On this date in 1971 {Feb. 20th} "What's Going On" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 15 weeks in the Top 100.
Ranked 21st on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1971 chart...
Reached #1 on Billboard's R&B chart
Cyndi Lauper covered it, her version reached #12
Was the 1st of 3 straight records by Mr. Gaye to make the Top 10; this one, "Mercy Mercy Mercy" {#4}, & "Inner City Blues" {#9}...
Im no singer but I agree..perhaps there is something deeper going on that the young don't have and can't generate that true deep soul..Without a real sense of history there is no appreciation for the true struggles and triumphs of the generation. I our young people are slaves in a greater sense than we ever were..They are self oppressed...not that oppression does not exist but they are so deeply intrenched in their own servitude that they cant see..that my friends is scary.
when u think of those "right ons" and how they fill out the song with music on,
this truly tells you that as well as the very best technical musician, Marvin was on another planet in terms of understanding production. Truly Amazing Genius.
What's amazing is when asked about the lyrics that he was writting, he told his co partners that it was God that was writing the lyrics and not him. If you've listen to what was being said on this album back then and comparing to whats going on in this world in this day and time, To be honest, It had to have been God allowing him to see in to yesterdays, today as well as tomorrows future. Now to top all of this, Barry Gordy wanted to trash the album because he thought it wouldn't sell. WOW!
Nobody ,male or female , will EVER get near this man 's voice , pure silk , pure class , sends. shivers all over ,dim the lights , glass o wine , close your eyes and lose yourself . Whats going on has to b the best album of all time !! Voice of an angel .
Taking the torch passed on by Sam Cooke, MG was at the peak of the genre, melding r&b, gospel, soul, pop, and jazz. His multi-tracking of voices paralles what Jimi Hendrix was laying down with multiple guitar tracks, creating complex orchestrations that contain waves of sound and healing word sound power. Because of artists like these, we suffer less, and when we do suffer, we know we are not alone. That explains, in part, why we love them so.
"It sometimes is too much to think about; how music is so universal and so powerful. God gave this purpose, this gift of music to a man and then he left us in one of the saddest of ways. And to this day, there has never been another Marvin Gaye." -Christina D.
I love Marvin, but I have to say this. He had a huge forhead. Pause at 2:33. It could be because of the receding harline. Either way, that's probably why he started wearing the hats.
@KrfNYC2 We love you also KrfNYC2 whether you have a huge forehead or not. What truly matters is what's on the inside of a person that is displayed outwardly for all to see from their heart, mind and soul. What's not important is what a person looks like on the outside. I speak for all here and there. We thank you for your thoughts, but sometimes our thoughts should be kept to ourselves. If they are not positive or beneficial in anyway to others, these are those times.
@KrfNYC2 OK. Please be careful in making comments like that here jokingly or not. Although Marvin is no longer here with us physically, he is greatly missed by many. His music is what lives on with us. This is what's important. Eventhough Marvin's parents and brother are no longer with us, his wife and daughter Nona are still present this day. I am sure they would not be pleased in reading a comment like that about the one they love, even jokingly. A harmless sense of humor is OK.
@Mixedbreed3 That's a possibility, as is anything. Again, I feel what you're saying, I just don't know if my comment is worth such analysis. I don't think that is was severe enough (or severe at all) to warrant such a reaction. There's nothing wrong with what you're saying and I appreciate your outlook, but a comment like "I love Marvin but he had a pretty big fore-head" is an observation, there is no hate, malice or implication that apperance is more important that what's on the inside. Peace.
@Mixedbreed3 Also, I don't know Marvin's family so I can't say how they would re-act to my comment. My guess is that they wouldn't be displeased. For one, from my experience, most people are not that sensetive. And two,the begining of my comment read:"I love Marvin".I think that should outweigh the forehead comment. If people came up to me saying that they loved my diseased kin but they had a big forehead.I wouldn't dwell on the forehead,I'd be happy about the love. This is all just specualtion.
@Mixedbreed3 Just to make sure we understand eachother (or at least you understand me), I'm on the same page with you. What I said wasn't necessary. I don't think it was particularly hurtful, but it definitely could have been done without.
damn man...if we can jusssst get these current generation to sing a MELODY!jeez just sing the damn song.if theyd stop lettng the tail wag the dog they mite even lern how a song is SUNG!marvin rules.its just that simple.
@timmy841212 Photo at 3:30 mark in the song really captures him. Serious, contemplating his cultural productions, yearning, aware of his mission, and brimming with musical vision waiting to be crafted and layed down on wax. There's a lot of Freudian psychoanalytic themes in MG's life and music. He was a person of depth, beauty, contradiction, and substance. He made our lives richer and less painful. I am grateful to listen to the acapella rendition. MG had an extremely high emotional IQ.
There have been two main sources for the vocal clips, says a Motown representative: a recent series of Motown DVDs, and a collection of Motown karaoke discs. Both feature tracks with vocals cleanly separated from the instrumental beds; savvy users have then isolated those vocals and posted them online.

Marvin Gaye's is the artist that I most identify with.
I tried emulate his music earlier in my life.
This brother was so sensual...
His Music did provide sexual healing for many of us during lovemaking
The first time I made love, "I want You" was playing on my cassette deck.
His music helped me, and HEALED during some very trying times......
These songs are dedicated to Nicci. Girl you were my first love
I think of you often....Thank You for allowing me in your life
