  • Being played now at the cricket :)

  • Hey i'm a german guy who grew up in the canadian wilderness. When I was very young my parents used to play this on tape cassette for me before bed. I remember loving it by the fire with wolves howling around us. Soon I will be camping in Australia, I hope to hear dingos howl and remember this song from my childhood, much love to you Australia!

  • Love this song my grandpa would sing this to me and my cousin when we were little

  • Best camping song ever.

  • This song makes me so proud to be australian every time I hear it -3

  • Great country ... Great singer ...ED-IRAQ

  • Australia and NZ are the countries God designed before he got bored. He left all the best wildlife, scenery and peoples there, discovered lager, put out some flyers for a BBQ... and has never been seen since.

  • @MrBuch169169 yeah, and then, just to ruin it, he put THE BIGGEST FUCKING SPIDERS ON EARTH THERE.

  • @der5fv tranlslate please enguilsh sory for bad english not my first languish

  • @joey844

This song is a song I sang to go to Australia.

This song, listen whenever I remember to Australia.

    Australia's finest!

  • if it wasn't about a guy stealing a goat and then killing himself to not get caught, I'd want this the national anthem

  • but not bad

  • i prefer party rock anthem

  • MAKE THIS OUT ANTHEM!!!!!

  • @alyshajoanne94 would totally agree if it wasnt about a guy necking himself

  • I'm trying to wrap me head around wot this song is about. Someone help me?

  • @adamcharney "Waltzing Matilda" means to travel with nothing with you but a "matilda" bag or bundle with your belongings in it. In the song, a swagman (traveling homeless man looking for work) camps near a billabong (watering hole) and boils water in a billy. (kettle for boiling water) He catches a jumbuck (sheep) to eat and sticks the meat in his tucker bag (food bag). The man who owned the sheep brings police to arrest the swagman (who drowns himself and his ghost haunts the site)

  • @adamcharney your an idiot

    does that help?

  • @LUK3SYboy coming from an insignificant nobody such as yourself, it does nothing.

  • @adamcharney your the one who doesnt getbthe song mate

  • I@LUK3SYboy I was asking about a more metaphorical meaning, not a literal one. When I want a shallow, on the surface answer, I'll consult a simpleton like you. Cheers for your insight.

  • I´m not an Australian, but I do like this song.......this melody .....It still goes around in my head....for days now!

Thank you for posting! Greetz :)

  • You just try watching this video without a stupid grin on your face. Just try it.

    Definitely a feel good song.

  • This should be on the citizenship exam. This song is an integral part of Australian history, and thus every citizen should know the lyrics.

  • @TeChaff Half of them can't even speak English well. Let alone know the lyrics of a song that has nothing to do with Australian Government. I'm not saying that I don't wish everyone knew it. But it's not realistic. I'd also like Still call Australia Home as part of it.

  • Nice rendition. Slim is a legend.

  • I wonder how many thousands of different performances Slim had done of this song? I would have loved to have had him lead one of my Boy Scout campfires when I was a kid!

  • best poem made by andrew banjo paterson.

thumbs up if you like this song and think it's the best poem. :)

  • Im an American and I love this song! I thought that it was the Australian National Anthem.

  • 10 million travellers/year can't be wrong. Australia has to be one of the best if not the best place in the world. During my one year of travel in "OZ" I fell in love with the place and I would never change that year for anything.

I doubt that you would find friendlier and at the same time tougher people anywhere else. Go Wallabeies!!!

This song should really be your national anthem. It has the essence of Australia. At least according to my experiences.

  • @Aakkima it would be a good national anthem if it wasnt about a criminal killing himself.

  • @Aakkima the national anthem here in australia sucks. there r plenty of great country songs that sum up the country way better

  • @Aakki agree since i live here i cant take any pride in our national anthem, i feel no heart in my anthem but this song shakes everything your heart to the very core its just bloody amazing.

  • @Aakkima Were called Kangeroos mate!! Never call a An Aussie a name like that or ull be be liked to get punched! For the rest we agree.

  • @Aakkima People have been saying that for years! Either this or "I Am Australian". I'm very proud to be an Aussie, born and bred. My family have been Sharefarmers ever since we came here, working our hands to the bone.

And tomorrow, Jan 26th, is Australia Day, a day where all Aussies from around the world celebrate our history, our heritage and our future.

May Australia live on for all time!

  • @FatmanXVII Happy Australia Day! My kindergarten teacher taught me this song as she was an Aussie herself n I have been singing it since!

  • @Aakkima Have you been to New Zealand?

  • この歌最高♪

    オーストラリア最高☆

  • Omg! The Swagman! So #rare and #based!

  • If you dont get the hairs on your body stand on end listening to this song then your not a true Aussie!! Best f**kin country in the world.

  • i am 17 growing up in a rough place and this song gives me hope slim dusty's songs give me hope every day. he is a beautiful man and his songs are so true and amazing. :)

  • Slim Dusty, the King of Australian Country Music. I love his songs and have lots of them . Many here in America do not know about Australian country artists, most are even better than what we have here ! RIP Dusty, we miss ya ! Thanks..

    Wayne..

  • real men smoke pipes

  • So... a hobo grabs a sheep by a lake and stuffs it in his backpack... nice australia nice.

  • @missesemILY22 That's what we're all about, buddy.

  • The late, great Slim Dusty!

May his soul rest in peace!

  • I remember traveling to Australia and learning this song i will never forget those awesome days

  • To all the people who told me that I am wrong that this should be the national anthem:

Your right! It only applies to the poms, and has little relevance to other races. After all, Australia is too multicultural for these songs.

  • Wow, I was clueless, I thought this was your national Anthem!

  • 64 people didn't waltz with matilda

  • im from australia!!!

    i love this song

  • Slim is a pretty fine kind so and so of the bardic tradition for sure, and all of the words are the correct ones ! ! ! I'm passing it on ! ! !

  • I'm from Finland. And I love this song. Maybe don't love but still like it! (I'm a Australia fan)

  • Slim is the best!

  • My mum used to sing me this when I was a little boy. This never gets old.

  • "Theres heros and theres legends....heros get remembered but legends never die"...Slims legend WILL never die! R.I.P.

  • 64 people had no waltz

  • Either this or "men at work, land down under" should be the austrailian national anthem!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 64 people dont want to go a waltzing matilda

  • "Munchkin Cthulhu, Munchkin Cthulhu, you'll come a Munchkin Cthulhu with me!" - the Song Of Madness card from Munchkin Cthulhu. Now I can sing it propertly.

  • I like the song although I had no idea what any word meant! Thank God for Wikipedia

  • you'll never hear anyone sing Waltzing Matilda with the same zest and love that old Slim sang it with

  • 10/10

  • This is the only song I've heard my dad sing at the top of his lungs

  • this is the best poem i have ever heard

  • I have loved this song since I was a boy, but I never understood what it was about. Now that I know what the song is about, I love it even more. Plus this is the best version I have ever heard.

  • Comment removed

  • As an Irish man I love you .

  • fucking love this song, dingo til i die!

  • Very good :) got all his albums RIP Slim Dusty

  • We Australians should really make this our National Anthem. Our Current one, Advance Australia Fair, is quite horrible, I consider Advance Australia Fair and Embarrassment. This really reflects our history, we were after all- a prisoner island.

You'd think Australia would have a high crime rate..... We have some of the lowest Crime Rates in the World!

  • @Doomemperor1 Australia, and the Australians, are a remarkable people...and so lovely!

  • @Doomemperor1

This may have a lot to do with out history and i personally like it more but it really neglects the aboriginals and others. Advance Australia Fair doesn't matter where you are from or who you are it just see's us all as one

  • @Doomemperor1 i agree with what u say , i would like australia to be a repubic but the home land is filled with pomms , until we have our own say in our home land we are stuck with it....................................

  • @Doomemperor1 I quite like our National Anthem the way it is.

  • @Doomemperor1 this song or " I still call australia home". Advance australia fair has no emotion in it at all. this song makes the hairs on your neck stand up!

  • @Doomemperor1 Oz accent is the best.;)

  • @Doomemperor1 They actually had referrendum for the anthem back in the day. This song got about 20% of the vote to the current anthem's 40%. I think its time for anthem reelection.

  • @Doomemperor1

Either this song or we are australian would be fine. Advance australia fair is indeed inferior to both by a huge margin.

  • @Doomemperor1 You've got to remember that back than the British Empire took away rights, they believed that they were the royal family because God wanted them there. So all the people arrested and sent to Australia were people who stole, etc. But also people who protested the crown. Same reason the people of America left and created one of their laws as the "separation of church and state" so that no one would ever have religious control of the society in their country. The Aussies weren't bad

  • @ActuallyLiam Bullshit, the British weren't bad just in the 1700 and 1800 there was alot of poverty in Britain the people sent to Australia varied from Murders and Rapists to Petty Crimes.

They where simply sent because the British prisons couldn't cope with the amount of prisoners.

As for America well the pilgrims were religious quackheads that kept preaching against the church.

I love Australia i've been twice but don't make out Britain is bad.

  • @DaleWF10 I didn't say Britain was bad. I said back in the day. It's true though, the monarchy thought they were put there by God. They enforced their power over the people. It's the same today if you go against government, back then it wasn't for "terrorist" activities. There is always a lot of poverty, when the the government doesn't serve the people, take China or Egypt currently. This is why they went against the monarchy. I don't hate Britain at all.

  • @ActuallyLiam Your kind of wrong about the monarchy though in the 1700's Britain was at the forefront of civilized societies there was no better place to live it was the most powerful country in the world and in a scientific and industrial revolution

  • @DaleWF10 The prisoners you're referring to weren't "simply sent" because of overcrowded British prisons. They were sent as a means of cheap labor to build another colony for the crown.

As for your characterization of Pilgrims as "quackheads" I suppose anyone who doesn't believe what you believe would fall under that title. If so, then count me as a quackhead.

  • @sitonmyshamrock1 Read about the why the pilgrims left England and you'll see and it was long before i was alive so why would i call them quackheads i couldnt care less

and yes cheap labour but the main reason was overcrowding

  • @DaleWF10 Why would you call them quackheads? Ask yourself...."As for America well the pilgrims were religious quackheads that kept preaching against the church."

Those are your words, not mine.

  • @sitonmyshamrock1 Just research about them they preached about weird religions and tryed to turn people against the church

  • @DaleWF10 I don't need to do any research kid. I was just clarifying that you were the one throwing "quackheads" around, not me. As for whatever they preached, that was their choice. It was a choice they didn't have in England so I'm glad they came over to this side.

  • Yes I'm uploading a video today on the issue I have about 8 songs that i've picked out my videos should be up in about 20 minutes world wide but this issue is mostly a decision for australian's as I think our current one sucks check it out on my channel

  • @Doomemperor1 because it was the first time criminals learned their lesson

  • I'm German and we learned the song in English (subject), and i liked it. Today one of our class has the choose: to write 2 pages or to sing waltzing mathilda accapella, he decided to sing :D very good song. Thumps up for Australia

  • @MareMoertlbauer Don't freaking kill English. Study some more. -giggles-

  • Very Australian so fun and cool

  • This song makes me feel prouder and more patriotic than Advance Australia Fair ever could.

  • waltzing matilda vs. land down under

  • I shagged matilda, i shagged matilda, i shagged matilda and so did my mates, and she moaned and she groaned and she took it up the billabong, i shagged matilda and so did my mates

  • @DaleWF10 Jokes on you, you're a pom. LOL

  • @MsSloppyseconds Shut it convict , jokes on you we sent your great great grandad half way around the world and now you have to put up with El Nino, Floods and Drought

  • @DaleWF10 Have a winge, pom. LOL

  • @MsSloppyseconds Get back in your Prison cell convict

  • @DaleWF10 I'll pass.

  • This is a great song, and technically it is Australia's unofficial national anthem

  • @Jerrytcale that doesnt really make sense haha

  • great soothing song

  • Klasse Sänger nicht nur für Aussies ;-)

  • this is a story

  • We sing this in scouts all the time. we always argue the meaning around the campfire

  • thebranchinator, we've been saying it should be Oz's anthem since last century. No disrespect intended but It's far superior to the official anthem and so perfect for the country. If only politicians had a heart for music and joy in their soul eh?

  • @nv7103 Use the reply button so it'll appear in that person's inbox.

  • Good song. I love Australia! I hope to go someday!

  • This is Lebstralia. No such thing as Australia.

  • @Lebstralia I'll give you till 12 tomorrow to change it to lebstralia if it isn't changed I'll know your a troll.

    Bye.

  • @MsSloppyseconds read your comment again.. doesnt even make sense

  • Fist pump to chorus!!!!!!!! onya slim!

  • A lot of people dont realize how sad this song is. A true classic and this man does it the best kind of justice, he really brings the emotions of the people involved out.

  • @shaggyfeller I've been there. You won't be sorry for going Down Under.

  • reminds me of my first acid trip

  • @Albertfagerberg...A tucker bag is a bag that you would put food in... A lunch box in other words.

The exact definition is (according to, The free dictionary by farlex) tuck·er-bag (tkr-bg)

    n. Australian

A bag for carrying food, used by a traveler in the bush or by a swagman.

  • @foxfire269 A billy is a kettle that holds just enough water for one or two cups of coffee or tea. A bill-a-bong is a small pool of water like a brook or a stream. A coolibah tree is a kind of tree that is indigenous to Australia.

A matilda is a knapsack for carrying night clothes (usually) and other things needed while camping. 'Waltzing' refers to the matilda swinging back and forth as the swagman walks along (it refers to his freedom to wander).

A swagman is like a hobo or a nomad.

  • @fatkinson2011 Now I understand the song. :) Thanks...

  • @RachBubbs96 Glad I cleared it up. Regards,

  • Love the song, Love the Kanga people, especialy my good friend Lynne. But where the heck can I find myself a "Tucker Bag"? And to think for years I thought Matilda was a kangaroo
