Part of the reason his swing isn't "on the same plane" throughout the swing is because the perspective of his swing isn't directly behind his hands. It's more at his shoulders, which is skewing the perspective of his plane not being on the same plane throughout the back swing.
This is a great analyst, thanks. It's cool you can do swing instruction personally via emailed video. Since this is for professional purposes also, might I suggest you go for a better cleaner audio quality. Your voice is much too muffled & quiet.. Louder voice, less background noise/fuzz! Also I agree you're repeating too much & not moving quick enough from point to point. It gets monotonous. You could condense this to 1/2 the time & still be thorough.
Ok, so I was practicing really rotating my hips and abdomen to pick up some extra power. The problem I have is that when I try to put in this extra power in my swing, I end up leaning on the outside of my left foot (I'm righty). Idk if I am doing something wrong or I am swinging too hard. Should I widen my stance, point my toes a little bit outwards, or what? Anyone with good gold knowledge please respond. I'm just getting into the sport.
@SideSpin11 Good question. The hands are said to be 'deep' when they work more around the body as opposed to up in front of it. We like the hands to work deep because it promotes a powerful, inside path on the downswing and it unites the arms and body.
A good checkpoint is at halfway back (down the line view) your hands should be covering of your right bicep.
@SideSpin11 if you look at his hands half way back to the ball in the downswing, they will appear to be still back behind his hips, that's what the mean by deep, more behind the body rather than out in front
my god never heard so much crap zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
@Curtis3247 Have you got any videos of your swing?? I imagine if you're catching it heavy you are coming in to the ball underplane. Do you generally draw the ball? I suggest you try rotating your body more left in the downswing, try to hit some fades. That will get the club more in front of you and the bottom of the arc more forward. Upload some vids so we can take a look!
A good swing thought is come down in a L shape. Trying the scoop the ball violently. At the same time a vertical jerk upwards with the head to shallow out the shot. Try it!
Hey Dan great analysis. I was tending to over rotate my hips in the backswing, but now I am working on keeping my hips a lot quieter. Your explanation has really hepled me to understand the the way the hips should work and to create torque it is the upper half resisting against the lower half in the backswing. Cheers for that.
Some things this guy says is absolute $#!t some it isn't true if his head drops down that's bad not good If he keeps his head still he doesn't have to alter his swing midway through the shot which then wastes you energy. Have to admit I didn't watch the whole video but I watched enough.
Like Fowler, the question will be how well this action holds up as his body ages. This is a young man's swing, eventually he won't be able to turn through fast enough and synch it up. For now though. and for the next 5-10 years, let'er rip Rory.
@loshis123 Hi Nick, we're based in London but we specialise in online lessons. So, all you have to do is video your swing and send it to us via email and we'll analyse it and give you some key things to work on in a video.
Just visit the Academy page on our website, click the Buy Now button for a single lesson and complete the payment process. Easy as that.
Good analysis-surprised you didnt mention how deep the hands are, how he almost gets stuck on the downswing, how he has to massively rotate his hips to square the club, how he fires his right hand hard at the ball just so the arms to get back in sync with the body (and hence sometimes why he pull hooks), and how far open his shoulders are at impact.
@Tourswing - Doesn't sound like you think too much of McIlroy's action then Tourswing! You must be a hard man to please because despite its flaws its still a tremendous model for 90% of amateurs to follow, especially slicers.
Had a quick look a your website, I'm interested in your claims that you hate quick fixes and gimmicks but that you guarantee a tour quality swing in 6 lessons - that seems a little contradictory?!
@purplegolf Hi Dan-I think Rory has an amazing swing/action/setup but I think it's too reliant on the timing of the right hand mostly due to the deep hands. I agree not a bad model for amateurs to follow to avoid a slice but alot of pushes and hooks with this action if the timing isn't good-there are simpler actions. Virtually all my clients have learnt tour quality swings in 6 lessons (+plenty of practice) and I'm confident I can reproduce results in anyone. Where are u guys based?
This is one thorough analysis, although once thing that I had a problem with is how long winded it was. Some of this is due to the redundancy on the things that were covered. I am not trying to shoot you down but at times where you were losing me because I just wanted you to get on with it. I would be more apt to watch other videos, but am weary because I don't want to sit through that again. Just some criticisms.
@BMWS14B23 Thanks for the constructive criticism, it was useful. We've taken on board your comments and hopefully you'll enjoy our more recent videos. Cheers.
Interesting analysis, probably the most in depth and useful one I've seen of McIlroy's swing. Although I take away below plane, I get a great position at the top, then not really sure where it goes wrong from there. Can totally understand the idea of working the hips through first, generating that extra torque, do you suggest a drill for working on this? If anything, I'd say I go back under plane then come back above plane on a relatively steep path which is mirrored in my follow through.
@michaeln84 Hi Michael, if you come down too steep into the ball then you probably want to feel like you rotate your hips left as you start down but keep you shoulders closed. Try feeling like your right shoulder moves down towards your right trouser pocket as you start down rather than forward towards the ball.
Why not come to us for a video analysis of your swing? If you don't like it we'l give you your money back!
Hi Scott. I'm interested to know more about lower body action as I feel v. 'stuck' at transtion plus a steep, slightly OTT downswing. Upper body is v.active and lower feels passive + following upper body movement.
Also, I think you'll find that the camera angle this video was taken at was mid-body or shoulder height. In order to check swing plane, the camera height needs to be at address / impact hand position. As the camera is too high, clubhead / shaft looks more under plane than reality.
@SwingTheoryGolf@SwingTheoryGolf Thanks for your comments and I agree that the camera position is a little high but unfortunately there were advertising boards preventing me from getting the correct height.
From what you're saying it certainly sounds like your upper half is too dominant in the downswing. However, we'd really need to see a video of your swing in order to provide some meaningful analysis so why not join us for a lesson at the purplegolf academy?
He is physically quite small and slight, but this action creates so much torque and power that he is up there with Quiros/Johnson etc in the driving stats.
im not a golf pro at all far from it and u do seem to make alot of sense but when u talk about rory's head movement if u take a look at another one of his drives his head seems to be in the same position throughout the swing?
@MATALLIGAZ Thanks for the comment. Maybe you could respond with a video or a link so I can see which swing you're referring to. I would possibly suggest that it happens so fast at normal speed that it's not that noticeable. Cheers
@purplegolf wont let me put the link up if u type in rory drive at the portuguese masters take a look p.s does every pro do that squat on the downswing?
330 yards right on target, who cares about the swing?

he's not "under the plane" early in the backswing. It is strictly camera angle.

Thanks for the analysis!
When I compress I generate a lot of club speed, but it also causes my hands to go lower to the point where the club sometimes contacts the ground.
Any tips?
