Stewart is completely unique. He may have even invented a new style... if nothing less, you can always tell when Copeland is behind a kit. I've seen Sting use a half a dozen very solid drummers during his solo career and none of them could emulate Stewart's rhythms.
Yes I agree Stewart is one of those drummers that was meant to drum. Like a singer that was born to sing. Stewart's talent is DRUMS. And I like the grooves and the fills and this video is cool. He's no doubt a genius in his own right. Wayne
oh hell,he is a good drummer ,thats about it. he is not some f ing drum god for christ sakes. mitch mitchell, ginger baker, mickey hart, kieth moon at his drunkest are all better drummers. the list of better drummers is endless.
@digger7106 Sorry, Keith Moon beat his drums senselessly (especially when drunk, which was all the time) and I hated that all he did was fills, and couldn't just make a beat for the band.
This performance isn't very impressive, and I can't help but feel the scores of users here, raving about how Stewart is one of the best drummers ever, are actually Police fans with no understanding of the instrument. He's a solid drummer, but I haven't heard anything, neither pocket, nor chops, or even a unique sense of groove, that would qualify him to play at MD festival, besides his fame.
@spurious Wow, that's a very horrible assumption. No understanding of the instrument? For all you know every comment here could be made by drummers far more experienced than you! And get off your high horse - putting down Stewart Copeland? Lol.
@StrawberryJungle First off, the notion that every comment here is posted by a drummer superior to myself, is significantly less likely than everyone here being an ignorant Police fan. Secondly, I beg you to show me one video of Stewart Copeland in which he plays something impressive or unique.
@spurious Instead of sitting here destroying Copeland on a youtube feed, how about you take your time to practice drums and make an attempt to play like he does. The ironic part is, no matter how long you practice, you won't ever do it. Shut the hell up.
Stewart Copeland epitomizes what it is to be not only a fantastic drummer but an amazing musician. I think far too many people try to over-analyse music and turn it into either a sport or maybe analyse it scientifically when they forget its quite simply about feeling.
Music is music...play it, enjoy it, and forget what anyone else thinks of you.
Whats most brilliant about stu's technique is that he hits hard, but he doesn't waste an ounce of energy, and he's never hitting hard without purpose. all the energy you see goes right into a clean solid, confident note each time.
What a great drummer and not over the top a lot's of these modern drummers would just be trying to fit as many fast roll's and fill in as possible. I am a drummer not a very good drummer but I think that some drummer just try to do too much and see how fast they can play I am all about the smooth rhythm. Great drummer great post thanx!!!
I met Mr. Copeland when I was nine years old. I was taking guitar lessons at the time, but my instructor took me to a drum clinic where Stewart was being featured. Afterward, I put my guitar in its case and never touched it again. I've been playing drums since, practice almost every day but, damn it, still haven't caught up. Stewart's great.
Stewart Copeland is without a doubt one of the best drummers ever - perhaps even my own personal favorite. Being a guitarist, he represents everything I wish I could have in a drummer since what mainly attracts me to his playing is how well he stays in his own -unique- pocket, only coming out when the music needs that extra flair or push. I wish more drummers would take note of just how important that is.
@DottyLomax we try but when u got crap guitarist & singers going out of time & blaming the drummers its not easy, but Copeland has gr8 musos to work with, & anyhow all musos should be drummers at the basic level, but unfortunately most musos attitude to rhythm sux, they prefer to play scales at ahundred miles an hour & show off.
I would say Jazz with a definite African flavour. Copeland is very, very adept at taking these seemingly disparate styles and making something new out of them. Check out his Rhythamist album, it's scary good.
The melody at the end was created by Stewart for Spyro The Dragon video game. The whole composition I think is not a real song, just a small jam, you know, to show what Stewart can do.
yeah it's really just a kick ass rendition of Blowhard. Stewart basically has complete artistic control over Gizmo. I mean who's going to challenge him? lol
he recycles a lot of his stuff. Like he used a more orchestral version of the Lofty Castle theme when he scored the movie The Pallbearer. You can see for yourself by listening to the sample of his anthology on itunes.
he actually composed the soundtrack for spyro 1. not sure if he did the other games though. love spyro music, love the police and love copelands playing!!!

Stewart also expressed an interest in more diverse music, which came through in his playing (eg. reggae), so playing this music after years of being the Police is a perfectly natural progression, not a case of 'another rock guy going all world music on us', wherever that came from.
Wow, bentnosewp ! Congratulations. You are racist, homophobic, zenophobic, stupidly arrogant and utterly immature. Well done you fucking twat ! Stewart Copeland is brilliant. End of story.

I noted the following when I commented on Steve Smith's drum solo with Journey:
1) With the traditional grip, the left stick actually becomes more powerful because it becomes like a whip.
2) In addition, there is much less strain on the left wrist and forearm.
3) It just looks plain cool :)

Copeland's work with the snare has always been remarkable (in addition to everything else).
