The amazing Jo Stafford and the great era she was apart of are undoubtedly irreplaceable but 'todays' era is filled with just as much talented artists, you just have to wipe the top layer of advertised shit off and start digging a little before you start to find them.
Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and JO STAFFORD ... it doesn't get any better. There have been many exquisite singers over the decades, but these three are special. A lot of singers cover songs. Jo's bell-like voice could, like the other two, capture any genre, any song and make it her own. Here she reflects a sexual innocence. This was the signature song for another fabulous singer of that era - Margaret Whiting. But you wouldn't know it listening to Jo's incredible interpretation.
@casey6151 Agree totally. I always thought Margaret Whiting's version of this song was the definitive one, but Jo's version is my favorite. Amazing performance from a truly amazing artist.
My favorite line in this song is: "Gimme dat ole time religion! It's good enuff for me. Without yer new affliction, don't need yer new restrictions. Gimme dat ole time religion, it's good enough for me."
i love this song and jo stafford , no one like her today , when i hear this music , i feel so sad at what passes for music today , 99% of it is crap today , come on young folks , let's step up to plate !!!! jo is a goddess !!!!!
All these Jo Stafford songs make me fell united with my mom who died last year. My heart was broken when my mom died. I am 58,but I want to keep my mother's memories alive. Thank you so much for music. It is appreciated. None of us would be here today without the soldiers of WW 2.
I own her album Ski Trails and this song is my absolute favorite--inherited the record many years ago from my parents who loved her voice too--she was a legend!!!
I want to know more about Jo Stafford -- this is my favorite version - just breathtaking. Thank you so much for posting this. This era was when romance was king -- people sang poetry, not rap. Singers were true artists. Thanks again.
@torchsongsinger well i'm going to sample this because people of my generation are great at taking the artistry of others and turning it into our own.. and you're going to hate it. also, i'd appreciate it if youd stop making ignorant, generalized statements about a genre of music that has touched my heart and soul more than even this beatiful song.
growing up in teen age years of the 1950,s jo staffod was so poular, but i recently got to appreciate her rare talet recently passed hres was a rare talet and could make any song distinct. i,m sorry for this generation for have missed her, one of a kind when d,j,s still played ''good'' music
Jo Stafford is the great aunt of Laurie Deane, who has a voice just like her Aunt Jo. If you ever get a chance to hear Laurie Deane in person, don't miss it!!! There are videos on YouTube of Laurie, but none of them have the sound quality that does her voice justice. Laurie is amazing, voice of an angel, her Aunt Jo.
He wasn't talking nonsense. There's some superb people singing, teachining, playing and *creating* music like this - of all ages. Most of them are lucky if they don't have to work day jobs, let alone work for a pittance in very small venues, and selling recordings at their gigs, if they have any. They're not on the radio or tv. You have to seek them out. I suspect part of their problem is too many people saying such music doesn't exist anymore and staying home. ==
I've been a fan of Jo Stafford ever since.. .way back when, but every time I listen to her songs I am thrilled like I was when i first heard her sing. Just fantastic!!

I certainly wouldn't argue with dewey44. When you listen to this rendition it is clear that thw late Ms Stafford ranks with the very best singers of her own,or any other generation.
Well... I agree... but only partially... She'd have to share 1st. place with Doris Day and July London...
I like those singers who sang crisp and clear... no embellishing... just understated singing... making it seem so effortless, but, is in fact really difficult! A smooth voice... an orchestra or cocktail combo with one of those ladies singing in a taffeta A-line dress ... a Martini in front of you... a view of Manhattan at night... and voilà... a Technicolor 1950's film plays in your head!
Ms. Stafford is the best female exponent of the Great American Songbook-period. I know I'll get a lot of flak for this comment, but I don't care. Thank you for posting.
No flak from me! I love her, and indeed, she was one of the greats of her era. The great Jo Stafford was classically trained to be an opera singer which is evidenced in her perfect pitch and effortless range.
Perfect 10 in both categories.
And the unique timbre of her voice, the divine feeling her voice emits, and her impeccable phrasing are also evident.
Perfect 10 in all 3 categories.

In essence, no singer, past or present, can possibly be better.
The most any singer could be or aspire to be is equal to Jo Stafford.
And on that level, all comparison ceases.
The question then is: who do you prefer?
