Yes, captivity is so bad for elephants and other animals. Please search “elephant stereotypy” and “the captivity industry” to learn more. The elephants will thank you.
FYI to all who are talking about the elephants that died at the Toronto zoo 1 of them was old and another was a new born! And new born animals die all the time!! How do I know this? When I was growing up my parents worked at zoo! No it was not Toronto zoo, I'm defending them because I'm sick and tired of you people complaining about that crap when you don't know **** about it!!! Stop ******* believing everything you read or hear!!!!
@Melodyandblaze The FACTS are, that after this video was filmed, Tequila was found dead lying on an electric fence (2008-09-02), Tessa died next, of injuries from another elephant (2009-06-13), and Tara died of severe arthritis (2009-11-30) at the age of 38 - when she could have expected 60+ years in the wild. I am very tired myself at people who have to scream & swear to try to prove their incorrect points.
3 elephants died within 2 years at the zoo Thank heavens the zoo has decided to move the last 3 out of Toronto's frigid weather. Now we just need to convince them that they should go to a sanctuary instead of another zoo with no room to move
@iceblazes the elephants are going to a sanctuary and thank you to Bob Barker for paying for their move. I am appalled as a Canadian that zoos think they are doing a service to humans by keeping them in encjlosures too small and in temperatures that are not their normal environment..
@3dolphindoll Thank you for posting that. Of course, anyone who appreciates dolphins must also know how sentient and emotional elephants are - in fact, both dolphin and elephant brains are more complex and convoluted than that of humans. They just didn't evolve to have defenses against gun powder. Now, if we can just get the Toronto zoo keepers to co-operate, we can go on to try to help Lucy in Edmonton, the loneliest & coldest elephant in Canada!
Elephant are to intelligent and large to be in captivity. They don't live as long as they do in the wild. And in addition Toronto zoo looks like it has poor standard in terms of animal welfare.
Poor magnificent creature. First we overpopulate like insects and take their habitat then put them into small enclosures where they cannot function normally, form natural relationships, get away when needed, be solitary etc... Its great that people help animals survive and you need to lock them up but not in zoos and small places like that. Natural reserves, big enclosures in Africa where you can go on a safari. Other than that, its just sad to watch.
These elephants are extremely uncomfortable, with deep infections in the bottoms of their feet, very cold, and truly unhappy living in a playground, when they should be in a savanna that is hundreds of kilometres.
The world is talking about this horrible captivity. Why don't you open your eyes just a little. Who gives a damn if they PEEEE - grow up.
HOW the hell do you know what they are feeling? People like you are sickening. Clearly, African elephants should NOT be in environments that they are not native to. This Zoo and the people make me ill. We should put HUMANS in Zoos of Ant Artica....NAKED
@Cino1 What are you talking about - I have clearly stated that these elephants are victims int he confines of the zoo and it's incompetence. You must be confusing my remarks with someone else. I did indeed MOCK the ridiculous audio remarks about the elephants urinating. That's how bloody simple people are. Objectification of a remarkable animal is unacceptable anytime.
Chill out Cino1...and get your facts straight when trying to humiliate someone.
@Cino1 You need to take an IQ test for comprehension. This silly rant that you are directing at me is probably intended for your invisible enemy. Anyone who has read my comments gets that I completely oppose the captive prison that these elephants are in. Grow up.
@morningglorify . . you are so right. And elephants urinate at times of extreme social excitement . .and at the zoo they get to soak their feet in urine/mud slush, before going back in to stand on cold concrete, also standing in their own excrement for 14 hours at a time - because there's nobody there when the zoo is closed.
I the early spring when we let out the hourses, They would go nuts, running, rearing up, farting, peeing, etc. I guess elephants are not too different.
All animals go through social disagreements and occassional family squabbles. All, including people obviously. Turning butts toward the offender can be a subordinate move and facing off like two of them did against the instigator was a show of solidarity. Very interesting. Who's to say exactly what was going on without knowing the individuals. ages, hormone cycles, relationships-related or bonded. Again, ver cool.
Pretty cool elephant behavior to try to figure out. Could be a subordinate female trying to improve her position in the hierarchy of the herd or just in a rambunctious or cranky mood. I've watched a few times to try to figure out who the matriach is, if there is one in this herd and see who is trying to intervene on the behalf of the one being picked on.
it really is massive, and usually very friendly and happy elephants. its just this day they didn't seem to be getting a long very well, and it happened to be the day i was recording...strange
@teeeeeeej Well there is another thing that could make them kinda pissed, they are elephants and elephants dont live in cold climates, the indian elephant lives in a warm climate, the african elephant lives even warmer.
5 giant animals in this tiny, cold, snowy enclosure??!! No darn wonder they are cranky! This is cruel! AND what the heck were the people laughing at? makes me want to cry for them!!!! Shame on Toronto!!
@purpletiger64 They were laughing at the elephant piss. Cry for those animals in captivity who are denied food and basic necessities of life. Cry for the 11 Tigers that starved to death at the Shenyang Zoo. The elephants at the Toronto Zoo are healthy and happy, for an animal in captivity. Aggression in wild animals is normal. Shame on you for trying to condemn an entire city. Their enclosure is 7 acres for 5 elephants, and this is larger then what most zoos, including the San Diego Zoo, provide
@purpletiger64 why are you saying shame on toronto u shouldn't be cause alot of people live here and that is disrespectful! yes i know it is cruel but dont go and blaming toronto blame the zoo!
i went to the elephant are and one of the elephants came close to me and i yelled at him i said HEY YOU!! LOL i got a good shoot and he stuck his butt out for some Chinese girls taking pics haha
The enclosure is bigger than than what you see on here, Theres another section that is lower down, attached to this, that has a raised section for vistors to look over the enclosure from, but I do wish they would increase the size a little or make it not so..rocky looking.
