generation of music is the first that i can't feel and i am not that old. Good music should move you no matter what generation it comes from. Today's music is lacking soul and that is why people can't get deep into it. Fact is,if it ain't broke don't try to fix it. Be true to your culture.

  • go bobby

  • I've always loved this tune :)

  • yes sir a nice song very classic good for the soul peace

  • Next to Sam Cooke, Bobby Womack is my all time favorite artist. I can see why they were friends....

  • Go!! Mr. Bobby Womack!! luv you!!

  • im 26 and this is my favorite song.......My momma an OG from Chitown so yea Im oldies but goodies....I love this......and some people dont know this is a true story....

  • Amazing

  • I played this song over and over as a teen, I think the flip side of the 45 had Sweet Caroline another beautiful song

  • What the young people of today in the music industry don't understand is that they have abandoned the very thing that makes them unique. They need to go back to their roots and study men like Bobby W,Teddy P,Barry W and on and on. Trying to crossover is causing you to get lost in other cultures but you are forgetting who you are. Your music will relfect that...so never forget. Black Soul Music is the sweetest music on earth and i don't mean that to be a racist. Go back to our roots, you can do it.

  • @DaOrigTruthSeeker .you speak the truth .theres no need to use the word racist, as a white soul boy (maybe thats racist) lol .the artists that you mention and many more were my 'daily bread . raps ok but most want to be gangsters .got 2 girls aged 20 and 11 but both know luther ,bobby w,barry (mainly cos of my wife )motown, aretha ,dusty springfield ,sam cooke and others .music just doesn't get any better than this

  • @DaOrigTruthSeeker

    Tell It!

  • Aww shit! Sang it!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • its funny - my grandma used to play this song when she wasn't feelin too good. It always put a smile on her face, and she told me if I listened, it would make me smile too. I used to hate this damn song, and I'd cover my ears when she'd play it. Here I am tho - 15 years later, listening to this song, smiling. Funny how she always seems to know what I need, even when I don't. I love you Nana, always will. Glad to still have you in my life!!

  • One of the best songs ever made, and everybody knows a "Harry Hippie" #classic

  • man u can feel it when he sings.....so much soul is unreal.....gotta love it

  • i'm 63 and i agree with breezybee123ful ( who has great taste in music). the young artists out there today have great, beautiful voices, but the music just doesn't compare to the older soul music that i was fortunate enough to grow up with. when i heard R kelley's WHEN A WOMAN LOVES, i was so ex!cited! i'm just hoping the others will follow!! and Breezy, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your taste in music-you have great taste!!!! thanks so much to nyseamex for posting!!!!

  • @dogcat126 I must agree Wholeheartedly.....I'm 48....Sam Cooke...Otis Redding...Bobby....etc etc....It ISNT the VOICE....It's the SOUL......The feeling....Todays " Stars " for the most part just cant "feel" a song like the Giants of the industry did....

  • my man loves this song and now this is my favorit song to get my man in the mood by playing this song and i love it and him so much!!!

  • every 1 knows a harry hippie

  • i kno you cant knock a man when hes down but damn, nobody can hold your hand threw life, its up to you to wana do better for your self

  • This song reminds me so much of my uncle Malcome! I love and miss you so much! R.I.P. I'm 40 now and really miss our fishing trips on the lake in New Orleans.

  • THIS SONG IS THE EPITOME OF WHAT LIFE WAS IN THE 70'S FOR MANY OF OUR BROTHER THAT SERVED IN THE VIETNAM WAR. MY HUSBAND IS A VETERAN AND I WATCHED FOR YEARS WHAT WAS DONE TO THEM. THEY WERE NEGLECTED AND HAD A SENSE OF HELPLESSNESS. IT TOOK ALMOST THIRTY YEARS FOR MY HUSBAND TO GET HELP AND TO GAIN HIS SELF ESTEEM. I JUST WANT TO SAY TO ALL THOSE BROTHERS KEEP THE HOPE!

  • @Dladyist I agree 100% I'm 46 years old and I remember The aftermath, The Energy crisis gas lines and Watergate(Tricky Dick) It was the Vietnam war that made me realize I would never go to war for this country. After seeing how they treated those cats and they fought a war they didnt start or have anything to do with and the US couldnt treat them any better then that?! That was my cue right there to never fight in a war unless we were being invaded, then I would take up arms, not for money or oil.

  • @mookeychase0907 Good for you! I don't believe in the wars of today, not taking anything from the brave men and women who serve now, but the reasons we get ourselves into these war only leave us open to the threat of anniliation. And also the USA is not as innocent as they claim. I love my country, and i would fight to defend her! But it would be only to protect our lives in eminent danger!

  • @Dladyist Oh yeah I know this, the US is one of the grimmiest countries on the globe and will have some consequences to pay some day for the way we treat our own citizens past present and other countries we've destroyed corrupted or taken over. Nice chattin with you and I m glad your husband came around I know drug addition and other ills that plagued Viet Nam vets are not easy to overcome may God bless you and him ;-)

  • @mookeychase0907 Just one more thing, I am 51 and i caught the tail end of the civil rights days, I just wish our young men and woman could truly understand what sacriffices were made so they can now live the life they live without feeling like thew lowest things on earth . Thank God we prevailed, there is still work to do "Especially" now that Obama is president and we see it rear it's ugly head again Thank you for listening and may God bless you too!

  • @Dladyist Agreed thanx ;-)

  • @Dladyist I'm glad your husband is well now.

A big thank from me to him for his service.

    God Bless Al

  • @njal1029 Yes, he is doing fine, God bless him to overcome the exposure to the Agent Orange and now is will be compensated for the many years he has suffered from the chemical. If anybody from that era needs help reply to me and i can put them in contact with a lawyer that has worked wonders. But be careful of companies like rep-for vets, i waited over ten years just to be heard from. Yes, the money will be good but it does not make up for the suffering that my husband has had.

  • @Dladyist My Uncle says he was exposed and Im not sure he is getting the right information, He has been making trps to the VA Hospital now every month. I'm worried for him.

  • @312Jg Someone needs to go and make sure that your uncle is getting the proper care. my husband was going every week and nothing was being done, matter of fact they were treating him for something he did not have(good thing i am a nurse) I blasted their asses. Through a friend of mine i found Alpha freedom disability to work with, they are wonderful and they care about the Veterans, you can find them on line. My husband is now waiting for his money. don't use REP FOR VETS. CONTACT ALPHA!

  • @312Jg P.S. if you decide to use ALPHA FREEDOM DISABILITY ASK FOR MR. WARREN MOLEE HE'S GOOD!!!!

  • @Dladyist Thank you sooo much! My mom has already figured out they were diagnosing and medicating him for things that didn't seem right to her. She made him call them on it! I will let Him know about the info asap and my mom, she helps him so much because she cared for my Grandpop and had to do her own research behind the doctors and discovered they were over medicating him! A dozen different meds, come on! Again Thank you and God Bless you!!!

  • @312Jg GOOD FOR YOU! I HOPE EVERYTHING WORKS OUT BECAUSE ALL VETERANS, ESPECIALLY VIETNAM VETERANS DESERVE TO BE TREATED SPECIAL. TELL YOUR MOM TO STAY ON THOSE DOCTORS

  • I'd like to help a man when he's down

But I can't help ya Harry

If you wanna sleep on the ground

Sorry, Harry, you're too much weight

    To Carry around

But he still walks around all day singin' this song

Sha dah dah dah sha nah nah nah nah

Nah sha lah lah lah lah dah dah dah

  • I was visiting my homeboy 2day, he was listinin' to pandora. I was tryin 2 git sum rest then this "beautiful gem" came on.... I neva heard it b4,,, im 34 by tha way, on the second verse I jumped up and said "WHO THA FUCK SINGS THIS"??? he told me,,,,, my nu fav song!!!!!!

  • alot of people dont know good music when they hear it old school songs have alot of meaning to them you just have to listen to them

  • This song makes me cry! BUT I LOVE IT!

  • My father and uncle introduced me to this song. I loved it instantly..but I never knew the true meaning of it until I was unemployed with no job in sight,my ex had used me up and we broke it off, and bills were due and no money to pay for them. I used to cry and listen to this song feeling just like Harry Hippie. But now I got a good paying job and I'm feeling like I'm on top of the world. Thanks Bobby for helping a brother get thru those tuff times. Timeless Classic

  • this song is for those men & women are suffering from

laziness, with no self esteem and with no where to go

  • One of the greatest songs i ever heard

  • @1965rbrown u not wrong

  • u know how people say "u weren't even thought of" when they make reference to a time before u were born? well i think i was thought of around the 60's or 70's for real cuz I prefer music like this over this bullshit we have today and I'm only 24....this kinda music has substance-it's timeless and will continue to blare outta old souls ipods and music players alike for years to come...big ups Mr. Womack...#keeprealmusicalive

  • tune.

  • Its a song about life. You've got a good mind, that;s why you love it.

  • just gotta put this out there,...people on here are always sayin today's music blah blah blah, I'm only (enters age) years old blah blah blah...damn STFU, back in the day they made music that was sexual and about drugs too, just as today they also make good, meaningful, and feel good music, shitty music is shitty music and good music is good music, no matter what the era...damn

  • @LivinNTheSouth I think you're missing the point. It's true that bad songs were made back then but most all songs made then had meaning and substance. They often spoke of trials, tribulations and true life circumstances. 90% of today's music is about clubbing, blinging, "drop it like it's hot", shake your booty, getting laid, ect. It has nothing positive to enrich your life or to make you think about important issues. Its all about making a good beat today and no real talk that will help someone

  • I just discovered this song today. I cant stand the music of today. Too sexual, too violent, too much drugs, etc.... and it all sounds basically the same. It is truly the devil`s music lol. This is a great song. The music of the past was better in all areas. Way more dynamic. Too bad im only 22. Cant find others my age into oldies......

  • They don't make music like this anymore. Music that had heart and soul. It was something that they wanted to share with others. Today, music is just made to line people's pockets. It has no meaning no life, and no direction....

  • I think of my grandpa when I hear this song....miss you papa Joe!

  • Bobby hit #31 in Billboard, 2-10-73. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • to prettygirl14587-so sorry for your loss. my daddy died a long time ago and i miss him so much-i was daddy's girl and he was my guy! i'm 63 and just lost my grand nephew a few weeks ago. he was only 7. hang in there. i love this bobby song. thanks to the poster-this is one of my favorite bobby womack songs.! thanks again for posting!!!!

  • It's amazing how a song can instantly bring you back to a certain time in your life or almost bring someone back to life and place them right next to you. Music is the ultimate healer

  • This was my grandpa's song.. I miss him he passed like 2 weeks ago ):

  • I miss my grandpa ):

  • @prettygirl14587 Hey i truly feel you reaaly i do. I remember going back home to Louisana visiting my grandparents and my granddad would ride back with us this was in 60's and 70's and when my granddad i felt like my whole world had come to end he was my hero and friend but mostly my grandpa we call him daddy he has 32 grands and love us all the same but i loved him the most and like you i miss daddy my grand pa,,,,thanks for sharing!!!

  • thanks so much for posting! i love bobby womack and this is one of my favorites. i read the comment from theshadowstalker13 about coming home from viet nam. my first husband was in the navy and their ship was right off the coast of da nang-they did get hit but my husband{thank god}was just wounded from some shrapnel. i know it must have been hard for you over there! glad you are ok as it devastated so many of our young soldiers and they never recovered. i just pray they are ok now!!!

  • this song is made for my brother and i fell bad for him i try 2 help him but harry hippie will only help harry hippie.

  • I think of my mother when I hear this song… Boy, did she have a really big heart; she believed that she could help or save the world or just about anyone who needed help (I guess that’s why I’m the way I am)… This was her favorite song when I was a child, man she couldn’t hold a note, but I loved to hear her sing it (in the early 70’s); thanks for posting it…
